The original version of Phantasy star is one of the greatest games ever made. My wife and I have played it many times over the years. I am excited about playing the remake which many of you say sucks. It may not be near as good as the original but it something I have been hoping for since the playstation 2 came out. It still will be fun and playing it again with better graphics will be a treat. Sure graphics are not everything but the new graphics will make the game different enough to play again. Remember most movie sequels are not as good as the original but they can still be very entertaining. I hope conspiracy games doesn't take to heart so many of the negative responces from some players and decide to cancel the project. This is not going to be a $50 game which there are many games out their that gamers have paid this much for a crappy game. So when this game is finally released here in the US we can all rate this game and see how it fairs. Until then lets just be glad that a remake of this game is coming. If you don't think you will like than just don't buy it.
By the way has anyone heard any kind of update on when it will be released? Conspiracy's home page only says 2004.
If you like an RPG where you spend most of your time talking to NPCs in the correct order, then you will have a blast with this game.

I tend to agree with Benoit.
At first I did not mind too much. Probably I was just so happy to see the nice 2D artwork. I had played the original when it came out, so it has been a while. I do not like the music, but again I thought it was not a "show-stopper." I really liked how you could see your characters attacking, and the magic spells were nice.
Now it is getting a bit frustrating. Still, since I am not fluent in Japanese, I do not feel I can really judge this aspect of the game completely. Maybe if you can read it, it would flow a lot faster and smoother...

Even if you understand it and know where to go and who to talk to, it's a chore and a time waster. They did it just to lengthen the game out a little (they made levelling up faster and gave you Atlases to map the dungeons so that killed the original time-consuming aspects of the game).
That's why I'm afraid of what they'll do for Phantasy Star 2. If you take away the lengthy dungeon exploring and powering up, it's a VERY short game and what they'll come up with to counter that just chills me to the bone.

Okay, so I just got done playing the remake for the first time and so I thought I'd post my initial impressions of it here.
The first thing I have to say is that it *is* a lot easier to get things done in this version. I remember playing the original, it took forever just to save up enough money to buy the secrets in Scion. That was mostly due to the fact that it was so easy to get killed by the first few monster types that you had to spend some of that money you earned on better armour. Here in the remake, I was on level 12 by the time I finally figured out how to get the Roadpass (this is because I don't understand a single character of Japanese). It is *very* easy to level up AND earn money. A little too easy really. I have just under four hours logged in on the game and I'm already to the point where I'm about to add Noah (Lutz, whoever) to my party (and I can only speculate that it'd be way less than 4 hours if I were able to actually *read* what was going on)! It also seems that the overworld is smaller and the dungeons are way simpler now (is it just me or what?). It's probably too late to do anything about it now, but anyone and everyone interested should send an e-mail to Conspiracy Games and tell them to bulk up the difficulty level a tad; maybe they'll listen... who knows?
Anyways, the story *seems* pretty much the same as does the events required to progress it. The major differences I've noticed so far include obtaining the roadpass and getting the sweetcake (I don't remember having to talk to anyone specific after getting the key... in the remake you must converse with a girl in Parolit before heading off to the dungeon where the bakery is located).
The game play is nice. Nicer than the original if for no other reason than it's more modernized. I really like the "consult" option. It's helpful to me now because I can't understand Japanese, but I doubt it will mean much in the English version. I wish more RPGs had that feature though (don't you hate when you come back to an RPG after not playing it for a while and you can't remember what you were supposed to be doing?). I like the battles, though the animation of the main characters is a little weak. The speed of the battles seems increased which is a good thing... and I'm curious if this speed increase will be evident on those damn zombies. Remember how insanely slow their attack was?! I *hated* fighting those bastards!!!
The music... well, I like the music simply because it brings back memories. All the melodies are there and it's not hard to recognize the tunes from the original version. That being said, the new music *does* feel a lot different. It seems to be on a grander scale now. Two or three instruments have now become ten. And yes, it's all way more "light hearted" and "poppy". Ultimately, this does change the mood of the game... sort of. I say that because anyone who has played the original and loved it shouldn't lose the mood of the game based on the music alone (my opinon of course). Also, not being able to read any of the story unfolding before me, I'm forced to rely on my memories of the original version which naturally keeps the original mood intact for me.
I have yet to try the crystals that are supposed to be able to be used in conjunction with other attacks, but intend on trying them soon. Right before I quit, I tried taking on a sandowrm and three wasps (my party being at about level 17)... we got our butts kicked by that damned worm!!! We'll show him though, you'll see.
All in all, I'm happy with the remake, which doesn't surprise me in the least. I knew I'd like it before I played it and even after reading all the negative reviews it's recieved. Because everything else aside, it's still Phantasy Star; a game I've loved since I was freaking nine years old!

[Edit by zoothe on [TIME]1093145286[/TIME]]

It's easy to like a game if you can't read the horrible dialogue. :p
but anyone and everyone interested should send an e-mail to Conspiracy Games and tell them to bulk up the difficulty level a tad; maybe they'll listen... who knows?

And you believe that? They are not allowed to do that since they are not the makers of the game. They just translate.

Well, that's not necessarily true, translators sometimes do little tweake here and there to enhace playability, sometimes they actually enhace the game (well at least in their point of view), they get the sources after all. I just hope that the translator have the license to tweak and will improve the game, but maybe we'll not even see it, who knows.

I was thinking of Working Designs when I stated that. They do WAY more than just translate. Why can't Conspiracy?

I can agree with that, but I feel that any of the things they do that may be "too much", are acceptable considering all the cool things they do include. If not for them, when (if ever) would we have gotten to play Lunar?

[Edit by zoothe on [TIME]1081459078[/TIME]]

Hehe, I found a PS Thread with some "interesting" comments. Here's a sample:

Anything would help Phantasy Star II...that game was just brutal to play. I don't think anyone who's played it once or twice plans on ever playing it again. Hopefully it'll be a lot more bearable this time around. Personally, however, I'm looking forward to Phantasy Star IV. It's the first one I played, and really the only one that "blew my mind" for an old-school RPG.

here's the link for the whole thread if you want to check it out and laugh (like I did):
I don't see what's so funny about it. Just a bunch of idiots who can't bear a difficult game.
