How radical could it get?

Postby Daren » Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:57 am

Could it be possible that both our solar system and Algo's are actually revolving around the same star but in different dimensions?
That idea just pop up in my mind a few nights ago and I'd like to know what you think? Heck is it even possible?
It would explain why there is a Dark Force there and here, I'm sure it's pretty easy for the profound darkness to travel through dimensions. So is it too radical?

In the realm of theoretical physics? It's not too radical at all. Quite plausible, really. People actually get paid to sit around all day and think "what if" in physics. There are several theories about infinite alternate universes, where every possible outcome that could happen has happened. It makes my brain asplode, which is why people who are better with science think these things and not me. I can't explain other "other universes" theories, other than our universe is but one "layer" of many universes, all stacked on top of each other, like phyllo dough. It's like a baklava of universes. I might be hungry right now...

We already know that black holes screw with the laws of the universe. It's possible that if you could pass through a black hole (hahahahah*deep breath*ahahahahaha) you would wind up in an alternate universe. I know a lot of people like to roll their eyes at the idea of Aron going through a black hole and ending up near Earth in a different time, but it's not the dimension-hopping that's a problem with this oft-used sci-fi trope, it's surviving the black hole. No one knows what black holes are made of, so it's entirely possible to go through one, dense as they may be. And here's where I have to end my discussion, because any further and we're getting into quantum physics, hence brain explosion. My point is, dimensions/alternate universes are not impossible and Sol being Algo in another dimension is entirely possible. And black holes scare the piss out of me.

In fact, you kind of need the dimensions excuse to make this theory work, as Sega took an existing star, Algol, located in the constellation Perseus and is just under 100 light years away from us, to use as the star of their planetary system. Of course, Sega still got it wrong, as Algol is a ternary star system, whereas Sega's Algol is only one star.

Well I BET we can get a debate out of this topic too

Postby Zucca » Tue Apr 05, 2011 8:31 pm

In our Universe Algol is a double star... Oh. TRIPLE star.

PSIII says that Alisa III travels only in time back to Algol. If we are to believe that then this different dimension thing cannot be true.
Once again someone else may want to dig up for evidence to support this or other way around.

I thought when Aron went through the black hole he ended up near Earth.

I still don't think it's out the realm of possibility. Algol has been closer to our own system in the past. Besides, with other dimensions there are basically no rules. There's nothing to say that an alternate star system in another dimension, called "Algo" is equivalent to our Sol system. Which is why it's one of the biggest cop-outs of sci-fi ever. "Oops, I have no idea where I was going with that. OH WELL! *hits the quantum leap button* Now spacetime has no meaning whatsoever! I can do whatever I want!" (No offense to Daren here. I'm just saying it's the #1 quick way to explain everything in speculative fiction.)

Now they're actually telling that there's only 9 dimensions. :(

Who is "they"? In Theoretical Physics there's the M-theory, which includes 11 dimensions.

I guess I'm defining "dimension" in Daren's case as "parallel universe," in which case there would be infinite dimensions.

Dimensions are one thing, but I would say the the multiverse theory is what you're looking for here. The mutiverse basically claims that there is an infinite amount of universes (not dimensions) out there, that represent every possible permutation of this one, as well as every "impossible" permutation. Everything from as mundane as if Tanith was a man to as strange as where gravity repels instead of attracts. If this is indeed the case, then it is indeed plausible for a simulacrum of the world of Phantasy Star to exist mere inches away from our faces, it's just a matter of if this theory is true. High-order dimensions provide a location where physical objects can be separated from physical space, but it isn't a cauldron of everything happening chaotically.

Right or wrong, fiction often uses "dimension" and "parallel universe" interchangeably, which is why I brought it up in my last post. I'm guessing Daren really meant "alternate universe" when he mentioned dimensions. It's not really accurate scientifically, but think about all the times in sci-fi where someone mentions "another dimension" and it really turns out to be a parallel universe. Another dimension would mean adding a dimension to all of the preexisting dimensions, so you wouldn't be going anywhere else, really. Or you'd introduce something extremely dangerous to our own reality, like warping time or messing with gravity (like you mentioned) or changing matter.

You know I'm happy there are so many smart people here, I had watched a TV documentary a few months back and can't remember the name but they were talking about the multivers theory? And that there could be an endless number of universe all playing out at the same place, that every time you made a decision about something, the universe actually split in 2 and both followed their own directions. So I started thinking about all of this and to me, it could be plausible that both our Sol System and Algo's be interlinked.
Tamith, The word dimension was wrongly used in this case, that comes from my french side of the equation ;)

Daren- See, I knew what you meant. ;) Blame it on sci-fi, which throws around the word dimension like a dog's favorite chew toy.

Which is why I keep saying sci-wfi writers should speak more to scientists...

Actually, they did pull alternate dimensions from science. Before the introduction of the multiverse theory, they had to have a place to pull unknowns from, and mathematicians used high-order dimensions to set up for some situations. They just didn't update their writing to match the cutting edge theories.

I'm sure some of them do but then twist that information into what suits them well. But then again, shows wouldn't be as interesting as they are.

And during these times they seem to be changing theories about everything like they're changing underwear every day...
