Fighting PS1 Dark Force in PS4

Postby Patraw » Fri Feb 10, 2012 4:21 pm

I know that there's a Phantasy Star I style Dark Force enemy (Pro Phallus) in the final dungeon of Phantasy Star IV, but I've never been able to encounter it, despite playing through the game multiple times and specifically hanging around in the dungeon getting into lots of random battles. Is there a special trick to fighting it, or a particular area where the encounter is more common? I've read something about getting into a random battle at precisely the moment the flashing floor light is on the tile that you're standing on, is that the deal?

As long as I can remember...no special trick to do so your message catch my attention.. my last game on PSIV and especially at the end of the game is very far away but I'm quasi sure of it.. maybe the others have better explanations ?

I've ran into the smug bastard long ago, my mom used to run whenever she encountered it. It's more common on one side of the dungeon, but I can't remember whether it's the first area or the last before the straight walkways to the boss. I know it's halfway rare, like those zio-style punks in Nurvus.

I'm fairly certain that every time I've encountered one, it was in that last straight hallway right before the PD. I'd sometimes just wander up and down for a while looking for them.

Well, some people here are apparently pro-phallus. (Or at least pro-Pro Phallus.)

Prophalli are more common in the level where you find PD. The encounter rate is low, but should be nothing that would prevent you from finding it if you hang around it for 15 minutes or so.

Yeah, you'll find it in the area where there's the purple distortion in the background. All other colors, not so much.

Well, I finally found, and fought, a Prophallus Saturday night. I encountered it in the vertical dungeon section just prior to the final area that leads to Profound Darkness, after walking up and down dozens of times and fighting piles of normal foes. Thanks to everyone for their input! Now, at long last, I've seen, and done, everything that PS4 has to offer.

I've heard before that you must run into the encounter while the tile you are on is flashing white... you know, how the tiles flash? I really have no idea if that is true or not... I always just assumed it was random.

I don't know how random encounters are triggered in Phantasy Star IV, but if it's anything like in Phantasy Star III, it's not that random.

Phantasy Star III uses a step counter. It stores a random number in memory every time you enter a map and after every encounter. When the step counter matches this random number, an encounter is triggered.

A couple years ago I stumbled on a tool-assisted Phantasy Star III speedrun. Reading the author's comments gave me this insight.
