Phantasy Star Generation:1 English translation project

I have some good news! I'm working on an update to Kyence's translation. The biggest change will be that it will have Phantasy Star generation:2's font, meaning more room!

Keep in mind that I don't know Japanese, so it's more like an edit than a fresh translation.

At the moment, I need to test every item, equipment, and spell description. I would like to be able to test them before playing the game fully, if it's at all possible. Some names of stuff don't line up perfectly with their descriptions in the data.

Edit 1 - Halfway through the main script. Right now, I'm worried that I may have to play through the entire game without cheats to test out the descriptions of the inventory stuff. Which would mean I'm essentially going to have to play through the entire game twice. Does anyone have any Memory Card saves available for me to do some testing with? Preferably at or near the end of the game. I tried the only save on GameFAQs and it was too far at the end of the game for me to work with; I was cut off from all the shops except those in Paseo.

Edit 2 - It's done. I've sent everything off to Tryphon so he can compile the v2.00 ISO. My hand hurts.

Credits were translated. Original names are in, both character names (Alisa, Tylon, Lutz.) and spell names. (Flaeli, Froze, Snow Slider.) There probably won't be a second patch, since doing this is horribly time-consuming. I have been sitting at my desk for the past 14 hours trying to get this done. I think I can see into the fourth dimension now. Dear god almighty.

Testing begins whenever Tryphon gets back to me. Please look forward to it.

Edit 3 - Before we could even test v2.00, I needed to make v2.10. Tylon and LaShiec become Tyrone and La Shiec. I also have fixed some potential bugs in the font. All we have left now is to wait on a name confirmation from Kyence, (Is it Mizeris Lutz Isa Lanai, and if so, how is it spelled?) and I can finally ship it off to Tryphon. I'm really hoping to have it ready shortly before or after PS generation:2's translation is out.

@SandyLandale Great news! Once the translation is done, please send me a PM here and we can release this updated translation here at the PS Cave PSG1 pages! Just make sure to give me a shout a week or two before release and we can ensure to do our part in time.

Thought I would write this down now although I completely understand that there may be some time before we are there.

Yeah, I'm going to spend the next hopefully four days testing everything. I think Tryphon implied he was going to help me as well, but I'm not sure if he's still working on generation:2 with Kyence (And Hiei-?) or not.

Regardless, I have wanted to do this since I had seen the script in the first place. It's not a terrible script; it's fantastic, really. I only expanded maybe 10% of it? And I updated terms and standards to be like Phantasy Star generation:2's translation. The menu and system text are really what killed me.

Thank you for the kudos, Missagh. I'll cherish them. :D

It's great that you managed to make it happen since it'll make things much easier to understand.
But why did you change Tylon to Tyrone? Yes, I may be bickering but I can't avoid doing it... :?

Changed it to Tyrone because it was as such in Kyence's script and I needed to keep it consistent, this is the absolute last time I want to hear about this, ever. Unless the devs of the original Phantasy Star descend from the heavens unto my doorstep and beat me half to death with large foam bats that say "HIS NAME IS TYLON, YOU STUPID FAT WHITE BOY," it's not changing.

I may have been bickering left and right today between both projects, that's right...
But it doesn't mean that you have to pay full attention to it, I'm just stating my opinions on them.
Since you're the ones working on both projects, you're free to do as you please... I think... :?

OK. Sorry about that...

Now that I got the anger out, let me say that I prefer Tylon too, to be honest, but I'm kind of at the mercy of Kyence and co. It's kind of a "prequel" situation, where you have to adhere to what came after it instead of what comes after taking a precedent from the previous release.

Edit - I also want to say that, in my defense, I spent 20 hours of my life off and on trying to get this release out. You don't know how badly I want an updated Phantasy Star generation:1 translation. You just don't. Alis Landale is one of my all-time favorite video game heroines, and I just wanna see her game done justice with a better font and no more goddamn abbreviations.

Not trying to call Kyence out or poo-poo her work, but I never liked seeing things like GFLAR and SHORT SWD in any video game ever, and I never will.

Anyway, whenever Tryphon gets back to me, the testing shall begin in earnest. I'm just killing time until then...

Maybe Kyence changed her mind for the names, probably as simple as that (and it won't be a problem if an updated version of PSGEN1 translation is released).

It won't be too long, I hope.

We ran into some technical issues we didn't expect, and the pace at which I can work doesn't match the pace at which Tryphon can work, so the new release date is...

It'll be done when it's done.

Sorry, gang. Everything's there, just--those issues make it really hard to test the game right now. I am confident that, unless Tryphon or I run into some unforeseen circumstances, it should still be out this year. But the key word there is should.

Please look forward to it.

Edit - Here's a comparison though.

See how much space is saved by the new font? It's wonderful. Ahhh...

Amazing, it's really looking more and more like a real english version, nice job :D

By the way, there was someone here mentioning a reference to Tower of Babel regarding Baya Malay or something...
Does someone know what was that all about? For curiosity's sake, of course... :P

The major bug has been fixed and testing has resumed! I'm currently trying to get the shortcake in Naula. Nothing to really note right now.

Edit - More comparison shots! Alisa's status menu.

Just like in PS gen:2, we're going to be going for the original spell names. I'm the one who chose spellings for the romaji.
