Phantasy Star

Postby brown29 » Fri Nov 20, 2009 1:13 pm

Hello,

Just been reading some reviews for Phantasy Star 2 and also some reviews over at the shining force forum. 2 and 4 are rated as the best RPG of all time on the megadrive console and that's even on the shining force forum people are saying that.

Phantasy Star 2 and 4 for me I think are quite possibly the best RPG games iv ever played...

Which leads me to why I have posted on this forum. I think it's a shame the series never left the megadrive 16 bit era and was not expanded on to other platforms like the PS1 / 2/ 3 etc

Look what this did for final fantasy by releasing titles on this platform. They created some of the best RPG's that as ever been (FF7 etc).

Just a shame with Phantasy Star fan based that all were left with is playing replays of the series we have come to enjoy...

Final Fantasy is a popular series, but that doesn't mean all the titles were masterpieces. Especially Final Fantasy VII.

Still the fans have alot more choice then the phantasy star series... 1 is for the master system and 3 is more or less unplayable by todays standards...

I prefer quality over quantity. By the way, something most Final Fantasy games don't have is narrative continuity.

I disagree. It's not any more 'unplayable' than Phantasy Star II.

ummm, Phantasy Star did go beyond MD 16-bit, altho i cant say i care for it

i personally think PS1 has the best replay value, being non-linear. (find the most efficient path)

For myself, the saddest thing that happened to PS series was that they didn't continue the plot anymore after PSIV. Totally different universe and so on.

Funny that you say that PS never made it beyond the 16 bit era, ignoring for reasons I can imagine PSO, PSU, PSP and PS0, and then mention Final Fantasy.
SEGA owes me money!

Never really played FSU and the rest of them but like you i don't really care for them...

All am saying is it's a shame the old style PS2 and 4 story never got carryied on or there where no more games of that style...

Where as other RPG's are still going today and there fans still really enjoy them...

Saying that I would buy the remakes of 1 and 2 today but it's no in english...

Poor...

That depends.

The Lufia series has been dead for 6 years, and the last game, Ruins of Lore, wasn't by the original team and not worth writing home about. But when Square-Enix bought Taito, they got the rights to the Lufia franchise, and they have recently announced a new Lufia game. It's a remake/re-imagining of Lufia II, though.

Shining Force never got a real sequel.

Lunar has been pretty dead, save for the remakes of the first game that keep appearing, and a bad sequel years ago.

Grandia is dead.

Wonder Boy is dead.

I'm sure others could come up with more examples.

You guys are making me feel like the weird freak in the class all over again. I loved PSO and its iterations (Never played Ep3, though), I'm in love with PS Universe and of course its PSP variants and I'd like a DS to play Zero.

I love the classic series as much as ALL of you, but I understand that the classic arc ended with PS4 (or 3, depends on how you look at it).

Having different timelines that have nothing to do with each other except for a main theme and characteristics is not so bad at least for me. It can help redefine a franchise. Just like they did with Megaman, Megaman X, Megaman Zero and ZX. Sure, they all exist within a single universe, but they're still interesting in their own merits. Another example is the Gundam franchise. The original continuity doesn't affect the newer continuities and gives creators a certain degree of freedom.

Addendum, you know why by now...

I think that comparing newer iterations to the original series we grew up with is a bad thing. We lose focus of the merits achieved by the newer ones and can miss out on a real gem that way.

PSO was weird, but it gave us a customizable character, and a not exactly linear story where you were more of a witness than the real hero. That was a very interesting change of pace for me.

PSU and its spawns on the PSP go back to the linear story with PSO characteristics like missions, combat system (obviously, revamped from the ground up), but kept a character driven story with interesting twists, while including voice acting.

Sure, no game is perfect, but those are interesting experiences and fun moments to be had if you are willing to play outside the sandbox you had when you were a kid.

While I'd still like a Phantasy Star story based in the Algol star system, I can't say I haven't enjoyed Ragol or the Gurhal system.

Creativity is something these series have had in spades.
