it explicitely states this
"Mother Brain was installed in AW 845. and it originally had many problems until
downgrading to version 3.11"
Now if that doesn't make you old comp users chuckle..
THEN YOU NEED HUMOR LESSONS! ^_^
[Edit by Lord Khyron on [TIME]1082414576[/TIME]]

[Edit by Lord Khyron on [TIME]1082415242[/TIME]]

Interesting, except that it doesn't actually indicate anything unless the translator inserted the version number, considering that Phantasy Star 2 was released in 1989 in Japan, and Windows 3.x was released in the United States in 1992.

Naflign reports that he had no part in choosing that number, but he suggested that I check it against the Japanese language ROM to make sure that it wasn't his translator making a joke.
Naflign indicates that he doesn't think the script translator would've made such a reference. According to him, the translator was especially dedicated to making sure that the script was as accurate as possible.
So if it's in the Japanese ROM, we can be certain that it wasn't a reference to Windows at all, but rather, a peculiar coincidence. Otherwise, the guy that translated the script made a joke.

[Edit by PhanGarrett on [TIME]1082656991[/TIME]]

Update:
I've gone and checked the original Japanese version of Phantasy Star 2, as well as the official Sega localized version, and between those two and Naflign's Re-translated version, only the Re-translated version offers a version number for Mother Brain. I'm confering with Naflign on the PSDB to get more information on this, so I'll post more information as I get it.

First the PS:G retranslation change by the group who translated it..
Now this put into the PS 2 translated rom.
Can we trust people fan translating roms?
I just want opinions.

Personally... I'd say the jury's still out on the consistency of this particular comment. At this point in time, we know that the characters "3.1" do not exist in that particular portion of the script, and we know that Naflign knows nothing of any intended reference to Windows. For all we know, there may have been some other equivalent description of downgrading to "Mother Brain v3.1" in the Japanese version that didn't specifically use those characters. It could be the case that the particular sentence in Japanese was phrased in such a way that stating a version number wouldn't be necessary (much like how in the resulting translation, the version number that it was downgraded from didn't need to be mentioned for the sentence to make sense), but the translator couldn't think of an intelligent-sounding way to phrase the sentence without including a version number, and he therefore used the first version-sounding number that came to mind-- "3.1".
It could be argued that coming up with an alternative sentence to omit the version number may not be terribly difficult to any of us, but I might point out that given the punctuation and spelling errors in the translation, English is probably not this person's first language, and furthermore, he doesn't seem to be terribly well-versed in English's finer details; so finding such a phrase may've indeed been more difficult for him than simply steering the sentence to include a trivial detail, that is overall unimportant to the game.
