why couldn't Nei come back ?

Postby Nate556 » Fri Jun 05, 2009 9:31 am

I was just thinking about this. Why couldn't they have cloned Nei like before ?
And I was thinking it had to do with Neifirst. Maybe because Neifirst has to be alive for Nei to be alive ? Since Nei was an off-shoot of Neifirst ?
I'm sure you guys have kicked this topic around for 2 decades.

its just one of those things :?

its kinda like why didnt you fight Darum?
insted you decide to go to Shure, then Nido, just to bring Tiem to the North Bridge and watch her get killed :?

why didnt we clone Tiem?

same thing in PSI...
we have a spaceship, why does Myau need to fly to the Air Castle?!?

For an infinite amount of reasons you cannot revive Nei.

However, all else aside, it's just how the game was written. Psycology failes in the face of hard facts.

Number one reason why Nei couldn't be brought back to life in PSII: Because most video game companies and fans are masochists. I never understood why they always decide to kill main and secondary characters. Most of the time, it's absolutely stupid and pointless. Sega decided to use a DBZ "Piccolo and Kami" idea for Nei and Nei First. Only problem is, unlike in DBZ, Nei and Nei first are not the same person like Piccolo and Kami (only spilt apart). They're clones. If some guy would clone me and I would get killed, my clone would still be alive so it made no sense why Nei died nor that she couldn't be cloned back to life.

I had hoped that this stupid trend of character deaths would stop in the future, but it only seems to be getting worse. I could go on forever with tons of examples from numerous games, but I won't since most people dislike spoilers. How strange, it always usally turns out to be my favorite characters that bite the dust. Not only in games, but in movies too. Heck, even in real life. David Carradine just died recently and he was one of my favorite actors. Cursed luck that I have... At least this will give me a good opportunity to make an awesome manga remake of Breath of Fire 1 and others. Oh yeah! But that's off topic though... :)

I figured the reason you needed Myau to fly you to that castle was for some magical reason. Like, you couldn't even see it without the magic prism, so maybe you need to use a magic means of getting there ?
I think some character deaths are completely neccessary. Like Joseph in Final Fantasy 2.
I also figured the reason Tiem and Darum couldn't be cloned... is because all that was left were little bits.
Lufia and Breath of Fire were some of the first RPG's I ever played. Breath of Fire really touched me when you get the time Key, that one chick and that guy who were in love, when you beat her, and the castle disappeared, then you go back and see them both playing together as kids... that really struck a cord inside.
I also figured out why they couldn't bring Aeris back in FF7. She had to die for Holy to work. Her exact words were, "When a Soul returns to the planet with a prayer for Holy in their heart.." The only way a soul coul return to the planet was by dying...

It's hard to see these as spoilers, 'cause the games are so old, but I can understand why, I only fairly recently got into the Phantasy Star games. I played Phantasy Star 2 when I was younger... but all I did then was run around with Rolf, who I named Hero(I thought it was clever), Nei and Rudo. I'd just gotten Tiem when the game had to go back. Personally, spoilers don't bug me, it doesn't take away from the impact of the events in the games when I play them, but I guess it's fair to show the respect to other people who don't see it my way.
EDIT: I didn't realize I didn't address this before, but I meant to. I think the reason Rolf doesn't fight Darum in the tunnel is because he knows Darum would kill him and Nei pretty easily. He'd encountered Darum before and he tried to kill Nei, so I think Rolf avoids the fight because he knows Darum could kick his butt. In most instances Experience > Youth. A fight with Darum at that point would probably be worse than fighting the Blasters in Nido. Guessing in terms of strength, Darum would probably be about level 30, or 20, while Rolf and Nei, or even Rudo if you want to include him are roughly level 7 or 8. Well... Nei would be higher 'cause her levels roll by super fast, but that doesn't change my point.

I don't agree...

The game was written like that. I doubt it passed the minds of the programmers. For cloning Teim and Darum, you wouldn't need big pieces of their bodies. A clone would require just DNA...

And if I was Rolf, and my fighting skills sucked in front of Darum's, I'd much rather bring the WHOLE place down on him and walk over the rubble covering his squashed body... Unethical, but effective... I mean... The world was getting screwed! I couldn't worry for the life of a criminal... Sorry about Teim too... But eh... applying my moral views on a game is the same as spitting upwards and expecting it to reach a cloud.

No one got it right. Shame on you all. Here's what the Clone Clown says in Japanese PSII:
Clone Clown wrote:Welcome to the Clone lab. Who do you wish to revive? Do you want Nei to be revived? Well let me see... well... looks like all non-human parts are completely destroyed... I'm sorry but it seems to be impossible to bring her back. Perhaps burying her in a peaceful place, and letting her rest in peace is better. I'm sorry about this...

It's all inforced by the plot and etc., but the plot was intended to be like that. You can't ressurrect Nero either. But it's FUNDAMENTALLY IMPORTANT that Alis can't revive him, otherwise she would never have taken the task to avenge him and defeat Lassic. The same goes for Rolf - PSII is about the deconstruction of Rolf's life, and if Nei could be saved and everything would be kept as cute and pinky as before, it would be so out of place. Believe me, you would have HATED it :^P

my favorite part of the game was her death (as inhuman as that can sound). the plot twist had so much power and emotion that it made me more interested in the characters and the adventure.

Well, I expected that as a longtime member of the community you'd know, even if only from the discussions on this subject.

And see how weird it is...

This is the VERY first time I have this topic of dead characters go into the Nei direction...

Maybe because most of us were used to the idea that Nei dies and rots we didn't really go into this little portion of the comparison... But hey... Maybe the topic did surface and we can blame my lack of attention... =P

That still doesn't explain why Rolf couldn't use a Moon Dew on her. I remember having one and not using it during the Nei First fight. Heck, Amy could have also used Rever on her... Again, just stupid, pointless drama...

No, I would have loved it. I hate seeing great characters dying. :?

We could have gone into the death drama better, but the times reviving Nei and her ultimate death... Always seemed like 2+3=9 to me... Out of place...

Nei's death is not pointless drama. Don't you dare think of it that way! Nei sacrificed herself for the people of Motavia, and it allowed Rolf to develop. It was an important plot point.
