I'll leave it up to you to figure out why your "waffle" arguement doesn't hold water in this situation.

It's true. We have a lot of lights. Our taxes are used well.

Back then I didn't understand that Siren meant prostitution district. I thought it was about the large amount of street lights that Belgium has.
There is some truth to the red light district, though, I admit that.

I'm sure LaconianShot can explain it better than me. Grammar and spelling is important on a message board. Typing horribly makes you look like a kid, and doesn't make you credible.

Well, I've said it once, and I shall say it again. On a message board, it's usually important to be able convey your message. It has to coherent. Now, most people can manage this much, albeit on varying scales. However, it comes down to believability. In a complex debate, who are you going to lend more credibility to... the guy who types with proper grammar and enhanced vocabulary or the guy who tipes liek tihs? Aside from that, I would like to think that when you post you take pride in your writing and thoughts enough to make them look good.

You never cease to amaze me in your bad interpretation, Arkhan.
You can choose to eat waffles or not. So Belgium makes waffles. Big deal. It's still the person's choice to become fat by it or not. Moderation is key.
It's a bad analogy for trying to prove that saying people are fat in Seattle are wrong.
But in any case, I must admit that I'm terribly wrong this time. It's not Seattle, but Houston that is full of fat people.
My apologies.

Why not Phantasy Star?

What's happened to our games?
I remember I was in 6th grade when the NES and Master System craze really hit. I remeber how cool Super Mario Brothers looked, and how Legend of Zelda sparked my sense of adventure. The Sega system never interested me, but there was always one game I saw on the shelves that made me salivate with curiosity; Phantsy Star! Looking at the back of the box I though "Holy crap! This looks amazing! 3 planet non-linear RPG! Beautiful graphics!" As an avid RPG and D&D player this was killing me! I was playing NES for a full year before I ever touched a Master Sytem controller. The best RPG I had played up to that point was Ultima-Exedous (yuk!)
I finally was able to play the game when my great friend had me over one night and showed me that he had this Phantasy Star game. I played for about 10 seconds before I was hooked and played the damn game for the next 2 and half years.
At the same time; Final Fantasy came out for the NES. I played it a lot too, but every single time I hated doing it. Why did I play it? I don't know, maybe I really wanted to like it. I wanted to know that there COULD be more games like Phantasy Star out there. Final Fantasy sucked.
Then Phantasy Star began over the next several years; to pop out sequels that were excellent if not perfect follow ups. But the best thing about all those sequels is finding out how all your heros relate to each other and the evolution of the Algo solar sytem. Some things were lame, some things were funny, others heartbreaking, but overall it was a beautiful seamless story that they created. So beautiful that we have all felt it's absence since the day we finished Phantasy Star 4 the first time.
When PSO came out, many of us felt betrayed. Playing PSO for me was like watching an old friend become an abusive alcholic, or seeing someone else kiss your girlfriend. Some of us forced ourselves to like it, but the truth is; our beautiful Phantasy Star has been sold like some cheap whore, and they have scarred her.
Yet still Final Fantasy; a game that was inferior from the very beginning has spawned countless sequels, is on TV commercials, and has degenerated adventure and sci-fi to "Saved by the Bell". And yet it thrives and becomes more popular with every sequel, no matter how bad the games are.
Now I ask...why not Phantasy Star? Was is marketing? Was it distribution? What happened to our Phantasy Star!!? I wish they would have called PSO something else. Anything else. And what are they doing with Phantasy Star Universe? I'm scared to hope for anything good. When will it stop? How much are they going to shake up everything we have all worked so hard to uncover in the stories of Algo? Are video games the new comic books, where we can just throw away YEARS of development and continuity and superb character development, just because some design team has no freiking idea what Phantasy Star is?
Sorry...I'm just frustrated. Does anyone else feel anything like this?

Get back ON topic.

Now shut up, or Ill drown you in maple syrup.
------------------End tangent......back to being on topic-like-----------------------------
I think most of the reason ANY game series has crapped out over the years is because of the advancement of technology. Now rather then trying to work solely on the story, alot of the focus goes to the graphics, and the content craps out. Back in the day it took minimal time to crank out the art for games. Now thats a good hunk of the time, visuals........sucks.
Also, most of the original design teams for games are long gone......and the new ones could be assumed to be complete idiots w/ no background.....>_<

[Edit by Arkhan on [TIME]1110168105[/TIME]]

Holy...ugh, this reminds me of a keenspot thread now.
Anyway, you've said it well Arkhan about graphics; nowadays the rising RPG generation are mostly graphic whores and care nothing about story, plot, or character development...the things that truly make an RPG and NOT the gutter trash that is sold nowadays. I don't think that the new disigners are neccesarily idiots, but rather are thinking about how they can make the most money in the least amout of time. I mean, look how quickly the sequel to FFX came out and look at how much it made. Not how GOOD the game was, but how much was made for the effort and expenses of the makers. Point in case, the beauty of RPGs is dying very quickly.

Ultima V > FFX-2 :-D
Might & Magic, AD&D Goldbox games > FFX-2!!!
Ys VI > All new games :-D.
.....except for Working Designs.........they will probably never suck at making games....they still rock the pretty non-3d gfx.......Lunar! :) WOo!

In responce to Arkhan and Malakai's posts: It's not fair to say graphics are the problem, it's that not many people want to change how things work with games.
It's almost like a moment from a Family Guy episode where there's a group of people thinking up a new show and one guy pipes up complaining about how it's the same crap over and over and that they need to do something new. They kill him for it....
It's probably true in reality, aside from the killing part, that they'll just avoid making something new. RPGs for example almost always have a moody person, a bimbo, a braindead muscle man, a perky kid, a halfway decent character that could have been better had he/she not been tossed into the trash game, an antisocial freak, and a quiet and innocent person all head off to stop some nut job from destroying/taking over the world.
There are a few lucky RPGs to break away from this, but how well known are they? Probably not well known at all, because the repeated crap gets plenty of advertising.
Then again movies, music, and TV shows have all fallen into that sort of problem. You've seen one type of movie and you've seen all movies of that type. Same with TV shows and music.
---------
In responce to the main post, so what if Phantasy Star Online isn't like the others? It's probably a decent game, aside from times you'll have to deal with morons, but I honestly couldn't say. I won't touch the game because it's online and I just dont like online games, if it were offline I'd have no problem with it I dont think.
Also it seems you dont want change. Would you honestly want them to revive the old series? It was good, but it came to an end and should be left that way. And you should be glad that they're trying something new but keeping some things from the original series.
But please explain to me how keeping a name and having a different setting "shakes up everything we have all worked so hard to uncover in the stories of Algo". I dont see how it'll affect something it's not tied to.

PSO Offline = fun. I played it that way first before diving into Online..............I prefer online while playing w/ people I know well..............Like on PSO PC, you can use KOTRTs IP Patch, and ShipServe, then play on a lan!.....its really fun that way.
The other thing, Graphics in games seem to be the newest thing that is required by gamers.......and the bulk of graphically pretty console games suck.......PC games are a different story, those are usually really fun all around.
How many people would still prefer playing Lunar 1 on PSX OR Sega CD...w/ the gimpy little 2d sprites and pretty backgrounds, VS. FFX where its a big flashy buncha hoohah......both can be beaten in about the same amount of time....which would you prefer?
Im glad Ys isnt stupided up!.....The gameplay has stayed the same, long live the HP bar....yknow? ...sure the new game has graphics that arent 16 bit.....but theyre not das uber like FFX and X2 tried putting out.....FFX had such a great theme to it, but it lacked in content ............
I still challenge people toplay through Ultima V if they call themselves hardcore RPers. The graphics were the least of the worry in that game.
