A friend of mine is on a japanese BBS and he downloads the episodes about a week after their on tv. The quality sucks, but at least you know what's worth picking up when is comes out on DVD. (saved me alot of wasted money)

I don't have my own TV, that put me in a televisionfree condition, it have its pro and cons. I don't have enough money to afford anime DVDs (hell, I have barely enough money for mangas), but I know there are some anime that are being programmed I'd like to see. In the end, I can't, but that's not a big loss after all.

I have downloaded Tokyo Underground (fansubbed) this weekend. Took me 23 hours...
I couldn't play it, it needed the DivX codec. I install it, only to have my fears confirmed... it's slow. The video can't keep up with the music.
Stupid DivX! It's the only video codec which is slow on my PC!
Anyone know any good tools to convert it to another format?

There's an alternative FREE codec (DivX is not free as I remember), and AFAIK it's less resource eating compared to DivX. Also it will take some time to master but I found it worth the efforts much of the time.
http://www.vidomi.com/
I don't know of any tool to, ehm, de-DivX though(I couldn't think of a better term (@) ), and if existed the result will be something way bigger than the original.
Alternatively you can try to tweak the DivX options, or download a less demanding player (the vidomi one is one of the best) like BSPlayer
http://www.bsplayer.org

[Edit by Goldark on [TIME]1078832282[/TIME]]

It seemed to me that the codec itself is free for personal use. Maybe you were looking at DivX Pro. :)
Thanks, I'll try that one.
I use Windows Media Player. Can't get something that eats less, I think.
EDIT: That codec doesn't work. :(
Going to try the BS Player.
EDIT: Bleh, they want me to give them my details. No way.
[Edit by Benoit on [TIME]1078856907[/TIME]]
[Edit by Benoit on [TIME]1078857563[/TIME]]
[Edit by Benoit on [TIME]1078867495[/TIME]]

The unofficial DivX 3.11 Alpha codec is a good alternative. It works better than the official one, but still not enough. It's in synch for only 5-10 seconds before the video gets behind again.
I definitely will have to convert this.

Just for the hell of it, I began watching Tokyo Underground together with my sister. And I found the solution to my problem just by coincidence. (@) I noticed that the movie does remain in synch when I don't make it full-screen. Just play it in the window. W00T! There were only some borders of the picture I couldn't get on the screen, but I don't mind. :) I could at least read the subtitles.

I watch Adult Swim on Cartoon Network in the United States. There's Yu Yu Hakusho(did I spell it right?), Witch Hunter Robin, Inuyasha, Case Closed, and Lupin The 3rd(Is that considered Manga? :? ). I actually only watch Case Closed because I like mysteries, and occasionaly I watch Inuyasha out of pure boredom.

[Edit by Tails99 on [TIME]1093412817[/TIME]]

DivX sucks your resources because it can compress video files ALOT which makes them a much smaller file size. For instance, a 22-24 min episode with DivX is anwhere from 150-300mb, uncompressed it would be abour 60gb. Your choice :p.
I download my anime to check it out, if I like it, I'll buy it. Thats how I keep up.

You're wrong there TeknoCrystal.
The AVi files are not 60 gb.
I can take the same AVI file of say 1 gb and turn it into a 320 mb REAL MEDIA file using the latest real producer plus and it'll have 400 percent real performance.
Real Media can turn big avi files small enough to stream or download.
Why isn't it used?
Because the encoder is expensive as hell and people don't believe STREAMED format is better. When you can compress it to stream SMOOTHLY with no picture distortion on a 1.5 mb cable/dsl like, then you have something awesome.
If you had AIM, I'd show you a file done in DIV-X and RM. You'll see that RM can make it just as good, if not even better.
P.S. My first music videos used Real Encoder g2 back in 1998. The last ones used the Real Producer 8 plus set at 28k steam setting. That was the 2001 converter. They were 60 mb files reduced to less than 7 mb at that small setting. No picture quality was compromised. Double sizing and full sizing stress even Div-X.
I made my files small so dialup users could get them. I had to put up with 26400 on a 56k line for 2 years, 2.96 kbps download. I have a heart and so everyone will enjoy my videos.
And all those flix you can pay for to download on your computer and watch with perfect quality or stream on your PC are all done in REAL MEDIA.
Real Media is expensive but it is way better. Consult me on AIM for proof.
--------------------------------------
The point of this post was to show off the greatness of Real Media ^^ Not meant to insult.

[Edit by Lord Khyron on [TIME]1093496449[/TIME]]

They can reach 60gb, if not much larger, you have ot remember I said uncompressed. Most AVI files out there that aren't DivX are compressed with the standard Microsoft codec. Which brings it down to about 1-2gb. And I don't like Real Media. Ever since Real Player 7 I've disliked it, the cost is part of it, but there are also many other things, such as (with the free version) you can't adjust gamma, or colour balance, etc. DivX is the perfect and cost efficient solution for those with higher end computers.

Yes but Real Media can do more than Div-X. Especially if you play with the encoding options.
I'd love to give you a demonstration on AIm if you want ^^
I agree with Div-X being cheap and easy to use, I will always do Real Media because it's small and can stream if I add that to my webpage. Div-X doesn't optimize for streaming.
