I think you should ヽ( ´¬`)ノ It took me a really long time to getting around to playing the first game, mainly cause I didn't know how to get sega saturn emulators to work (or realized that i could just download the gba collection and play it on a gba emu ahahahha) and it wasn't untill I got Sonic's Sega Genesis Collectio for PS3 that I played it. In a nutshell the game is about a girl named Alis Landale who watches her brother die right in front of her and decides to go on a journey to avenge his death which also leads her to save the galaxy too I guess.
The game sets up the foundation of the whole series (though to me PSO and games after it seem to throw it all away save for keeping meseta, names of healing items, numans/newmans to some extent, and some pathetic refs/cameos from the first few games I mean) and gives you more insight on things that happen in the other games (like Lutz/Noah, Alis' importance, PS4 makes a lot of refs to PS1). The fight in the game is set up differently from PS2-4, with the dungeons being first person and instead of having multiple of the same enemies across the screen, you only see one sprite of it and then maybe 2 to 8 HP things to show that you're fighting more than one., though in the remake its made more like the other games.
The original version is kinda dated now (more so than phantasy star 2 to me, but that doesnt stop me) and the walking is slow along with the way you talk to people in towns being kind of weird (you walk in front of them to talk instead of trying to talk to them from the side). Other than that, those are the only cons I can think of the original version.
The remake, Generation 1, on the other hand is well, a remake. Updated graphics, remixed music, you can run faster, and they took the battle system from PS4 and change it up a little bit. The remake also adds more depth to all the characters, which the original game didn't do (it doesn't make the original game any less of what it was though, especially since they had to fit hardware requirements). Dungeons are all still first person too. Also. if you finish this game and then start the phantasy star 2 remake with your save file (if im correct), you can revive Nei in the game (after doing some other tedious things, you'd have to look up the process on your own)
I'm not sure if this all really help answered your question, but if you want my opinion, I'd say you should. I think it's both worth it and if you like old Phantasy Star games in general I think you will end up liking it in some way in the end. Whether its the original or the remake, either are good. You can just play one of them, or play the original first and then play the remake to see the differences or vice versa, Deciding which one to play is only a matter of whether you feel like being old school or wanting to play something slightly newer, but in the end you get the same story. I've been playing both the old game (on 2 different systems actually) and the remake off and on rn and I like both the same. I hope this helped you out a bit, if at all ヽ( ´¬`)ノ
Help I have Phantasy Star'd and can't get up
