Who has completed PS 1?

Postby Butoden » Sun Feb 29, 2004 9:22 pm

I only just begun (emulation), and it's pretty difficult. Especially with the only clue being: "FIND ODIN IN THIS ONE TOWN"
The weakest monsters are still pretty though, heh must be me... I need to train outside the walls a little more...
And I found the controls a little difficult :(
So who has completed PS 1?

I have. :)
It's normal that even the easiest monsters are difficult. Alis is still weak. After a couple of levels and some equipment, you'll plow through them in no time. ;)

Ooooh! I've completed PSI. It was one of the greatest games of my life. At first Alis will fight badly and get killed by a party of Sworms, but after she learns Heal, things get a little easier. My hint: the first few dungeons don't need mapping, but after that, get out your paper and pen. Unlike some people, I mapped all the dungeons out for myself instead of going to sites to get hints on the dungeons. It gives you a way bigger sense of accomplishment...so if you want to fully experience PSI, then don't get hints or maps that aren't your own.

I've completed PS1 on the GBA weeks ago. Good game, slightly disappointing ending, though.

[Edit by ThePeaGuy on [TIME]1078101788[/TIME]]

Oh yeah, drawing maps... I did that too.
In fact, I have a notebook with many notes in it of Phantasy Star I & II, and maybe III too.
I didn't make any notes for Phantasy Star IV, except I have a paper when I scribbled when characters would learn which Techniques.

Actually, I'm playing it again right now.
Yeah, I do the same, Laconian Shot and it makes it more fun. Also, I think it would be harder to follow someone elses map.
One of my favorite parts of PSI is the part where it's just Alis. The first time you go out the most you can take on is one Sworm, and even at that you have to rush back to Camineet and get healed by Suelo. But that's part of the fun.
PS1 is a VERY old school RPG. And that means:
- you have to power up like mad every time you reach a new area.
- you will need to be near (or at) max level to fight the final boss.
- you never have enough money for the weapons you're expected to buy.
- dungeons will take multiple attempts to navigate through completely.
- overall dialogue and story is very short and no where near as detailed as anyone
would like.
If you still find it difficult, just remember..... they let you save anywhere you want for a reason........
(BTW, I too, had a small notebook with maps for that game)

I just bet the game yesterday :D Lassic was one tough nut to crack, almost had me on my knees.
I played it once when I was a kid, long ago at someone's house (in those days I actually made maps, this time round I just ran blind. This meant I fluted and re-entered Baya Malay Tower around 12 times until I finally ended up on the roof :p), so I decided to pick it up again :)
Hmm, the best weapon in the game is definately (in my opinion) Odin's Lazer Gun. (Soon as I got the Luveno I went to Skure and bought it) I gave the Laconian Axe a try, but it just ended up being another object in my over-crowded inventory. While weaker enemies may take more damage from conventional weapons, there is usually more of them too so Lazer Gun can dish out 20-160 (spread) damage at a time. Other weapons are lucky to dish out 10-20 against the harder enemies.
One complaint (yes, it's very trivial), is that the inventory is too small and there are too many required items crowding it. Less space for tasty burgers and the like. (Can't adventure on an empty stomache :p)
And the Magic Lamp isn't as important as some people make it out to be. Flashes are dropped like hotcakes by later enemies. #)

Yes, but it saves some inventory space for more Burgers to be brought or obtained, though. Handy those Burgers are.

[Edit by ThePeaGuy on [TIME]1078141010[/TIME]]

Last time I completed PSI was, hmm, 3 years ago, and it was the nth time. Every time I play it I still refuse to use maps, I just find that venturing without a map is much more fun, maybe because I have to memorize everything no matter how many battles I have to do, the only dungeon that every time gives me problems is the Baya Malay Tower, damned traps!
BTW I found that it wasn't that much difficult after some levels, well, compared to II which, IMO, required much more leveling.

YOU ALL MAD MAPS!!!?!!? ~0 oh boy I should have done that O_O I really am an idiot O_O anyway... Yeah beat it never did maps... (maybe thats why it took so long to beat..?) Great game but pain in the ass to reply since you can't cheat on it if you just want to hear the story again...

As long as you extracted money from rich enemies and bought decent equipment you could cruise through most areas without -too much- trouble (or running). I remember at one point my characters getting flattened before I finally broke the bank and got them that snazzy new armour they'd been eyeing.
