PSG vs the originals?

Okay, I have no intention of playing the remakes of the first two Phantasy Stars (PSGI or PSG2) unless it's translated to english. But I am wondering what the differences are between the originals versus the remakes. And no, I don't mind spoilers in this case. =P

Would anyone care to answer this for me? ^^;

I've been playing PSG:2 untranslated without any knowledge of Japanese for a bit, I can say that there is a lot of redone art, and there's a lot of expanded dialogue. It is also possible to bring Nei back from her death, but you basically have to go through hell to trigger everything that is required to make it possible. The basic plot is the same, and with PSG:2, they didn't fix the problem with characters holding 2 weapons who attack the same way with both. I haven't touched PSG:1, mainly because I am waiting for a translation so I don't repeat the mistake of learning what new techniques do the hard way.

I don't know about PSG:1, but PSG:2 is almost the same story as the original. Differences that I know of are: an expanded scene with Nei at the beginning, the Commander seems to have something to say each time someone joins the team, you have the ability to talk inside your group like in PSIV, under an extremely difficult-to-attain set of conditions you can revive Nei after defeating Neifirst, there is supposedly a sidequest for each person that joins your team, and there is a secret area to get a higher-quality claw for Nei if you still have her on Dezo. (She looks even meaner than Rolf in the ending screens)

Every character has some kind of special skill that can be used after certain amount of defending/idling in battle. Most of them seem to be useless. Nei has quite a nice skill.

I played the remake of the second without a translation and it played just fine (I've enough Japanese to read a comment here or there, but that's it) and it's definitely worth your time if you've got a Japanese PS2, especially if they aren't going to make an English translation (which I doubt they would). The upgrade of graphics alone was enough to get me to trudge through the Japanese text and the plot is enough the same where you'll be able to figure it out if you played the original a million times as a kid. In addition, the battle system has been changed so that you can "power-up" your attacks, though the more powerful they are the longer they take to execute. Further, when your characters are being attacked, you are given the chance to time a button press to shave off some of the damage (similar to what's used in Lost Odyssey and Last Remnant if you've ever played them). All this makes battle a bit more interactive.

Another new feature is item creation (for which there is a good tutorial online) for your party members who are left at home. Not too much, but it's still a fun idea.

Seems like they added quite a few small features. =o Thanks for all the information on PSII! Still curious about PSI, but with the fan translation that's being done, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be finished.

I recomend the videos of their gameplay on youtube. Both games look very nice and smooth, and for what people say, some tasks became more complex and now demand more exploration and more dialogues (perharps more storyline) to be done, which is nice. I love the new artwork of the main characters particularly, I think this is the best part of the legacy that PSO has left to the franchise. The cutscenes are sweet, and the specials mentioned above look nice too, though sometimes I can`t tell what is exactly happening in the videos.

My only complain is the arrangement of some songs. I found the city theme in PSG1 a bit irritating.

Almost forgot the question I was going to ask thanks to the account activation thing taking days, but here goes:

I was originally going to ask if anyone had translations of the full conversations between the cast and the Earthmen, because I wanted to know exactly what they intended to do with the Algol solar system because the original Pstar2 made absolutely no sense - We're jealous of your happy lives so we're going to go out of our way to build a planetary control system to fix up ur stuffs and 3 satellites large enough to nuke every one of your planets if they were to ever crash into them instead of just invade and conquer u all! lol brilliant, right? I was hoping there was something added to this in the updates so that I could include this into my own PStar project (for a game or doujin I hope) I'm working on. Some of this was answered by the timeline, but other questions would be answered upon reading the translation.

Other unrelated question I have are:

- Do the Earthmen know magic?
- What game is it where Alis learns techniques, or was there a game where she did? (Did not play all the way through PS1)
- I assume the monsters that started popping up during Lassic's rule were canonically Earth mythological?

There's a manga called Phantasy Star Outside Saga published in issues of SPEC where Alis and Noah/Lutz end up in another solar system. The Compendium states that Noah/Lutz introduced the Techniques to Algol when they came back.
