Originally humans couldn't drink cow milk at all, because it'd make them feel really bad. That we can drink it is a recent evolution. We evolve to make us like things that have things the body needs.

Not all humans have evolved to like milk. The Chinese haven't, for instance.
I haven't drank milk since I was three years old. I just don't like the taste of it.

Ah, I'm going to sounds like an uppity snob here. Oh well.

Listen, if it's necessary to identify myself politically, I'll say that I'm libertarian (I like my fiscal conservatism without a heaping helping of the morality police), so I'm neither right nor left, though probably from a non-American standpoint I'm still right of center. I'm not a huge conservationist, I make efforts but I'm lazy about being "green" and I don't like the guilt trips of certain psycho eco groups.

However, I do live rurally and one thing that's important to me because it directly affects my family is to support local farming. My uncle owns a farm and we get a lot of our meat and all of our eggs from him. We go to two different farmers' markets because, well, the food just tastes better, anyway, but also because it supports the local economy. And yes, it's "green" but that's a secondary benefit to me. (Sorry if that offends anyone.)

Whatever meat I can't get from my uncle (he has cattle, pigs, sheep and chickens), I get from an organic butcher near where I work. Seems snobby, but again, the meat is fresher and therefore tastes better.

As for veganism, I have no problems with it until the militant vegans march in and wag their fingers at everyone else for their horrible, fattening diets that turn the earth into a greenhouse and make the baby Jesus cry. But I feel that way about anyone who wears a silly label like "vegan" with such pride and arrogance. Making people feel like crap isn't going to win them over. If they want people to change, they should at least accept that not everyone wants to become full-time herbivores, and then suggest responsible diet options.

I also agree that tackling eco problems such as this are better met with finding workable solutions to responsible farming rather than just not eating meat anymore. One option is possible, the other will never happen. You can decide which is which.

@Tanith:

I don't understand why you apologize repeatedly. You and your family eat well because you have the appropriate resources near you. What's there to apologize? If anything, you should be proud because you know where your food is produced and you know how to choose it.

I agree that there are farms that are managed with the feet (IE: BAD, BAD, BAD), but they (even if they are large as frickin' hell) aren't the whole of them.

I had the displeasure of talking to a vegan the other day. I dunno if her rationalizations are the same as all the rest, I honestly doubt it, but when she confronted me (yes, the imbecile actually attacked me) over consuming meat, she threw at me the line of

"You don't care about your ecosystem. Global warming has been proven and it's being helped by you and those that keep supporting those industries. The problem must be unearthed down to its root."

To which I simply replied "You don't know about the processes and regulations here, do you? You're nothing but a chest beating apologist with no information inside your skull. Do me a favor and go visit the places I worked at."

And she went batshit insane on me with "You worked there. Of course you're going to cover their asses, you're expecting them to hire you again."

I got angry and muffled my impulse to lash at her. "Then you're no better than those bible crazies you hate so much. Do me a favor and get out of my sight."

We were in a crappy cafeteria waiting for our meals (a bunch of coworkers, me and that psycho). I was just going to eat a salad that last Monday, but since she angered me so much, I ordered an additional burrito (yes, I like burritos), that with my mood and her proximity tasted BADLY, but at least served to enrage her and as a way for me to vent that suppressed rage I was having.

Mmm. Burritos.

I'm a spineless American apologist? No, seriously, it's just something I'm used to from years of political/philosophical discussions on the internet. Or, well, I actually am fairly spineless... but anyway...

So you got accosted by an eco loon, huh? You handled the situation much more eloquently than I have in the past. Living and working around DC, well, you can imagine the kind of wackos that just seem to pour in and out of the area to beat their drums about whatever. They take that to the common folk enjoying lunch or just reading a book in the park, and not just holding up their silly signs on Capitol Hill. I've told more than one picketing moron that dared to bother my personal business to go fork themselves.

AND KEEP TO THE RIGHT ON THE METRO ESCALATORS IF YOU'RE JUST GOING TO STAND THERE! GAH!

I acctually am fairly used to people getting under my skin. I've been attacked by religious zealots (the most usual kind of attack), feminists (not many times, but enough to list), Right wingers (far, far right) and left wingers (ignorant idiots who think they're Che Guevara because they wear a shirt with his face stamped on it) and now herbibores!

When I was younger I was used to punching and running, but as I grow older, I'm forced to keep my head on.

Just a random commend i thought was good i found on youtube -

To most Christians, the Bible is like a software license. Nobody actually reads
it. They just scroll to the bottom and click "I agree."

You know, that's exactly it. You hit the nail in the head with a sledgehammer. Best description of the state of affairs ever.

I wouldn't go as far as to say "most" Christians don't read the Bible, but I would agree that there are quite a few who fit that description. Sadly, I know quite a few who do read the Bible and still don't seem to understand it. *sigh*

Hm, this thread has gone from "I only shag vegetarian women" to "I only shag wannabe Christian women." (The latter part being quite the paradox, of course. I suppose one could word it "I'm pretending to hold out for a wannabe Christian woman.")

Ah, well, you know how we are... We start in a topic, then somehow end in another. It's not so bad, really.

Conversations always change over time, its boring to stick to one topic for too long. Just talk with anyone and the topic could start and end with something wildly different.

I'm not complaining.

Overmodding in forums annoys me, anyway.

Not saying we have an overmodding problem. Quite the opposite really. It's just that we've had one or more fellow users that got riled up when someone derailed a topic like everyone seems to do here.

Actually, that's what I was getting at. This forum allows threads to go in a more natural "conversation" progression, and I don't care when forums do overmod (unlike this one). It's actually one of the reasons you all have seen me here more often lately. Well, that, and you don't have a certain member talking about PS women in bikinis every 12 seconds. That's a plus.
