PS2 Solo run troubles. *UPDATE - Completed!*

Postby Larkin » Fri Dec 14, 2007 1:35 pm

Hi, this is my first post but i've sorta been lurking about for a while.

I've played all the Phantasy Stars to death, but none more than PS2. I got it back when I was a wee lad and it took me literally years to complete. (Card tower in Piata seriously did take me about 2 years to notice when I was about 5 years old.)

Anyway, I was about to have another go through the game, and felt like a change. And decided i'd do a solo run through the game. Basically this involved killing Nei at the earliest opportunity and not recruiting anybody else into the party, only using Rolf from start to finish. Only exceptions to the rule were using a Moondew on Nei just before the Climatrol boss as otherwise, I wouldn't be able to continue.

I was expecting it to be very difficult, but was actually surprised to find it easier (!) in many respects to a normal run!

The first thing I noticed, was attacks that can hit the whole group (Such as Blaster special or the lasers coming off the tree guys) Tend to have very low accuracy on a single character. Fights against Momo/sono/attmechs go very smoothly, often coming out with no damage taken even after 5 rounds of combat.

Secondly, only having to gear up one character meant you were often, if not always very well equipped. Two ceramic knifes were very easy to acquire before Nido tower and to my relief, I encountered no Blasters.

Biosystems were a pain, but due to gaining exp at 4x the usual rate, Rolf was hard enough to make it through. Gaining the Maruera Leaves took me 2 nights to achieve, but in the end wasn't anything too difficult.

I should note by this point I'm playing it on the Genesis, so abuse of save states and hacks are a no-no (How it should be!).

Visiphone also isn't available to me, because as far as I know Shir needs to be level 10 to steal it and no character except Rolf has recieved any experience.

Something usefull inside Climatrol, Blastoids. Same graphic as a Pulser or Blaster but they're blue and green. Hit very low, only 2-4 and have a chance to make a copy of themselves just like slugmess do, if there's a free adjacecent spot. The clone has the same HP as the one it came off of. So basically, if you kill all except one, and get it to within 1 hit of dying. Defend until it duplicates, maybe even let it duplicate further onto its other side. Then proceed to 1 hit kill 2 of them. Rinse and repeat as much as neccesary, recieving full Exp and Meseta from every clone. About 10 minutes of this turns into something like 18,000 experience points. VERY handy when at Climatrol Level. Anyway, carrying on!

The battle against NeiFirst was very enjoyable. It wasn't overly difficult, but at the same time, did take a few attempts. And after having such a hard time of it when I was smaller, it felt like an accomplishment getting that far on a solo run (Which I had feelings may have been one of the harder moments of the game.)

The dams started giving me trouble. The robots start to hit hard, and many of them have insane defence. Although after playing around and dying for a while (3 Firgammas' were a death wish on the solo run, the 2 Kilgamma encounters weren't fun either. Infact...f*ck the Gammas.)

Then came a gamechanging discovery to me (Turns out pretty much everyone apart from me noticed it though!). 3 items, Crescegear (or Truthslvs/ Aegis) The Storm Gear and the Snow Crown.

They cast GiRes, GiZan (A special version hitting ALL onscreen enemies, not just a group) and Deban in that order. Making the game pretty much impossible to die in, all the way into dezo and through the towers collecting the Nei items. Taking less than half damage, and being able to heal 60 hp for free kept me outhealing...well everything to be honest. Even an encounter of 2 archdragons do less than 60 damage per turn after abuse of the Snowcrown.

Anyway! Now onto my problem. As you may of guessed...Darkforce has me pumped. I'm actually starting to doubt as to whether its going to be possible at all. Im pretty confident I can take Motherbrain easily, but its the fact he turns Rolf evil I cant keep up any healing due to no other party members being there.

Sorry to dribbling on for wayyyyy too long, but thought i'd add a bit of history to it :)

Basically, Im boned. Im currently level 40, and if it's just a case of getting insane levels, I can do it. I was worried Megido wouldn't function correctly due to no party members being alive to drain HP from. But it still hits as high as it ever did, and costs no HP from anybody. So I can get in an encounter on Noah, use megido for a 1 turn win. Repeat. Use Neisword for free healing and Tp restoration. Back in, rinse, repeat. And with Rolf alone, i've been getting 19,000+ exp per encounter.

But If anybody could suggest any reliable tactics, usefull items or basically anythign I havent' thought of for killing Dark Force with only 1 party member, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, Jamie.

Edit: Sorry, I also shoulda checked using the search function incase all of this has been covered before. I found a really old post concerning a solo run, but couldn't find usefull info in it.

2nd Edit: Oh dear. I was playing through this by myself, no maps or outside guides. And for the very first time i've just heard of how the randomness of levelups can leave you overpowered...or severly gimped! I have no idea if my Rolf is so weak, I should just start again or if he's going to manage the fight!

For the record, he's level 40

Stats are :
Hp: 309/309
Tp 155/155
Str: 283
Mental: 219
Agi: 171 (Not helping me at all, DF manages to out run be about 70% of turns)
Luck: 217
Dex: 232
Attack: 360
Defense: 353

I seriously hope he's not totally screwed haha, but as I said. Im a little sheltered PS2 child and as of yet have done this totally independant of guides. Wish i'd known about this earlier so I could save before level ups and manipulate good ones! Ach well.

I think you have been restarting if you got bad levelups..

That Rolf seems very blessed with TP stat. Seriously..

I've never got him even close to that amount of TP.

I did, and I haven't been restarting either. Seriously, Khyron, just admit you have really bad luck. :)

As for the topic, congratulations on getting that far! Yes, Dark Force is tough. I wonder if three Megids wouldn't take him out, though. It would at least shorten the fight considerably.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies :)

That had been a serious consideration when I was thinking up D-Force strats. The easy experience would mean maybe a day or 2 training and I could just unleash 4 consecutive Megids. I really don't know if I have the patience to level up to 220 tp though!

Another annoying thing is the immense randomness of the enemies. There's absolutely no pattern or structure as far as I can tell when it comes to the AI of the monsters. Orangahs will spam Res on turn one before any damage is taken. Sometimes Darkforce likes to use his lightning breath move 4 times in a row right from the off. Other times, he likes to disable Rolf and pretty much decimate my fight. Infact, the main factor of the NeiFirst fight is luck, as far as I found. Not having the Snowcrown made things tricky, so I substituted my 2 laser knifes for a sword, making the most of the extra defense. Then Simply hoped she used more of the multi-target spells with horrible accuracy as opposed to cutting me down with her sword. A few goes later, she did. Which translates as about 5 or 6 hours, but I know Climatrol almost off by heart after so many consecutive runs of it!

Anyway! Im really bad at keeping a track of thought going, sorry.

The random nature of the fights coupled with the fact i'm determined to do it on Genesis is making it rather frustrating! MINUS The Visiphone of all things due to Shirs Shitty level!

Im seriously considering either breaking my oath of not levelling anybody, simply to get a visiphone or trying this again on the Psp version to abuse savestates.

For now however, i'll gain the TP for a third Megid, and let you know how it goes.

At least after all of this, Motherbrain Should be a breeze.

Again, thanks for the replies. :D

And to think, People say they couldn't do this without the Game Genie.

How much TP does Rolf gain per level? You're only 10 TP away from Megid #3.

I'm not sure exactly how much he gains per level, I think it may be random. I've gained 2 levels since my first post and he's currently at 158 Tp.

I'm close to 43, and won't stop tonight until I have enough for 3 Megids.

If I fail after this, my next attempt will probably be close to level 50 as walking from Aukba to the crevasse, through to Lutz' Palace then onwards through Noah is becoming EXTREMELY tiresome!

I may have to start using 'A' spamming to get near DarkForce with a full supply of Trimate, although to be honest healing isn't the highest priority in the single player fight. It's basically hoping that he uses his Lightning attack as opposed to making Rolf go evil, which almost eliminates any chance of healing (Due to the Neisword sitting on its arse till turn 5 before deciding to shed a little light on the problem.)

I also think I have terrible luck! My closest attempt (I think anyway, no idea how much damage im doing!) was when Darkforce used his Evil ability, and Rolf reacted by losing the motive to fight. He still attacked the next turn however, and NeiSword helped him out turn after that. Sadly later on, he started theiving backpacks and it all went to shit!

Whenever I get an absolutely disastrous effect such as, crushed by despair, backpack thievery or trying to run away the sword sits idly by. However in a less serious situation when I lost the motive to fight, but still managed to attack...the sword suddenly jumps to help straight away.

Gah!

I'll keep soldiering away.

Thanks, Jamie.:)

Edit: I think I may have just encountered one of those power up levels! I managed to get level 43, and 161 TP.

I was then battling away for 44, hoping that by some miracle Rolf would get to 165 Tp, although an increase of 4 looked unlikely seeing as he'd increased only 6 in the previous 3 levels.

Got Level 44, his Tp jumped to 168 which took me by surprise. I'm ready to stock up, and try to 3x Megid Darkforce and see how it goes! I'll keep you updated.

It's done!

Darkforce is down :) And i'll shortly dispatch of Motherbrain. Still took about 10 rounds of combat and 3 trimates AFTER the 3 megids but at my hp and defense levels Darky was only hitting for around 40 out of my 335 per turn and I managed to somehow avoid getting hit by his Evil-eyes!

He managed to hit me twice with the evil ability. The first time, stopping any Tech use, but my TP was already down to 2 after the 3 megids and as such, wasnt a problem. Next he lowered my agility, which actually was a problem! I hadn't realised he done this, but once your agility is lowered he starts the turn by using his Lightning breath, then Rolf attacks, then he uses his breath again all in the one turn. This was still easily outhealed though. Anyway! I took some absolutely terrible pictures with my shitty little phone camera but hope it can show the levels and gear which made this possible.

Rolfs Named Lark by the way, after myself:)

Bare with me while I fiddle around with this image hosting shit, i'm not very tech savvy haha.

The beginning of the end!

Motherbrain should be a walk in the park after that. The only problem in that fight was the fact that the character could be made evil and basically stopped acting in the fight. If Motherbrain is just a slugfest at each other like I remember it, then fingers crossed that the run will be done tonight.

Cheers, Jamie.

I don't know what the double-posting policy is, but apologies for the spam!

MotherBrain Down :)

She can take much more of a beating than I thought. After using 3 Megids she took a HELL of a lot of melee attacks. Dissapointing thing was, after using the Snow Crown, her single attack did a mere 18 damage and her Nova done anywhere from 30-45. Meaning that when things looked rough, I could select the Crescegear then leave him to it until he got back to full hp, then just whittle away at her again.

But anyway, that's a wrap! I know it's probably been done about 100 times before, but it's a first for me haha! No hacks, No Game-Genie or anything. Everybody at level 1 apart from Rolf. No Visiphone (Leading to me almost tearing my hair out at parts.) Basically a Genesis and Phantasy Star II.

here's some MotherBrain pics, didn't bother with stats and gear as it's exactly the same as the D-Force pictures.

Image

The Acid-trip begins! (Need to try this fight with some Psychaedelic tunes!)

Image

MotherBrain has left the building.

Image

Rolf goes on his lonesome to kick some earthmen ass!

Image

Haha, so i'm done wasting all this space! If anybody else fancy's a go at it, it really put the spark back into the game for me! I really don't think a run like this would be possible without the Megids. They CONSIDERABLY reduce the fight time against DarkForce which is mainly trying to take him down before he decimates you using his Evil special. DarkForce aside, I actually think Rudo would make the best Solo character as the Snow Crown, Crescegear combo would work great with his immense Hp, armour and multi-enemy hitting weapons.

Anyhoooooooo!

Cheers! :) Jamie.

Awesome. Up yours, Dark Force!

You know, I actually don't know of anyone who achieved this without 'cheating'. :)

Well done!

*looks at the last pic*
Whoa... so Lutz doesn't even teleport-in any of the characters you never went home to bother meeting, either? XD
Or am I confused, and Lutz doesn't send them over until after you talk to the Earthmen Leader?
In which case it'd also be hilarious, he'd just teleport random people over to Rolf's side he never even met before in his entire life. XD
Strong or weak, all that matters to me is whether or not you're flammable.

That part was actually quite strange. I didn't take a picture of it, but if it's not what usually happens, i'll load up the game and beat Motherbrain to get one.

Basically, when Lutz teleports the rest of the party (Which at this point I haven't met :S) There was a space behind Rolf, then Rudo. Nobody else. The others may have been hidden by the text box onscreen, but it was only Rolf and Rudo standing there.

Then the others appeared as usual during the cutscene. Even though Rolf has no idea who they are! haha.

What about the Gr Sleeves?

Postby mikelp27 » Thu Dec 27, 2007 8:01 am

Larkin, did you find out what the gr sleeves do? They perform a technique from Hugh's arsenal. It ONLY works on bosses. But the thing is, it never said what it does! What does it do? This has bothered me ever since I first played the game. They have always been a mystery. I was going to suggest you use it against Dark Force, but it looks like you finished him off already.
Good solo run man. I used to think I was the only person to ever try that, I never finished though, so you're one up on me!

Hey :)

I tested it out there cause I store all the weapons and armours that only sell for like 200 Meseta in the room at the Paseo Tower.

They cast SHINB when used, one of Hughs really shitty techs that can sometimes make Biomonsters run away. Misses like crazy aswell, usually better just pummeling whatever that target was!

Cheers, Jamie.

And Shir can stole those items too. Quite useless item.

Long time no speak!

Been a couple of years since I've been here, hope everyone's doing good.

After a longggggg break from the game I'm going to attempt another Solo PS2 run. Basically any Character other than Eusis would be a nightmare, and he wasn't a cake walk himself.

Nothing in the game is a worry apart from Dark Force, anything else can be tanked out with Snow Crown and any Gires Item.

I found DF pretty difficult after using 3 Megids, i'm almost sure any other character would take a beating due to no support after losing their will to him.

Any suggestions on what character would like to be seen most?

The Pro's with Rudo is I can grab him very near the start, anybody else (Barring Nei who doesnt get to progress past the halfway point) would miss a good few dungeons and needed experience before NeiFirst.

I've heard there are Rom Hacks allowing all characters from the start, but this will be a console run done the old fashioned way with saves and resets.

Maybe an arguement for Shir and Visiphone?
