You're going to get a new PC because you have to, or because you want to? I thought you were, mainly against having to upgrading?

A bit of both, actually.
Yes, I'm against upgrading in general, but there will be a time when it's really needed (unlike upgrading every year, bah).
I have to because my study direction is Computer Science, of which I passed the first year, and it would be better to be a bit more up-to-date. The assignments that I got at the start of last school year I couldn't even properly do because my PC's parts like CPU and chipset are so old by now that they can't even seem to be able to be found on the Internet. This had no real effect on my grades, though.
I want to a bit because there's more and more software that can't be run on Windows 95 anymore, though I haven't got that much trouble yet. I fear that soon the only genre of PC games I play, bishoujo games, won't be able to run anymore on this OS. Their required specs are starting to go a bit uphill as well.
That doesn't mean I will throw away my loyal PC, though. It's still a nice computer that still amazes people.

If I may ask, Benoit, is the PC yours or your families? If it's the latter, why not keep your old one for exclusively yourself when you replace it with a new one?
And what OS are you going to get? Linux? I'd recommend Win98 Second Edition, as it's not yet obselete (most things can run on it) and it's much like Win95.

The PC is half mine, and half my parents'. I paid a good part of it with my own money, and my parents provided the rest. I still consider it mine, though.
Linux? OMG no. Not that I have a bias against Linux, but after seeing it on my brother's PC, I don't think I would ever want it. He had Mandrake Linux, and while it is a safe system, it's slow. Besides, I mentioned earlier how most things are for Windows anyway... Bishoujo games are only for Windows.
Yeah, I was planning to put Win98 SE on it. Indeed not obselete, and it's a great OS. The only problem is finding a copy of it. Stupid Microsoft dropped Win98 distribution last December, while still going to support it for a certain period.
I do know someone who says he can easily get a hold of it, but it's not easy for me to get a hold of him, haha. He appears sometimes at the manga shop. Maybe David knows how I can contact him.

Linux is amazing. I have SuSE Linux one my other computer, makes it much faster than when it had Windows (that was Windows 2000 though) and you can get a program called Wine which allows you to run .exe files on Linux. It's handy :D. Oh and I also love the Frozen Bubble game.

It's good for playing PC games and nothing else. That's why I use XP. :D

Furthermore, Prince Noah, Windows 2000 was never intended for home use. It's a professional platform developed along the NT line of Windows Operating Systems, which have always used a totally separate design concept from the normal Windows line. Basically, you were playing games on an operating system designed to organize and operate network applications. The two variations of it are optimized for Workstations and Servers.

Pay attention to that.

you can get a program called Wine which allows you to run .exe files on Linux. It's handy

It's nowhere near perfect. It can't run all programs, and there are many problems. For example, Naflign tried playing Septerra Core with it. He couldn't see the movies.
My brother's PC isn't slow, and it still took Linux a minute to start up, and another one to shut down.

Mark my words, this will be the last and final time. Many people have TOLD me that Windows 2000 was the best OS for playing PC games. But I was lied to. 2000 can do nothing but play PC games, but not properly. Other than that, 2000 can't do sh*t for me. It's the worst OS on the market. Every 2000 comp I used, locked up every half hour.
The funny thing, is that Windows 98 does a better job of everything than 2000 does. Putting it simply, I prefer 98 over 2000. So don't go telling me my reasons for hating 2000 are groundless, because they are not.
EDIT: Of course, I can't say that Windows 95 was any better. %)
[Edit by Prince Noah on [TIME]1091904820[/TIME]]

I'm not saying your reasons are groundless at all. I'm just pointing out that PhanGarrett explained to you before why Windows 2000 sucks for you. That is, you are doing things with it that it wasn't designed for. Feel free to hate it because it can't do that, but it's pretty pointless because of this.
That's why Win98 works better for you. As for why Win95 doesn't work for you, I don't know, but having 6 years of experience with it, I say it's pretty damn good. And yes, I do play games on it and surf the Internet, along with other stuff.

My whole family and all my friends in school and just about everybody I know hates 2000 for the same reasons! Of course, we were all b*llsh*tted into believing that 2000 was good for PC games. %)
PhanGarrett already explained? Sorry kid, he has yet to. First time I've heard anything like that. lol. :D
Pointless for hating 2000? I forgot to mention, that Windows 2000 ALSO, can't do anything that it claims to. Good for office work? How hillarious. It doesn't even come with Microsoft word! I find it even more hillarious that people say 2000 is good, and it's Disk Defragmenter doesn't even work because it has errors that need to be fixed! Yet 2000 doesn't even come with Scan Disk. (and don't tell me 'yes it does', because I bought 2000 brand new in both editions. They both suck.)

That's why Win98 works better for you. And yes, I do play games on it and surf the Internet, along with other stuff.

I found 98 (with just a LITTLE bit of configuration) very, very decent. I just wish it were faster. Other than that, pretty damn good. Unlike 2000, 98 comes with everything I need.
However, when I heard of XP, I asked hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of people about it. All of them said it's extremely decent, and supirior to every other OS. So I decided to try it out. And I like it. By default, I can run SO many PC games on my computer at the same resolution that HuBBs does, and very fast. PLUS, unlike all the other OS's I've used, XP comes with it's own virus scanner and remover! :D That saves me the trouble of downloading any of those off the net. :) Not to mention, of course, XP does have Scan Disk, but it doesn't need it. How would I know, might you ask? Because, well, maybe it does, but I ran it so many times, and it turns out I didn't need to.
Of course, with my computer, I didn't get a printer. But for the price I got it at, and the fact that I almost never use one anyway, I got quite a bargian. :)
EDIT: Phew! What a mouthfull! :p
[Edit by Prince Noah on [TIME]1091907509[/TIME]]

Yeah, I was planning to put Win98 SE on it. Indeed not obselete, and it's a great OS.

True. I still wish that I hadn't parted with mine.
As for finding it, there are a great many places that still have stock, as they usually put it in refurbished computers. That's were I got mine. You may not be able to get it from Microsoft anymore, but there are still places that have it.
