Playing PS:G1 (eng) on PS2

Postby theraa » Thu Mar 21, 2013 10:15 pm

Hi all!

Being thankful to Kyence for the awesome translation I was thinking to beat the PS:G1.

But actually I don't like PCSX2 much so I was thinking of mod my PS2, burn the ISO and try to play it on the original hardware. Unfortunately, it was said in the readme file that playing on a PS2 has not confirmed. But maybe somebody already tried it out (and even succeeded)?

I haven't heard of anyone (My PS2 got fried and my PS3 controller works well with PCSX2), but if you can get your system to play homebrews it shouldn't have any problems with the patch.

Kyence did not alter the code of the game (it is not a 'hack') so it should work. I don't have a PS2 though.

PSGEN2 translation, to the contrary, is quite heavily hacked. But hiei- beta-tested it a lot so I could fix I hope all issues which prevented to use it on a PS2 (yes, a game can run fine on PCSX2 and not on a PS2).

Gamefaqs has a section for PSG1, and there were people there who discussed this very topic.

Unfortunately, the topic was locked a long while back. But perhaps this gives you some idea of what to do. ^^

It's truly an excellent translation and a labor of love.

Unfortunately, I want to puke every time I read "Lassic". His name is Emperor Reipard La Shiec At least Tryphon and friends could have had the decency to add one character to his name and call him "Lashiec" a la PSIV. But "Lassic" seems so clumsy, bordering on sacrilegious.

The readme gives "nostalgia" as the reason for this. Whaaa!?

I have nothing to do with the translation itself, I've just written some script to modify the font.

Kyence was forced to use translated texts whose length was the same than the japanese, which explains short names.

I'm currently working on removing this limitation, among other things (it's almost done) so if she (or anyone else) wants to use longer names and text, it'll be possible.

I played a few minutes of this on my actual PS2 (which is modded) and encountered some strange problems. Everything was fine, I left the starting town, fought a fly, and went to the next eastern most town however when I got there several character's sprites were all distorted. I then noticed as Alis faced south her sprite was fine, East & West there was an odd bar in the middle of her, and North her feet would vanish.

Was any memory addressing changed for the translation to perhaps gain more text space? If so could it be causing these problems? It's almost as if the sprite data was not completely loaded.

It's indeed strange. Could you post a pic ?

I noticed, when hacking PSGEN1, that Kyence did move some string pointers to supposedly blank spaces. It should not happen with my hack, it can't write outside the areas where strings were located in the original version.

Of course. Here are some pics right after I left the first town and fought one of those fly monsters. You can see her sprite from different angles. This continues with other NPC's in the next town over.

The strange thing is that I've never observed such a phenomenon playing on PCSX2, and I don't see why it'd occur on a real PS2 and not on the emu.

Which version of Kyence's translation do you play ? Lutz or Noah ?

This is the "Lutz" version. As you continue in the game other npc sprites are also distorted.

There was someone who used the esr to do it without any problems in a different thread. Since I do not have a modded PS2 I can't vouch for it personally. For convenience, I will link to the post and the link within it here:

http://www.pscave.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3032&start=315#p53994

http://theisozone.com/tutorials/ps2/general/how-to-convert-a-playstation-2-cd-based-game-to-dvd-for-use-with-esr/

This was provided by the user Treepop,so if it works, they'd be the ones to thank :D

I did a very low-level hex mod with the PSG1,so it could be causing these issues, since I only had the means to test it on PSCX2 with a Japanese BIOS. I hope this works for you.
