In responce to Arkhan and Malakai's posts: It's not fair to say graphics are the problem, it's that not many people want to change how things work with games.
It's almost like a moment from a Family Guy episode where there's a group of people thinking up a new show and one guy pipes up complaining about how it's the same crap over and over and that they need to do something new. They kill him for it....
It's probably true in reality, aside from the killing part, that they'll just avoid making something new. RPGs for example almost always have a moody person, a bimbo, a braindead muscle man, a perky kid, a halfway decent character that could have been better had he/she not been tossed into the trash game, an antisocial freak, and a quiet and innocent person all head off to stop some nut job from destroying/taking over the world.
There are a few lucky RPGs to break away from this, but how well known are they? Probably not well known at all, because the repeated crap gets plenty of advertising.
Then again movies, music, and TV shows have all fallen into that sort of problem. You've seen one type of movie and you've seen all movies of that type. Same with TV shows and music.
---------
In responce to the main post, so what if Phantasy Star Online isn't like the others? It's probably a decent game, aside from times you'll have to deal with morons, but I honestly couldn't say. I won't touch the game because it's online and I just dont like online games, if it were offline I'd have no problem with it I dont think.
Also it seems you dont want change. Would you honestly want them to revive the old series? It was good, but it came to an end and should be left that way. And you should be glad that they're trying something new but keeping some things from the original series.
But please explain to me how keeping a name and having a different setting "shakes up everything we have all worked so hard to uncover in the stories of Algo". I dont see how it'll affect something it's not tied to.
