Series continuity issues...*SPOILERS*

Postby etony33 » Wed Jan 08, 2014 12:03 am

Okay, maybe someone can shed some light on a few of these:

-After each time he is defeated, Dark Force lays dormant for 1,000 years. However, the people of Earth created Mother Brain well before Dark Force was set to return. In Phantasy Star IV, Le Roof states that Dark Force destroyed Palma in order to weaken the Algol seal. However, the Earth people stated that their intention was to take over Algo for themselves, including destroying Palm. Was Dark Force behind their nefarious plans while he was dormant, or were they acting independent of each other?

-In Phantasy Star I, there is a town called Uzo in Motavia. It is not on an island. In Phantasy Star II, there is an Uzo Island, but no town. In Phantasy Star IV, there is a town called Uzo that is on an island. What's the deal with that?

-What happened to the giant crevice where the Skure spaceport was by Phantasy Star IV?

-In Phantasy Star IV, the town of Termi claims to be the hometown of Alis Landale. However, there was no town called Termi in Phantasy Star II (and besides that, Camineet on Palma was Alis's hometown). WTF?

-What happened to Paseo between the events of Phantasy Star II and Phantasy Star IV?

-At the end of Phantasy Star III (well, in three of the four possible endings), the Alisa III ends up going to Earth. Earth is inhabited. But, didn't Phantasy Star III take place 1,000 years after Phantasy Star II (or 2,000 according to the Japanese version), and wasn't Earth destroyed and uninhabitable well before the events of Phantasy Star II?

-Speaking of Phantasy Star III, if it did run concurrent with Phantasy Star IV, Orakio and Laya's war took place less than a year after the destruction of Palm. Why would the people fall into those factions so quickly after boarding the Alisa III? If it happened 1,000 years after the events of Phantasy Star IV (as in the Japanese version), how the hell was Dark Force still alive after Profound Darkness had been destroyed?

I'll probably think of more...

You'll find dozens of threads on this forum about each of these issues.

Some points though :
* PS1 original name is 'Phantasy Star', dot. No sequel was schedulded at this time
* PS2 was designed as a sequel to PS1, by the same team, but its scenario is likely a mix of two pre-scenarii, one of these having almost no connection with PS1 (broadly, the Motavia part)
* PS3 was developped more or less at the same time than PS2, and its connexion with former episodes is very thin. I wonder sometimes if it was not designed as an independant game at the very early stages of its development
* PS4 is trying more or less to bind this fragile building, and does that quite badly (I don't like this episode)

So I think these issues are inavoidable considering the whole series was not designed as a whole since the beginning. Think of Star Wars, compared to Lord of The Rings, for example (I don't believe a second the legend that says that Lucas has written 9 *precise* scenarii before making the first).

As for the theories developped to fix these issues, I find all of them deeply uninteeresting, but maybe you'll find happiness in time-cycling paradox...

Not entirely correct. A new Dark Force is being released by the Profound Darkness every 1000 years when the seal weakens.
However, the people of Earth created Mother Brain well before Dark Force was set to return.

The Earthmen's Dark Force came from Earth, and was the creation of the evil in their hearts.
What happened to the giant crevice where the Skure spaceport was by Phantasy Star IV?

It's still there if you look at a map, though it seems to be encased in ice.
In Phantasy Star IV, the town of Termi claims to be the hometown of Alis Landale.

No, it doesn't. They just claim that the heroine liked the town.
At the end of Phantasy Star III (well, in three of the four possible endings), the Alisa III ends up going to Earth.

Only in Aron's ending. The planet in the other ending isn't named.
Earth is inhabited. But, didn't Phantasy Star III take place 1,000 years after Phantasy Star II (or 2,000 according to the Japanese version), and wasn't Earth destroyed and uninhabitable well before the events of Phantasy Star II?

After travelling through the black hole, Wren mentions that they travelled through time and space.
If it happened 1,000 years after the events of Phantasy Star IV (as in the Japanese version), how the hell was Dark Force still alive after Profound Darkness had been destroyed?

Simple. Dark Force doesn't depend on the Profound Darkness for survival. It's its own entity.

The biggest problem is that they obviously changed the setting to Motavia at the last minute, because it reminds one more of Palma.
PS3 was developped more or less at the same time than PS2

What makes you say that?

No, it was designed as a Phantasy Star game, but one that was going to be very different. It was supposed to keep hinting at a connection, and then in the end pull out the rug from under your feet. But as we all know, they didn't get the time to finish the game.

Also keep in mind that 2000 years have passed since the "heroine" (they didn't even remember her name) had lived. History tends to get inaccurate, especially when devastating episodes occur as have happened in the PS universe. Knowledge is bound to have been lost. If they lost the name of the heroine, loosing information about her birthplace also might get lost. Also we were never shown Alis was actually born in Camineet. A town of Termi might have been founded on Motavia during the PSI age, but that's a stretch, I admit it. But historical inaccuracy is plausible.

As far as Uzo goes, it already had a small lake next to it before MB altered the planet. The large ocean probably gobbled up the space surrounding Uzo and it became abandoned as people may not have liked to live on an island. It might have been resettled later. No problems there if you ask me.

After PSII there was probably a lot of turmoil. Paseo was probably lost in it, hence it no longer featuring in PSIV.

Thought of another one. Told you I would.

Considering Rulakir is not only Orakian, but Orakio's brother, why is it that he can use techniques?

OH...

How did Maia end up in Landen, washed up on a beach, with amnesia? Why was Aquatica frozen? Who altered the weather control system, if anyone? Are these events related?

If you start to enumerate all what is wrong in PSIII, at least we can hope this board won't die in the next 2 years :)
