PS II Techs: Difference between Deban-Sashu?

Postby Matti_Dethwish » Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:53 pm

I just popped in my old PSII cart and loaded a save older than Greek Mythology, and I noticed that Amy had those two techniques which apparently have the same function.

In the fourth installment, Sashu is gone. Makes me wonder.

So what I'm asking, even though it feels like a complete rookie question coming from someone who's spent his entire life playing these games, what is the technical difference between the two? Do they work for different types of attacks?

Not really an urgent question, but at least a slightly interesting one.

Maybe I'm stupid, but... What two techniques?

Deban is for defense, but Sashu... Uh... Crap, don't remember... Let me see if I can find the answer in the game itself...

Edit: I went to take a look at the game. Amy doesn't have Sashu yet... Then I went to check the manual but the technique list uses the word Shuhiryoku.
The first kanji is for protection, the second (hi or bi, the image is blurry) I can't quite read and the third is for power.

So I'm guessing it's some sort of defensive technique for using on allies. I really can't recognize the second kanji. It's either a more complicated form of a kanji I didn't practice or something.

Maybe someone else knows? Sorry, can't take captures out of my SDTV, unless you can put up with a blurry as hell image.

Any chance the kanji you want is 秘? 守秘力

Hope this displays here.

Edit: It's 守備 and not 守秘. I feel ashamed for not noticing that sooner. 守秘力 isn't an ability that'd be in a videogame since it literally means "power to protect confidentiality."

Shu,*Sashu-- Increases your defensive power; costs 3,8 TP
*Deban-- Creates a barrier around your party; costs 4 TP

I'm GUESSING Deban in PS2 increases DEF a bit lower than Sashu, or maybe has magical defense properties. After I do what I'm doing I do some research... Sorry, I rarely look at the actual topic, just the fact it's a topic I hadn't read from the gold sign.

I think it's the one in your edit... But I just shut down the PS2 a little while ago to check, heheh.

Somehow, the kanji seemed more complicated. You think it was a not simplified version?

I will take a picture tomorrow, just please... Bear with me. I play in a SDTV, and you know how wonderful photographies from a digital camera look when taken straight from a CRT.

I'm sad... PSU ended today and I barely got to enjoy it... But the little time I played with it, DAMN... it was wonderful fun.

AFAIK Sashu increases defence stat and Deban halves the damage dealt. I cannot remember if it halves only tech attacks or physical ones or prehaps both...

Both are defensive then?

Kinda explains why Sashu wasn't reused in IV.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but techniques in PSII aren't cumulative, right? Meaning, if you decided to cast deban more than once during a battle, it won't be more effective than the first time you cast it. However, since there are two defense techs in PSII, in boss battles and other tough battles, I like to have one member use the snow crown (effectively deban) and Amy use sashu, or if you don't have the snow crown yet, have Amy cast each tech in different rounds. It makes a huge difference, especially because I'm not into level grinding that much and find it's unnecessary if you plan your battles more strategically.

Anyway, so the two techs are a bit redundant, but can be used together for an impressive defense power increase.

Slightly off topic but related: Vol and Savol become the biggest bargain techniques in the game if you level up Hugh enough. And after I declared I don't like level grinding, haha! Anyway, Hugh "misses" a lot until about level 36 or so, then the odds are more in his favor when using them. They work on anything that's not mechanical, including all the mystical specters and what-not on Dezo. I've never tried Vol against Dark Force, though.

I've also found that Fiends occasionally survive Megid. Not by much, but still. Wow.
