Gwyn kind of sucks. Her magic is not very strong, and while she is stronger than her mother in combat, her combat skills are nothing to write home about. Rika, on the other hand, is incredible.

Rika is one of teh best characters in Phantasy Star. She is a better version of Nei.

And easy win over Laya2. Who is just as weak and useless as her mother

Gwyn is actually weaker than her mother, in my opinion, because she gets no growth in magic until level 40. You can't just turn up Gires all the way and expect to keep your party healed with Gwyn. You have to have Kara do it. She's physically stronger than Laya, but Chirpers are practically physically stronger than Laya.
