Anyway, this is a place to rant about your bands that refuse to evacuate your CD player, the type of music that entertains you during hideously boring Economics classes if your teacher's name is Mr. Pax, or other musical ditties that you love. Such as Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Or Patty Cake.

Anyway, I used to like hip-hop. Then rock. Then (real) techno. Now I'm in a sort of transition phase between trance and minimal. Though I still listen to those other genres from time to time.

It samples Harder Better Faster Stronger, but he does it WELL. And he's not o pretentious as to pretend it's not sampled. It says so right in the album.

I'm a huge fan of progressive rock, and jazz, as well as metal (but I'm pretty choosy about which bands-- there's a lot of crap in the genre). I guess I enjoy these genres because the technical level of playing is generally very high, and a lot of bands are very musically expressive, which is something that can be hard to find nowadays. I also like smatterings of other stuff, which you'll see in just a moment.

As for Techno, I'm not quite sure why the majority of it qualifies as music. Most DJs compose songs with a drum machine and their Macbook. If they even use manual synthesizers, what they do is very minimal and I cannot for the life of me see what about it is musical. Phrasing? No! Dynamics? No! Interesting melody that carries on for more than two bars without being looped? Not a chance! It's like the genre has been starved for ideas for so long that it cannot help but repeat its tired old clichés.
I've given techno a fair shake, and some of what is being done with sampling and such is very cool, but there's so much that's obscured by a lack of musicality that it's really not worth much time. A lot of it may be catchy, but it's not necessarily "music".
I think the lack of instrumental prowess in the genre has distanced it from musicality, for one thing. For another, the musical necrophilia that remixes usually embody simply disgusts me. Lets take a song written by people who can actually create something musical, speed the tempo up (or down), add fade-ins and a drum machine, and then profit by it. Nevermind the fact that the phrasing has gone to shit because of all the idiotic breaks in the song, or that the entire flow and mood of the song has become generic, but hey, let's call it music anyway. I've seen some exceptions, but pitifully few. Tasteful remixes are not a majority, that's for sure.
Unfortunately, I've yet to hear many techno groups that give the genre validity or musical credibility. This may offend the tastes of some people here, but if you've listened to the genre, you likely know what I'm talking about. I'm not saying that not catchy or fun to listen to sometimes, but to me it seems like a stretch to call the majority of it "music"

Some stuff can be bland and repetative, but sometimes repetition is a good thing. We all like what we like.

Some people may define music as something that they enjoy listening too, such as myself. It doesn't matter to me how it is made or what rules it follows.

Other than that, I like a lot of music from the Megaman X series and classic Megaman, and I like a lot of music by Motoi Sakuraba who is the composer for Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, etc. for those who don't know.

LaconianShot, I always thought music was any sequence of sounds that make up a coherent tune and/or beat. In fact, didn't the very first musicians in Africa make their music by singing and by beating animal-hide drums, because it's all they had? Why does music have to be something that requires a show of insane aptitude, knowledge of theory and only using traditional instruments? I don't see anything wrong with taking advantage of modern technology and having some fun with it. Mike Romeo of Symphony X does it for the instrumental songs. But anyway, if techno indeed is not music, what should I call it instead? Can't be random noise, because it's clearly more than that -- there are coherent melodies and rhythm that I might be inclined to start tapping my foot along to, and humming along with, depending on track. Isn't that all that matters?

To Neo: Eh, just something I did under one of my aliases a couple years ago locally. But still. More than most people can say.

To Laco: I was sure you had to be over 13 to join here. Unless you consider a cheap shot at me after I asked for a reduction of drama to be mature. Again, you are sadly misinformed.

Also to Laco: I have a challenge for you, and I will take this oppurtunity to say that if you had given techno a "fair shake" you would have calle dit by its proper term, EDM. If you donwloaded everything you saw off a filesharing program after typing "techno" in the search box, well, I'd hate it too. Now, onto my challenge. There's a list of songs below.
