This may have been true before RPGs became popular, but ever since Final Fantasy VII, I really don't think so.

More than RPG's, strategy games. Often the two go hand in hand but not always.

I may be wrong, but I think that when the gameplay concentrates on an intriguing storyline that unfolds as you advance rather than on battles, leveling up, and weapon and item collecting, or even some kind of comparative status, you tend to have smarter players, because it seems more like reading a living book than playing Street Fighter with weapons.

However, Deus Ex becomes a paradox, then - best storyline I have ever seen in a modern days PC game, but in an 1st person shooter :^P

I belive that strategy games, like Civilization, "require" more intelligent player...
But as always: there's many kinds/forms of intelligence.

The smartest people play Brain Age...duh....

How about we look at a simulation racing game. Sure you could just go buy a Ferrari and drive fast. But the guy who knows how to tune up his six cylinder Japanese import will win. (If car customization is implemented correctly).

You can't say who the most intelligent gamers are unless you define intelligence.

i would disagree with the statement that smarter people play rpg's. I would rephrase that to "more patient people"

Traditional console RPGs are easy to play through, and are popular, so I don't think more intelligent people are playing those.

Strategy RPGs, perhaps.

Or "people with zero social lives".
