Fighting games aren't held in high regard in the story department, BECAUSE they let you do things of that nature, LaconianShot. The emphasis is on gameplay, as the story is just there along for the ride. Fighting games last about what... 20 minutes a playthrough, tops?
The point Benoit is getting at, is that introducing an intentional means of reviving a character who was supposed to stay dead brings in something of a nasty loophole in the story. "Hey, Nei is dead and can never be revived, because her sister Neifirst is dead... EXCEPT if you go through this overly convoluted process to revive her."

Again, it's a bonus... the original impact is already made through her death, and it's viewed as a reward, if you will, for completing both PSG1 and PSG2. After all, players have already tried finding such a loophole in any case, showing desire for such a feature. Lastly, we have to think of the people who will be purchasing the game... Phantasy Star fans, of course, who have already been impacted by Nei's death.

Fighting games last about what... 20 minutes a playthrough, tops?

Depends how skilled you are. After all, most people aren't skilled enough to beat an arcade fighter, so playthrough could take from 20 to 60 minutes. I suppose your estimation would be correct as far as a home console version goes.
The original impact is cheapened when you can just bring the character back, or they come back in some fashion. It's not too much unlike Millenia's "death scene" in Grandia 2 where it commenced with all the melodrama and sob-fests on her "sacrificing herself" in the Moon of Valmar, which came off as noble up until a few moments later when "oh wait sorry, I was just leading you all on" and she's back to help you fight the last few bosses.
So what's next... we'll have Alys tag along for the adventure in Phantasy Star IV as a bonus? That'll do a great job of rendering the whole funeral scene, vengeance against Zio, and the event in Anger Tower pretty meaningless. "Oh hey, she's not dead... she's right here!"

No, no, PSG3 will feature the ability to revive Seth. *snicker*
The whole idea of reviving Nei is kind of "...", though. I guess it's nice enough, but... Well, from a storyline perspective, it's rather... Well, I suppose the term "WTF?" comes to mind. O_o;

i think reviving Nei would do to our heads what Re-Faze did to Chaz's head... after we'd finally got over mourning the deaths of the people we'd kept alive, seen mature and grow stronger for so long, resurrecting them as a cheap gimmick would make me angry. Then i'd not fight them on purpose, learn megid, then megid their ass.

Every bonus in gameplay is welcome, if you prefer Nei dead, just don't revive her when playing PSG2 for the second time. Very simple, there's nothing in the game that forces you to revive her after the battle with Neifirst.

[Edit by Synbios on [TIME]1115006936[/TIME]]

nah, i'd rather go into the other, screwed-up version of the plot, play it 'till i learn Megid and then kill myself dramatically. then i'll have megidded the ass of the people who revived nei!

Yes, you can revive her, but you don't have to do it, just my opinion.
And yes, I'd love to see Alys end even Seth(this one in a storyline branch Langrisser-style) revived in PSG3.

i don't think i'd use alys anyway. her stats weren't that great and slicers aren't the best weapons in the game. kyra can use slicers AND techs! nei, on the other hnd, would kick the others' ass if you upgraded her weapons and levelled her up.

Yes, you can revive her, but you don't have to do it, just my opinion.

But that doesn't matter! Just the fact that it can be done (legitimately, I might add), is enough. That's the whole point.

And yes, I'd love to see Alys end even Seth(this one in a storyline branch Langrisser-style) revived in PSG3.

Great. More cheapening of plot. Seriously, what are you guys thinking? %)

I'm thinking it was you who first told me about how to revive Nei in the original PSII.

Variations on the theme. Same reason we get a lot of crappy fan fiction :)
