Who of you has ever played PS1 with FM Synthetiser?

Postby xrick » Sun Jul 11, 2010 4:33 pm

I guess the title says it all...

I played it, and honestly, whoever says that the PSG Soundtrack is the one for PS1, I totally disagree, the FM one is the one.

Also, it may be because of the PSG soundtrack that many people my consider PSG:1's soundtrack a bad one...

I've played the game with the FM synth. While some people say they can't stand it because the PSG-only soundtrack is the soundtrack for them, I never understood that personally. It always felt incomplete to me even when I hadn't played the Japanese version. To me, it would be like watching a movie with only the luma signal and one but not both of the chromas on a component hookup.

Though, as a funny semi-related point, people in Europe will often say that games like PSIV sound wrong to them if not played at PAL speeds. So, I guess we just become attached to what we know. I like both, but to me, the FM version is the complete version.

And I agree, the PSG:1 OST does end up being less jarring if compared to the FM soundtrack from the original.

I have.

The three forms of the soundtrack have always been enjoyable for me.

I still haven't played the retranslation. One of these days I should fire it up.

Really? It was immediately apparent upon playing the game on my Mega Drive that the sound was slower than it should be. I had tried the game through emulation before that, but that was a couple years before and I didn't remember much from it, so I couldn't really compare.

I think I start my PSI adventure over again and play this retranslation version instead. :) Thanks for the idea.

Hm. They have translated Dark Falz to Dark Force. I've always assumed that Dark Falz was translated right. Although I call it as Dark Force anyway.

Well... Actually, another possible transliteration of ダーク・ファルス (Daaku Farusu) is... Dark Phallus... And no, I'm not even joking.

Back when I was studying Japanese, I asked my teacher, who had played the game when she was a young girl what she thought of the transliteration "Dark Falz". She said more or less this:

"Great. I like it a lot. If they had gone for the one I would call the strictest one, it would have sounded very bad."

Then I asked: "Bad? How bad?"

"Well... You know, like... dark... male... genitalia..."

I was drinking soda. Then the image of an enormous, angry and evil dark penis formed in my mind. A few seconds later, I squirted a portion of the soda inside my mouth through my nose as I tried to contain my laughter. I had to go for a mop.

Man, that lady had LOTS of patience for us. Nerves of steel too.

LOL LOL LOL Awesome one, man!!!
But really, I also think Dark Falz sounds better than Dark "Phallus" (pff) or Dark Force.

The japanese do really have a nice and "dark" sense of humor... :D

Well well. Dark dick.
Oh well. I guess we can safely call it Dark Force or Dark Falz. I think everyone knows both names.

I just patched my Japanese PSI ROM.
Very well done. Here's some screenshots (won't propably work on IE).

Yep, that's how PS1 should have always been...
And with the FM Synth as well...
