A crushing blow to HD-DVD..

Postby Lord Khyron » Thu Jan 10, 2008 8:43 pm

New Line Cinema confirmed that they will move to Blu-ray exclusive support and no longer support HD DVD. In addition, Times Online reported that Paramount and 20 other media companies are preparing to remove their names from the HD-DVD alliance and move to Blu-ray.

And..

Confirming earlier reports that it would follow Warner to Blu-ray exclusivity, New Line says its first HD DVD title ('Pan's Labyrinth') will also be its last.

Though it was widely assumed that New Line (whose parent company is Time-Warner) would follow Warner Home Video's lead and continue to release on HD DVD through May 2008, a company rep tells us that New Line's move will go into immediate effect, with all of the studio's planned HD DVD releases now cancelled (including the HD DVD versions of current Blu-ray releases 'Hairspray' and 'Rush Hour 3,' which had previously been planned for HD DVD release sometime in early 2008).

and..

What does everyone think? Is this really a blow to HD-dvd?

Yeah, I think so.

But I don't care for anything High-Definition. It's all a scam to make us buy things all over again.

No, DVD was more than a quality upgrade. It got rid of the VHS' dodgy picture quality, the fragile tapes, and removed rewind/forward times.

Also, DVDs didn't require you to buy a new TV complete with matching cables. You just bought a DVD player.

Indeed you're right BenoitRen,
DVD had that advantage over the VHS, moreover, it saved me and all of us tons of place with the assurance that DVD quality wouldn't worsen.

HD DVD don't bring a worthy improvement (I'm just at the begining of refurnishing my videotheque)
Plus, now, I'd rather have a movie on my computer I can transfer and delete whenever I want rather than a DVD which only role would be to take the dust.

I hate Sony.

But I think that bluray will win over HD DVD.

There is already talk of Microsoft making a Blu-ray player for the Xbox 360. So far, there is no official word, but it already seems likely.
Tell my tale to those who ask it. Tell it truly, the evil deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest... is silence.

Eh, who needs DRM-ray? I'm going to stick to DVDs + HDD and illegal downloaded movies =D

Yes. I agree.
At least they should have upgraded to Bluray right from VHS.
Now, already, Bluray seem to be 'older format'. (Read about K4.)
And talking about the size. 35-40 gigs. Not enough for optical storage nowdays.
I think best they could have done was that they would have upgraded from DVD to HVD.

DVD was a smart move from VHS. Atough Digital VHS would have been nice, but it really never got the wind under it's wings.
Bluray seems (to me) to be just a side step. Eventually we will watch 4K movies at home. Only time will tell if I will buy any Blubay things. Maybe a Bluray drive for my laptop will/can be first...
I am NaN!
