I just recently started playing the original Phantasy Star (master system version) i used to own a Sega master system but never ended up getting Phantasy star for it. the first one i acctualy ended up playing was Phantasy Star 2 for Genesis right when it came out. I loved it! then later i played part 3,but up untill now i have never played the original. I have to say i am impressed at how superior it is to other RPG,s of that time. it is much better than Dragon Warrior, or Ultima. the monsters are animated (unlike the others i mentioned) and the Graphics are much better.

Yes, PSI was far ahead of it's RPG counterparts of that era. Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior... none of them could really match PSI.
Ah, back when Sega was in it's glory days.

When I think back to when PS1 first came out in the US, I'm amazed it was actually brought over here! RPGs (especially for the console systems) hardly got the attention in the US that they deserved.
It's sad to think that close to 20 years later the US market is still being denied good RPGs because of lack of interest.
At least we got lucky with Phantasy Star :)

yes, it was really amazing , also i think it allows the most freeedom of all japanese rpg
japanese rpg usually are very linear cause they are like novel-books ( i love that , american rpg are so "empty" )
the 3d dungeon and combat-background graphics are unmatched quite even in 16 bit era ~0

Phantasy Star has:
1) an actual plot that isnt just a generic rpg plot
2) a cat as a player character, with uber-l33t stats
3) dungeons that are actually a challenge
4) sequels that follow on from it but aren't rehashes of it
5) value for money. master systems are still cheap here. or a game gear and converter would probably be even cheaper.
what else does a game need? true, the background music leaved a lot to be desired, but the master system isn't really the best platform for sound.

The background music was good for its time.
The FM music was even better.
