Phantasy Star Generation 1! For PS2

Postby oliquidrusho » Fri May 14, 2004 9:37 am

Ok. I just did a major impulse buy. I got myself PS Generation 1 for PS2. Yet, two problems, its an import of course. and yet another question, I don't understand Japanese in the slightest.
The thing is, I love Phantasy Star. I had to get it.
So my questions.
1) I have an American Playstation 2 - will it work with the Import game? I have gameshark and stuff - yet i've never tested it on imports to find out. Anyone got answers to this?
2) I'll be searching anyway, but anyone know if there's a translation site out there for the game? In other words, a text transcript in english? If you know of a site or something, it would be great if you could supply me a link. Thanks for reading!!

Those links aren't working for me... :(
I'll just post what I did to play the Japanese game on my US Playstation 2:
Researching the possible ways to "mod" my PS2, I found that they are few and quite complicated. Mod Chips are way too expensive and complicated. Plus, the possibility of screwing it up is pretty good, and your PS2 is now broken, the warranty is voided and so on.
The Swap Magic discs are the way to go. You get two discs (one for CD-ROM games and one for DVD-ROM games) which act as boot discs. You power on your PS2 with the disc in the drive and when the screen prompts you, you take the Swap Disc out and put whatever game you want to play in and off you go. The only catch is that you need to be able to open the cd tray of your PS2 without resetting the system. The two ways you can do this are: the Slide Card, and the Flip Top Lid.
The Slide Card requires you to pop off the front cover of the cd/dvd tray on your PS2. To open the tray while the machine is on, you take this plastic card and insert it under the left side of the tray, slide it to the right and then back to the left. The tray will pop open, you swap the discs, and then you have to repeat the slide card process in order to close the tray. It looked pretty tricky from the pictures and instructions I saw on the net.
The Flip Top Lid (the one that I went with) is WAAAY easy. The only complicated part is installing it (especially when mine arrived, it didn't come with any instructions). You are basically replacing the top cover of your PS2 with a new one that allows access to the cd/dvd drive via a flip top lid. You also have to pop the memory card slot covers and the reset and eject button assembly off your old top cover and put them in your new one, but it's really easy. Also, you have to remove the top cover of the cd/dvd drive itself (about 8 little screws). Once it's off, if you look at the underside, you'll see this little white, free moving disc of plastic. Take that out and install it in the underside of your Flip Top Lid. I bout the lid and the swap discs together for $33 shipped (which was only a little more than the Slide Card).
http://www.all4console.com/ps2_reference17.htm
I have no info on a translation of the game, but so far I've managed to get pretty far (I have the luveno, the landrover and hovercraft and am looking for the Laconian Sword) without being able to read Japanese at all. It's pretty similar to the original, with a few exceptions (like that stupid roadpass!!!) so if you know the original and you're as determined as I was, you shouldn't have too much trouble.
Sorry if this is a tad long or whatever.

What the hell is it with these people?
Importing a game when it got tons of Japanese in it that you can't read? While your PS2 can't read it either?
All this idiocy, and the game is already sheduled for a US release...

Haha, yeah calm down. Why are you complaining? In just another thread you told that guy who was new to phantasy star to buy the originals at all costs despite easily obtainable emulators. Hes buying Phantasy star, whats the prob?

Thats right BENOIT! :)
If its easy to classify me as "idiot" for buying it, thats ok. Like I said, it was an impulse buy. When I do things like that I say, "crap, whats wrong with me?" But then again, when you see the game Phantasy Star Generation 1 for about 8 bucks on E-Bay (US Dollars too), you start to say, "aww what the heck". Or at least I did.
-Reason why it was somewhat idiotic to just buy the game (Yes I actually somewhat agree with Benoit)
I realized AFTER I bought the dang thing that I didn't have any import convertor - so Now in the end I'm paying a little more than I expected.
But do I regret payin 8 bucks (13 total if I include S&H) for this game? No, but yeah it was definetly idiotic. Impulse buy. What can I say? ;)
By the way, why you choose the name benoit?

Oh by the way, thanks for the info there on the imports zoothe.
Ironically I got the slide card thing RIGHT before I signed on here. The flip top sounds ok, but I don't mind doing the slide thing. anyway the thing is, my PS2 is kinda weird. Some games only work when I stand up my PS2 vertically and some games work when the PS2 is horizontal. Weird. I figure the flip top could still be fine and stuff, just =) yeah. Thanks.
And in response to your latter answer, I searched far and wide too for translations. I'm sure in due time it'll show, but yeah. I don't think I'll be buying a US Version now. Anyway out of curiosity, I heard the game has more background story - I realize you don't understand Japanese, but was there anything that seemed to make that true?

Haha, yeah calm down. Why are you complaining? In just another thread you told that guy who was new to phantasy star to buy the originals at all costs despite easily obtainable emulators. Hes buying Phantasy star, whats the prob?

I think I stated quite clearly what the problem is. Buying a game you can't understand is not a smart move. Especially if you know it's going to be translated. And then not knowing how to play the game... :/

By the way, why you choose the name benoit?

Because it's my first name in real life. Actually, my real name is Benoît, with a ^ on the i. But computer tend not to like that character and replace it with nonsense. Thus Benoit.
So why my first name? Having a nick which would be my other name doesn't feel right for me. I don't want to be known under another name. Yes, it might sound silly, but that's how I am. It doesn't feel comfortable.
And yeah, if it was for just 8 bucks, I can somewhat understand you.

Nah, don't think its silly at all. I'm actually the opposite. I dont' feel comfortable putting my name, so I put some weird nick. That could be seen as silly to some. So its all good.
And yeah 8 bucks was the kicker for me. =) While I searched on ebay I also saw PSO figurines. I don't know why, but I contemplated them - but it was 29.99. Now unless I collect, thats not worth it to me.

Argue and lable people as idiots, that is. That doesn't surprise me. Grow the hell up and stop worrying about what other people do.

I don't think I'll be buying a US Version now. Anyway out of curiosity, I heard the game has more background story - I realize you don't understand Japanese, but was there anything that seemed to make that true?

Now, not buying the US version because you already own the Japanese verion (which you can't understand) I do not agree with. You need to buy the US version so that sales go up and there's a reason to do this kind of thing in the furture. As for your question: I can't be 100% sure, but there does seem to be a lot more dialogue. But according to Benoit-The-All-Knowing, it's all a bunch of crap. I'm sure he's right on the money, too.

[Edit by zoothe on [TIME]1084569129[/TIME]]

To be honest, I don't have enough money to buy a game that I'll be purchasing later and some additional hardware so that I can play it...a game which I can't even understand! So, to me, it doesn't make much sense.
But this is just my opinion. I'm a logical person...I don't do something a certain way if an efficient and better way can be found. I'm patient, to boot, so waiting isn't a factor. Lastly, I don't even have a PS2.
Hey, and Benoit? How do you pronounce your name? I feel like total moron saying "ben-oyt" and I'm not sure if it's pronounced as "ben-wah" (with the "wah" having the same sound as the word "on").

You're just pissed because you know I'm right. :p

Okay, oh wise one, give me a concrete release date in the United States for PSG1. That seems to be a major (ignorant) basis of your arguements, so...a date? You're so certain it's coming, you must know something we don't...
-Corey

You're just pissed because you know I'm right.

That's your only response because you know you're wrong. oliquidrusho came on here asking for help and what do you do? You come on here and call him (and me) an idiot. In doing so, you also did something you consistently slam other posters for and that's for starting a topic on a thread when it's already been discussed on some other thread. And so you keep proving my point that all you do is hunt around looking for arguments to start. No wonder you have so many posts. By the way, didn't I read on some other thread that you haven't even played the remake? Nice slamming a game you've never played.

To be honest, I don't have enough money to buy a game that I'll be purchasing later and some additional hardware so that I can play it...a game which I can't even understand! So, to me, it doesn't make much sense.

Yet I do have the money (and the required PS2). It doesn't make me an illogical person. I would have bought it regardless if just for my collection. Besides, at this point a US or EU release is far from a sure thing. Don't hate.

Relax, Zoothe. I'm not hating you...I just said that I don't thave enough money to do something like that. I was just stating my opinion. Plus, you had to go to all that extra trouble just so you could play a game that you can't understand...replacing your PS2's outer casing and such. I'm just saying that I wouldn't do it.
