Nile: Annihilation of the Wicked

Has anybody else picked up a copy of Nile's new album? I have a feeling that it will be one of this year's major metal releases. If you're a metalhead that hasn't ventured into the world of death metal, you might want to try this.<p>Nile is an excellent technical death metal band. Now, some may argue that the genre of death metal is somewhat hard to adjust to for a person accustomed to typical music. And I would whole-heartedly agree. At first, even for one such as myself who is used to listening to metal, it was hard to wrap my head around the almost sub-audible, guttural vocals and bombastic guitars. <p>However, you have to retrain the way you listen... you must not look to the vocals for guidance in the story, as you do with other genres, but let the mood created by the instruments and guttural growls tell the majority of the story. It's different, to be sure.<p>Death metal never appealed to me because it seemed to lack intelligence. This most certainly is not the case with Nile's new album. Karl Sanders is scholarly in his assemblance of song lyrics, which are steeped in Egyptian mythology. I'm impressed with his comprehension of Egyptian mythology, and it defenitely shows. Not secondary, however, is the band's musical talent. The guitarwork is simply amazing.<p>In any case, this is sure to be a gem in metal for 2005. If you're a metalhead, pick it up. If not, you'll probably wonder what the hell you were just listening to.

haha I heard of Nile. unfortunately i haven't picked it up and it's not like i'm gonna be able to understand an egyptian metal band.<p>I recently bought cult of luna's album salvation. Its freaking brilliant from a swedish metal band.

It's not that their lyrics are in Egyptian, it's that their content is about Egypt. Nevertheless, since they are death metal, the vocals are still rather hard to make out. <p>What type of metal does Cult of Luna play? Since they're from Sweden, I'm going to take a stab and say black metal, but I could be wrong.

oh their definitely not new. they released their 3rd cd earlier this year.

That's strange. Neither my CD store nor Metalstorm had them. They're probably unsigned or signed to a smaller label. Perhaps I'll have to google search them.

They've been around for six years and are signed to Earache, according to Metal-Archives.com.

Earache is smaller, yeah. Additionally, thank you for illustrating my ineptitude, Mizehrith. :p <br>Doom Metal is an interesting genre, though it's safe for me to say that I prefer the speed of thrash or death metal more.

Oh, I agree. Emo is shit. And metal has many sub-genres...I'll try to give a few for example...<p>Heavy Metal<br>Power Metal<br>Progressive Metal (or simply Prog Metal)<br>Death Metal<br>Doom Metal <br>Black Metal<br>Celtic Metal<br>Viking Metal<br>Folk Metal<p>By know means consider that complete...but it just gives some insight to how many sub-genres of metal there are. Yeah, but I hate glam metal. I suppose it <i>is</i> a metal subgenre, if a superficial one. <p>Not trying to piss anyone off, but god do I hate glam metal.
