Question on PSG 1 and 2

Postby Nate556 » Wed Sep 15, 2010 8:49 pm

I did some looking, and didn't see any posts on this.

So, these remakes were made, and then the translations were scrapped.. (I'm Captain Obvious today)

Now, my question is. What do you think of the odds of a fan translation ? I remember some of the translations from old NES games that were easily 10x better than the official translations that came later with the remakes. NeoDemiforce's translation of Earthbound 0, FF2... those were amazing. Alex W. Jackson's translation of FF3 was awesome.

Now. I imagine that ps2 code is probably a lot more complex than the NES's codes were. However, where there's a will, there's a way.

So, any thoughts on this ? Does anyone know of any fan groups trying to translate the roms of these PS2 games ? How possible is it ? (or how probable...) It'd be nice if someone took up the task and challenge of translating these games for everyone. Hell, that would make my year. That would make my decade!

Given the age and size of the fandom, I'd say the odds are pretty low. Technically, it'd be possible if just a single competent person decided to take the time and get it done, so it's not impossible, but... I wouldn't hold my breath.

Fantranslations are a mixed bunch. Some are excellent, others are literal and awkward. I imagine the biggest reason the NES era translations seem so good is that the official ones were godawful at the time (and, really, a good bit into the PSX era).

Not that I wouldn't take a literal and awkward translation of Gen 2 over no translation any day of the week...

There is a project, I seem to recall, to translate it into Portuguese (the Brazilian phandom is quite an active one!). If they succeed, translating it to English will be a piece of shortcake! =)

Usually, yes. However, these games were very small in size (PSG:1 was 70mb or so, PSG:2 was about twice that size going from memory) compared to other PS2 games. Plus, as budget titles, they didn't have the most revolutionary compression algorithms. So, with a little know-how, it's pretty easy to dump the scripts.

Now, to reassemble it post-translation would be a little more difficult...

Orakio Rob, who posts here and runs his own excellent site, has been working on translating both games to Portuguese and then to English. I showed some interest in doing a project as well, though that was frowned upon by Benoit (a moderator here). We'll see who does what though, if anything. The games are 5 and 7 years old respectively, so while interest may be there nothing tangible has come out in a decade nearly.

I may have frown at your project idea, PSP, but ultimately, I can't stop you. Moderator or not.

Well of course you can't. Though I did find it humorous to have you wag your finger at me from across the Atlantic, when I didn't even start the topic on this forum. Moreso when I actually spoke to Orakio Rob and he seemed enthusiastic about having more people work on the translations, since he's from the open source community.

In any case, while I love them, trying to translate the games from Japanese has been very far down on my list of priorities. And it appears that while Rob is pursuing the matter, he too has a life that takes precedence over the project. Maybe as time goes on we'll both be able to make progress, since it would be nice to see a patch out there for these titles.

Hate to say it, Benny, but I agree with Corey on this one.

I know that you don't like the cunt very much, but it's a bit much to tell PSP and other people what they can and cannot do with their fan projects.

I think Thoul is a total wanker, but you can't tell people that they're selling out to PSAlgo either.

My personal opinion of PSP and Fringes of Algo is irrelevant. I felt that it was an unnecessary duplication of efforts. That's all.

Just out of curiosity, if someone announces a project but has nothing tangible out there for a couple of years...how long do they have 'dibs' in that case? If you wanna get all technical, Conspiracy never officially announced a cessation of their efforts to translate PSG:1 (we just were able to figure it out for obvious reasons).

I mean, after speaking to Orakio Rob I'd rather help with his project than start my own since he reaffirmed that he still wants to do the English version, but to my knowledge he's only dumped the scripts and hasn't really begun an English translation at all (since it's secondary to his initial goal, a Portuguese translation) so it wouldn't be a duplication of efforts per se.

In any case, it's kind of a moot point. I'm a grown man and can do whatever the hell I want. ;p

I do find your passion amusing though, since you've been anti-remake ever since they were announced in 2002...while having never played them...

But when you're posting on ps cave, you practically become the moderator's rent boy for life. Didn't you check the small print on the Terms of Service? ;P

You can't do any fan project without him say so!

I hardly post here in any case, the place is usually dead. Why do you think I never posted here about my interest in a translation anyhow (though, that didn't stop Benoit from trying to dress me down on AIM about it)? ;p

That's because he misses you. <3

If you had to choose between "The Artist Formally Known As Khyron" on PSAlgo and Benny from PSCave, who would you choose, lover boy?

You don't have to play a game to dislike its idea. Just look at the Devil May Cry outrage. It's similar in that people don't like other people to mess with the existing fictional universe.
