Complaining? Why?

Postby zoothe » Mon Apr 05, 2004 3:05 am

Okay so I'm new to the PSCave, but I am far from new to the Phantasy Star series. I got the first game back in '88 and every game since. I can't believe these people being so critical of the remake. What is it hurting?! It's not like the original game will now cease to exist. I, for one, am very optimistic about the remake. Even if there are changes, the music is different, or whatever, it will be fun to play a classic game with enough differences to make playing throught it worthwhile. I mean, if the remake was identical in every way, it'd seem kind of pointless, right? I think there are some expecting too much from this "budget" series of classic remake. I just don't understand why someone would not be excited about any remake at all. (be glad they didn't try to go crazy and make the whole thing online or in 3-d.)

I don't agree. It's not the music or such things.
It seems that the gameplay has been completely changed.
I'd rather a 3D game with free roaming as the first game has, than a game where you only have to talk to people...none has talked well of the gameplay till now.
The only surpassed aspect of PS1 is the graphics...the game itself is still a champion in RPG panorama.
A 3D PS1 or an Algolian MMORPG...that would be great, IMHO.
Anyway, we should only wait...at least those who own a PS2 (not me).

All I can say is: you don't understand. They ruined the entire Phantasy Star aspect of the game.

I am excited about the remakes, yes. But still I´m a critic, because I love the PS series more than any other game series, and as such, I have to point out what is bad about it, so it could be improved.
I listened to the musics. The original themes are still there, but... the instruments and rythim just don´t fit the situations. It´s like the music department never saw the game before and doesn´t know what the tunes trully represent.
I hear a lot about the linearity. PS1 was great because it wasn´t necessarily linear. You had a few key events that were needed to keep the game in a certain sequence, so you couldn´t just climb Baya Malay with Alis in level 1, but still, after these key events you could choose what to do, given a wide range of possibilities in every stage of the game. Apparently, this disapeared in the remake, which makes it look like one of those games where the only decisions you can make is what weapons you will purchase in the city you are forced to visit at that moment.
I like the cinematic scenes, the characters design (except Myau, who lost fluffyness), the new graphics and how the battle looks.
I don´t think PS1 remake will be an excelent game because it has new graphics, or just because it is PS. They are making it for Playstation 2, a system with much (MUCH!) more capacity than what they are using on that game.

I mean, if the remake was identical in every way, it'd seem kind of pointless, right? They could make more art slides for events, (but not cut scenes, I mean the art slides that you see when Nei dies) and...
3-d might have taken the game to a new level, or it may have ruined it, but it was worth a try. I'm not sure about it going online though, I don't like that idea.

[Edit by Siren on [TIME]1081172352[/TIME]]

I bashed it because I hated it. I never said the series is tainted for it or that it shouldn't have been done. Merely that I did not like it. And since, last time I checked, I'm not the supreme ruler of the universe (dang!) it's not like my (or anyone else's) opinion should be taken so critically.
People sometimes hate stuff, what's not to believe?

Of course we are all entitled to our opinions, and I respect the opinion of anyone who hates the remake as much as anyone who loves it. It just seemed to me that there were more people out there who hated it (at least, more posting that opinion), and I was curious why. I haven't yet played the remake so at present I can only speculate and go on what other people say. I guess I'm just happy that they made a remake at all, and that soon I'll get to play it and decide for myself whether it represents the original in a positive way or not. Either way, how many hardcore PS fans out there won't buy this title because someone else said it sucks? Very few I would imagine.
BTW, I bought the Japanese import but only own a US Playstation 2. Will the Swap Magic discs allow me to play it? Does anyone out there know?

I won't buy it because it's for the crap machine PS2, and because the more I hear about it, the less I want to play it.

There's a reason why PSO was released only for X-Box and Gamecube. Sega has a personal vendetta with Sony...and I'd back Sega without a second thought...
But then the stupid third party released PSI Generation 1 for ONLY Playstation2...that was an idiotic idea...there would clearly be more buyers for GC and X-Box.

I don't know about the vendetta. There are a good number of Sega games released on the PS2.
The reason you don't see PSO on the PS2 is because Yuji Naka of Sonic Team hates programming for it. He is a programmer and he doesn't like the ways of the PS2 having to be programmed in.
Also because making PSO for the PS2 would mean the game's graphics not even being equal to Dreamcast PSO's. Not enough VRAM.
