Myau or Meow?

Postby DarkMyau » Sat Jan 20, 2018 9:30 pm

I was watching the Tetris west coast championships (still am) And Jonas Neubauer himself called me Dark Meow.

That's not my name!!!! Well.....my names Damon but that's beside the point.

I pronounce Myau as My-U. Always have. I think DarkMy-U sounds cool.

I dont wanna be darkmeow and am willing to throw a tantrum over it (despite being 40 and having kids of my own). Also because I use a Myau avatar, I keep getting called a Pokemon.

So I ask to all the true Phantasy Star Phanatics: How do you pronounce "Myau"?

I pronounce it "my awl" or as a longer more drawn out "mao". It's definitely a feline sound but I don't think it's meow.

I remember reading that in Japanese it's supposed to be pronounced "meow". But personally I also pronounce it as "miao".

It's definitely supposed to be pronounced like "meow", I'm afraid, as ミャウ is literally one way of writing the English "meow" in Japanese (there are a couple of others depending on what kind of stress and accent you're trying to mimic, but myau is by no means uncommon).

I always read it as "meow" personally, though I suppose it does kind of make sense to want to read "mya" as "My-Ah" instead of "Me-Ah" when you consider a name like "Ryan" in English and its pronunciation. In any case, considering Phantasy Star's long history of English language names that don't correspond to the Japanese originals (Rudy > Chaz, Fal > Rika, Lyla > Alys, Thray > Rune, Eusis > Rolf, etc... :P), I wouldn't feel particularly bound to obey Japanese naming conventions if it doesn't feel right to you. :'D
