Importing games...

Postby Wing-0 » Sat May 08, 2010 12:10 am

PeaGuy asked me the other evening about importing games, but I bailed (sorry, man). I then got the question: How many of you have imported games and which?

Since I don't have the typical vices of alcohol, nicotine, strip clubs and prostitutes that people of my age are so keen to have in my area, I actually have had more chances to buy games for a few consoles.

Saturn:

Japanese:
Lunar: Silver Star Story (my first Japanese game ever. It died in an accident involving summer sunlight because my mother scattered my things around... Thanks, mother...)
Shining The Holy Ark (I have never finished that damn game...)
Sakura Taisen 2 (visual novel/dating sim/strategy. This was the game that REALLY started me in learning Japanese I consider the voice actresses for Sakura and Sumire my very first Japanse Language teachers because of that.)

Dreamcast:

Japanese:
Macross M3 (shooter. A barely passable by most standards, but since I didn't play many 3D shooters then, I still liked it. I still play it from time to time.)

European:
Shenmue 2 (no introductions needed)
Headhunter (action/stealth/beard advertisement)

Playstation 2:

Japanese:
Anubis: Zone of the Enders (Zone of the Enders 2)
Sakura Taisen 1 (complete remake of the Saturn original, except for a few movies)
Dragon Force (A Sega Ages budget remake/port/whatever of a cool game I never had the chance to play on the Saturn).
Phantasy Star Generations 1 (Remake of... PSI)
Phantasy Star Complete Collection (And with complete, I mean friggin' complete. It even comes with the US versions. This should have been released in the West)
Rumble Roses (Wrestling eroge/parody?)
Super Dimension Fortress Macross (Best shooter I have played on the PS2)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (MGS2 on steroids)
Melty Blood Act Cadenza (One of the best fighting games I have played)
Melty Blood Actress Again (The sequel to one of the best fighting games I have ever played, with the STUPIDEST non sequitour name ever)
Capcom VS SNK 2 (came with my Japanese PS2)
Gran Turismo 3 A Spec (came with my Japanese PS2, and I barely touched it)

PSP

Japanese:

Macross Ace Frontier (A compilation of most of the Macross material in a single shooting game)
Macross Ultimate Frontier (Sort of sequel-ish, but more like a HUGE expansion of the first in both material, gameplay and extras. One of my top favorite games ever)
Phantasy Star Portable 1 (I didn't know PSp was going to be released in my continent)
Phantasy Star Portable 2 (I don't see any intentions of releasing it in my continent)
Senjou no Valkyria 2 (Valkyria Chronicles 2, which SEEMS will get released someday... A much better game than I intiailly thought Hard as hell too)

I'm forgetting some games, but that's most of what I have hoarded. I still have them because I have this penchant of storing them in a different place, outside of view. Call me crazy.

What about you?

  • Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (GameCube): I only had a passing interest in this one, and read that it had the same fake 60Hz mode as Tales of Symphonia. But then I saw the US version for really cheap (10 bucks!) in the store, so I didn't hesitate to get it.
  • Baten Kaitos Origins (GameCube): Excellent prequel to the previous Baten Kaitos game that was never released in Europe.
  • Dragon Force (Saturn): Present from PeaGuy.
  • Final Fantasy Legend II (Game Boy): I could have gotten the EU version as well, but I ended up winning a US version on eBay.
  • Ikaruga (Dreamcast): The Dreamcast version only got released in Japan. I wanted the Dreamcast version.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures: Received from a friend because he had the game twice.
  • Lufia and the Fortress of Doom (Super NES): I own this one to play it legally on an emulator.
  • Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (Super NES): I own this one to play it legally on an emulator.
  • Lufia: The Legend Returns (Game Boy Color): Never got released in Europe, except in Austria in German or something. Weird.
  • Lunar Legend (Game Boy Advance): Bought from a friend.
  • Mega Man X (Super NES): I own this one to play it legally on an emulator.
  • Mega Man X4 (Saturn): The Saturn version never got released in Europe.
  • Phantasy Star Collection (Game Boy Advance): Received from a friend because it's a bad collection and I'm a phan.
  • Princess Maker 2 (Saturn): I wanted to own an original next to the English PC version that floats around on the web.
  • Sonic Adventure 2 10th Anniversary Edition (Dreamcast): I didn't have the game yet, and then a friend who worked at a store presented it to me with a cheap price + DC-X, so I bought it.
  • Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (DS): Bought from a friend.
  • Tales of Symphonia (GameCube): This was released in Europe, but with a fake 60Hz mode (optimised 50Hz my ass). Damn you, Namco. Was it really that hard to add PAL60 support considering that you had to convert to PAL anyway, and NTSC is already 60Hz?

I don't consider myself a regular importer, but it looks like I've got more than I thought. There are more games I'm willing to import soon, because of the lack of an EU release.
Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

No. As in buying a game from a region not your own. In my case, Japan and Europe.
