PS2 battle system

Postby Zubon » Tue Apr 12, 2005 5:23 am

Ok, n00b question time!
I've just started playing PS 2 on the GBA (well, on the DS actually, but with the GBA cart) and I just don't get the battle system!
How come people attack so many times? The enemies keep on attacking and so do my people and eventually they stop and I can enter commands again... This must sound so dumb to all the verterans here but I've played nearly every console RPG released outside of Japan and PS 2 still doesn't add up to me! !@#$

For PSII, the rounds will keep going until you press the (b) button to stop at the end of the round and let you choose what to do for the next round. It works that for for both the GBA and the Genesis system.

They also attack twice in a round if multiple weapons are equipped, such as nei with 2 bars. The attacks aren't a combined value. Each weapon is separate.

Mash attack and keep hitting the button to bust my summon! I don't give a damn what anything else does."
LOL

Ah, yes. I should have mentioned this....
This is a used copy of the PS Collection on the GBA, and unfortunately doesn't have a manual. I've downloaded the "What each weapon/armour does, and who can use it" table (for want of a better name) off the internet so I now know something as painfully obvious as Nei uses bars as her weapon.
Despite that I still didn't get the battle system. So you say it just keeps on going until you press a button? For me it stops after each guy (inc. enemies) has attacked about 2-3 times. :?

[Edit by Zubon on [TIME]1113364037[/TIME]]

(it took me a while to not underestimate the enemies.)

OK, thanks. It still seems weirdly indirect to me. I like to click "ATTACK" or "MAGIC" or whatever and know that my guys will pull it off, not give them a vague pointer and watch all hell break loose until I tell them to calm down... :p
Hehe...I know I'm exaggerating, but it does feel (just like PS 1 and 3) a bit... well, sort of missing the point. I'm sure I'll get used to it and love it soon enough though. ;)

I first played PSII on the GBA collection.
And you can't really check the manual, because it does not state much more than what the items or spells do. And there's no walkthrough!
Right Zubon:
In combat, you can press DOWN to select the ORDER button to open the ORDER submenu. From here, select ORDER or RUN. You can then choose to attack a selected group of enemies (the sword icon), cast a technique (the stars icon), use an item (the box icon), or guard (the shield icon). You will then be returned to the main menu.
To initiate combat, press the A button whilst you've selected FIGHT. The characters will continually fight, unless you press the B button. If you do, the characters can be ordered at the end of the round. I believe you can also press the A button to stop the fighting.
Just get used to the system before you fight the bosses. :D

Thanks everyone, I get it now. Though what I don't get is why Sega did the battle system like that in the first place... %)
