Phantasy Star IV retranslation

Postby IndispensablePeaGuy » Wed Dec 08, 2010 9:25 pm

Any news on any projects regarding a fan translation of PSIV to make it faithful to the Japanese version?

Or at least correct the grammatical errors which dwell in the localised script?

"The one who revived Zio as a god?" What the fuck.

Oh, and include the nude spirit monsters as well, please. Us nerds need a wank.

It's bullshit. The final boss was a nude demon-archangel yet these enemy sprites are forbidden fruit according to the bible bashing, censoring nazis.

It's the same bullshit when Sega America altered the Demon King war script from Shining Force II. In the Japanese version, it was originally Zeon, the victor and the main antagonist of the game; Darksol, father of Dark Sol/Melvyn and a recurring main antagonist of the old Shining games: Shining Force 1 and Shining Force Final Conflict; and finally Lucifer, who has not appeared in any of the games. Lucifer was replaced in the English version by the final boss of Shining Force 1 - Dark Dragon - because it might offend the Christian community or something.

I'm guessing that should've been "The one whom Zio revered as a god?"

On the one hand, hurrah, no more Raja having a blank text box during a plot event.

On the other hand, they're gonna go change the names back, aren't they? Fal is a silly name, I'm sorry. So is whatever they want to romanize Rune's old name as.

I don't mind the Japanese names. What I wanna see is how the hell they're going to fit the names into the four letter slots of the menus, etc.

I came up with: Rudy, Lyla, Hahn, Tray, Pike, Fal, Forn, Raja, and Shes. I can't think of an acceptable shorter version for Freyna.

Can't think of any romanisation of Freyna that uses less than five letters either, but if you think Fal sounds silly, you can always call her "Faru" or "Falu" instead... ;)

Frey, Fren, Frea, Reyn, Rena.

And Kyra could be Cess as well.

Yeah. I've been thinking that too since the first time I saw this beta nude.

I suppose if you speculate that Freyna might be a terrible adaption of the Norse goddess Freyja, you could go with Frea and hope people don't pronounce it "free," "free-ah" or "fray."

Fay/Fae/Faie is fairly close and an acceptable, non-silly name. It fits Demi, too, because she's cute and sprightly.

Tray is too much noun. I'd snicker if I saw it as a character's name. Trey is better, though the name doesn't suit him at all.

Fal is pretty silly. Fáel is a Gaelic word meaning "wolf," so I wonder if that's where they got the idea for Fal.

Forren/Forn is also incredibly stupid, and Kyra Tierney is pretty darn Oirish, but it's better than Shess, which sounds like something I'd name a snake.

Hi everyone,

I dumped the Japanese script last year sometime and started to translate it, but I got too busy with "real life", so I shelved it. Now I'm (slowly) working on Rent A Hero, which I think is more worth the time, since PSIV already has a pretty good translation.

I can make my script dump available if anybody's interested.

Is it possible to hack into the game's rom and alter certain enemies' moves? I've been thinking of giving The Profound Darkness a few moves, like an instant death spell, to make the battle more challenging and epic.
