Idlers suck (rant)

I'm tired of joining an IRC channel, and seeing almost 50 other people in there who don't say a thing, idling away. They've been there for hours, sometimes even days, not saying anything. What's the point? Answer: there is no point. Note that this also happens often with people signed on to Instant Messenger services.

When you confront them with the fact, they have excuses like:

"I'm logging the channel."
Important channels often get logged by a bot. Also, only ONE person needs to log.

"People can talk to me and ask questions this way, and I can get back to them later."
That's exactly what E-MAIL was made for!

"My PC is downloading music/video/game files." / "I'm running a server."
Okay, but there is no need to be signed on to IRC or some Instant Messenger service at the same time!

"I need to stay in the channel so no one can take it over."
This is why ChanServ bots exist, genius!

People with such attitudes piss me off.

Follow your own advice. If you're going to be away from AIM for a long time, 30 mins or more, SIGN off.

I'm never away for more than an hour, unless, as has happened a couple times recently, I've fallen asleep.

Actually, they are. Asking a simple question in a channel whose purpose is to answer people's questions and not getting a response within an hour even though there are about 50 people in the channel is quite annoying.

And they're still wasting electricity and bandwidth.
