It can't be 1286, because the intro of PS 2 says it takes place 1000 years after PS 1.
PS 2 is 1284, the official birthdates match this. Many of Ripp's birthdates, and naming the ship Rolf's parents were on the Outlander, were wrong. I could state the other things..
And if you further want proof.. Naflign's translation.
Oh! The Phantasy Star 2 English script, on Phantasy-star.net, doesn't place a date for PS 2 to begin with. There isn't one in the date
Plus, PS IV actually says 2284, and it is 1000 years after ps 2. So do the math and 1286 is illogical.

You know, if we're going to discuss contradictions, based on the Japanese continuity, Phantasy Star I takes place in AW 342. Phantasy Star II takes place in AW 1284. Phantasy Star IV established that Dark Force comes back every 1000 years. The compendium also states that Phantasy Star II takes place 1000 years after Phantasy Star I.
1284
-342
---------
942
We seem to be short a few decades and some odd years, eh?

According to the compendium and the japanese game..
AW 341 - La Shiec learns the secret of the Algol Solar System's genesis. Forming a space-time gate, he comes into contact with the sealed-away spirit-life form. As a result, he summons the projected body of the Profound Darkness, Dark Force, and becomes its loyal servant. That same year, a reign of terror begins.
LASHIEC summoned DF early. Summoning him early destroys the time frame.
Also, the conjunction messed it up as well.
You also need to realize, that the DF Rolf and Co fight, is the one that CAME TO ALGO with the Earthmen.
It's not the one that escaped through the seal. Therefore, if you take the period, One did escape at the time.
And in PS IV, 3 Dark Forces are there, So therefore the 1 per 1000 years is a flawed rule. Also it's "About every 1000 years" so that gives a little leeway.
P.S. You know as well as I do that japanese games don't follow precise dating in 1000 year periods.

[Edit by Lord Khyron on [TIME]1122945227[/TIME]]

An interesting take regarding Dark Force, but it doesn't negate the core issue: Phantasy Star II is stated to take place 1000 years after Phantasy Star I in the compendium, Dark Force or not. The math doesn't add up.

It doesn't add up because of what Lashiec did.. It threw off the seal.
Plus Remember: The Dark force in PS 2 came with the Earthmen. He is the one we're dealing with.
Records do not exist prior to PS 2 thanks to the earthmen, so Lutz has been alive for 1000 years.. So maybe it's him?
All I can think of is that the seal is irregular to begin with.
Maybe 960 years in Algo = 1000 in Earth?

Do you know why an eclipse occurs? While the orbit of one body around another tends to follow a steady pattern, it won't follow it completely religiously. Most of the time, the Earth will be a bit below the moon when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are all in line.
Hence, 1000 Algol-years is not going to be an exact number, since the planets are probably going to have a few irregularities in orbit over the course of 1000 orbits.

LASHIEC summoned DF early. Summoning him early destroys the time frame.

Well, that's just your conjecture. Summoning early does just that: summon it early. It doesn't necessarily create any abnormalities to the weakening of the seal...just a window in which Dark Force can get through.

You also need to realize, that the DF Rolf and Co fight, is the one that CAME TO ALGO with the Earthmen.

Not necessarily wrong, and possibly right, but that is up to whether you believe the Time Loop theory or not, so that point is entirely disputable.

And in PS IV, 3 Dark Forces are there, So therefore the 1 per 1000 years is a flawed rule. Also it's "About every 1000 years" so that gives a little leeway.

Well, I believe that's because the destruction of Palma weakened the planetary seal considerably. As for "About every 1000 years", you're completely right; it's just an approximate time in our unit of measuring time to a planetary cycle that is subject to change, more or less.

Well According to Naflign's retranslation, the Dark Force with the Earthmen is the same one that destroyed the Earthmen's planet..

What a pity. I read the topic and I was hoping that there would be something in here about Phantasy Star that I didn't already know...
