He was talking about sequels in a series sense, not a timeline sense. This much is obvious. Adventure of Link was shunned by fans, which is why he's now saying it was just a side-story.

I found the damn quote!

Miyamoto: Ocarina of Time is the first story, then the original Legend of Zelda, then Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and finally A Link to the Past. It's not very clear where Link's Awakening fits in--it could be anytime after Ocarina of Time

from right here:

Keep in mind, this interview was from 1998, way before Benoit was on the net.

Boo yah! He did quote it!

Still, that interview was back in 1998. A lot more Legend of Zelda games have been made since then.

He hasn't retracted it because he's not a politician who has to keep track of every little statement he makes. If a newer interview includes different information, then that's the one we follow. And Benoit has a point, there have been lots of different Zelda games since then, and that forces them to remodel the timeline. No doubt that your piece of information is very much outdated by now.

The funeral march,
The cracked brass bells will ring;
To summon back the fire witch
To the Court of the Crimson King.
