[PS4] Lost in Translation

Postby dagothchicken » Wed Apr 17, 2013 11:32 am

I've been playing through Phantasy Star IV with a friend, and we're noticing places where the translation quality is somewhat lacking. The most notable example thus far is probably the incredible opportunity to willfully misread any dialogue related to "Birth Valley", but there are several less entertaining, and frequently bewildering, smaller lines. Following are a few of the most recent clips that've given us pause. What others have we missed? Can anyone explain what in the world is going on?

At the Machine Center, I suspect there's a pun that slipped through here:
Chaz: I have no idea what these machines are, but this is some place. You're pretty adept at handling these machines. Were you caught by Zio while you were trying to get the system back under control?
Demi: Yes, that's right. Zio is very violent.
Gryz: Very funny.

After getting the Psycho-wand, I know they're worried about Alys, but something feels missing:
Chaz: We did it!
Gryz: So, as long as we have this Psycho-wand, there's no need to fear Zio.
Demi: You two, is anything wrong?
Rune: Rika... you too!
Rika: Rune...
Gryz: What's going on, you two?

Rune: Chaz! We've got to return to Krup right away!
Chaz: Huh?
Rune: Get a move on it! We're leaving!

I can answer the second one: Rika is feeling Black Wave activity just like Rune.

Maybe one of the prototype translations can shed light on the first one... Huh, it's the same text. I have no idea, then.

It's probably true that things were missed in translation, but I never saw anything off with those two examples.

For the first, I thought the pun was fairly obvious. But maybe that's just me. ^^;

What pun, though? Stating that he's violent is just a plain truth with no comedic connection to the preceding conversation, and I don't see anything unusual in his English name.

It may be just that, as simple as it is. Gryz feels the way he does, which warrants his bitter response since he likely doesn't find it funny at all.

I wouldn't look into it too much, not until someone gets bored and decides to do a translation. =P To me, I didn't see anything special with it beyond the obvious~
