Phantasy Star IV Remake suddenly abandoned? Why?

Postby xrick » Wed May 26, 2010 3:27 pm

I know this may be an old topic and maybe already discussed, but I would like to know the reasons behind SEGA AGES leaving their possibly most prominent and awaited remake project on limbo to move on to another compilation game.

That's all...

The shitty compilation you speak about was Phantasy Star Complete Collection, which includes both English language and Japanese language versions, as well as the Game Gear and Text Adventures.

I'd hardly call it a shitty compilation, as it is the most comprehensive compilation ever made for the classic series. Art gallery, music gallery and high resolution scans for the manuals are even a bigger plus.

While a PS4 remake would have been good, the Complete Collection offers much more than a remake of PS4 ever would.

Sorry, you're right, I shouldn't have called it shitty, I corrected my first post.

But anyway, many where the people eager for the remake of the best Classic Phantasy Star game ever... So was I...

I was interested in a good PS4 remake, but for a cash-in, the Complete Collection was exactly how they should be done.

Packed full of games and extras.

What sucks is that those fools in Sega, didn't make an effort to release it outside Japan, even inside a bigger cash-in like Sonic's Genesis Collection for the PS3 and 360 (i think, but I'm not sure it got released...).

You're right, but wasn't there some sort of argument between SEGA and AGES?
I heard something about a disbandment of SEGA AGES or something...

Dunno. And this is a bad place to ask for isos... The owner and the admin could pop a blood vessel at any second... I think.

In any case, look online for the import. Don't think it's that hard to find nor tremendously expensive...

Or... you can go the way you were going already, but good luck doing it on your own.

OK, ISOs apart...

Wasn't there some other reason for AGES to stop with PS Complete Collection, leaving PS4 Remake behind their plans?

No idea. If it is so, then it sucks, because there were still a lot of games that would benefit from remakes.

OK... Then this one is off. Thanks for your time...

By the way, I sent a mail to GagaGames, where Orakio blogs about many gaming stuff, Phantasy Star included.

Here's what I can discern, since I followed/purchased the games:

Sega formed 3D AGES with D3, having majority control over the venture. The first few games, including Phantasy Star, were made with both companies. For the most part, the remakes were panned (if you play the collection that was released over here, you can see for yourself). Even Phantasy Star Generation:1, which was one of the better remakes, could easily be identified as a budget title (though I still maintain that it wasn't as bad as some say).

Around the 16th game, Sega took complete control and 3D Ages was no more. Phantasy Star Generation:2, which was Vol. 17 for instance, is only a "Sega" game, not a "3D Ages" game (though the games continued to use the "Sega Ages 2500" label). Once the new titles in production were completed, Sega turned the label in one that published compilations only. Very complete compilations, but compilations nonetheless.

Why this happened is anyone's guess. Maybe discord, maybe Sega decided to just do everything in-house, maybe sales were disappointing...it's all speculation. Personally, I was sad to see it happen because it damned any chance of the PS remakes coming to North America. Plus, while the PSI remake made some questionable choices, I thought the PSII remake has a huge leap in the right direction. It would have been interesting to see how PSIV was tackled.

That, my friend, was the best reply I could get for this topic.
No more doubts or questions from my part for this place, thanks...
