Phantasy Star III mysteries

Postby BenoitRen » Wed Dec 19, 2007 12:45 am

Weeks ago, Tsu (aka Dreamer) found a screenshot of Rhys/Kein saying something to the left of the castle. In the English version, the text is gone, replaced with "...". While I was playing the Japanese version to get some other screenshots (more on that below), I took a screenshot of this:

According to one of Tsu's friends, it says something about a girl in the neighbouring kingdom. Can anyone translate what Rhys is saying?

Next, I was always curious if the Chirpers were named Rappies in the Japanese version. So I took a couple screenshots. One of a fight against a Chirper. One of the Rappy Cave entrance in PSIV, where you see a box with the location's name in it. Lastly, one of a fight against Rappies.

Comparing the screenshots, I could find out which signs meant "Rappy" in PSIV. Comparing those with the PSIII screenshot's monster name, they seem a bit similar, but they are not the same. Still, if anyone can shed some light on this, that'd be great.

EDIT: I kept taking the wrong Chirper screenshot, but now it's correct. And it turns out that in JP PSIII the creature IS named Rappy!

Rhys says something about marrying the princess of the neighbouring kingdom. I think that he says he can't stop thinking of her since he was supposed to marry her, but omeone better at Japanese should check that (Yumpotart, kochira eeee!!).

As for the rappies, in PSIII it is called Keïn. (Or maybe Kuin, but it looks more like Keïn to me. Hard to tell with pixelated fonts sometimes...)
In PSIV the cave is Rappii's Cave. The birds are called shiso-rappii, where shiso maens something which I can't look up at the moment since I don't have my dictionary with me. Sumimasen!

(BTW; the names of the characters are really strange...)

I think that's because he didn't get the Rappy's name in the PSIII screenshot. :p Looks like the normal battle menu thing with Rhys' (Kein's in this case) stats and battle options.

OHSHI-! Tsu is right. At least we now have a second opinion on Rhys' Japanese name. Rebecca translated it in the Compendium as "Kane", but used "Kein" when she started translating PSIII.

I've took one with the monster's name now. You may have to refresh/reload the page to see the updated screenshot. The name appears to the right in the battle stats box.

Comparing the characters with PSIV's, they still don't match up. :(

Sorry but you've picked up Rhys' weapon, the "naifu" (knife). Give it another shot! Try starting a new game with message speed 1 to make it easier to capture the monster's names.

About Rhys/Kane/Kein: Directly translating the katakana yields "kein". Translating the pronounciation of the katakana yields "Kane" (or "Cain" or "Kain"). Any of those spellings would be correct for an English translation.

Success! I got the monster's name now. And it's made of the same characters as in PSIV! I edited the first post to reflect. I used a different image name now, so no refreshing needed to get the new image.

Yes, clearly the same characters. And I'll confirm that the name is indeed "rappy".

Weird. So that bit of dialogue isn't Rhys'. It's probably an easter egg that the developers put there to hint at a bigger story, or something...

No, that was just a screenshot of Kein's stats instead of the enemy's name. Please read the full thread. :)

Yeah, it doesn't seem to be Rhys talking. the dialect sounds specifically like it's an old man speaking, but thats only my speculation. it's hard to tell when its out of context, but that translation should be pretty much accurate.

an alternative translation could be "letting you marry" or "making you marry" -- in japanese, the verb form for "letting" and "making" someone do something are the same, so you can only tell based on context. i decided "having you marry" was most fitting, since it's more neutral and pretty much means the same thing.

i should play PS3. i've only played the very beginning @_@;

The japanese PS III script mentions Rhy's fiancee in the other kingdom.

Rhys MIGHT be thinking of her. She is mentioned twice.

Sega of America had to remove it because they removed the references to him even being betrothed to Lena.
