Don't quote me on this if it comes down to it, but I think that out of the first three (I've not played PSIV), PSIII was most linear.
Although there are four separate endings, the actual paths through each generation are somewhat linear.
You cannot access many dungeons unless you have the correct characters, in Rhys' quest anyway.
MASS SPOILER ALERT - ALSO, WARNING OF ANNOYED RANT
You need Mieu to meet Lyle for the first time, who gives you a Sapphire which allows you to go to Aquatica, where you then head for Aridia to find Wren to go and fix the weather so you can meet Lyle and return to Aquatica so that the sea is unfrozen so that you can take the boat across to Cille and Shusoran where you then fight Lyle to get Lena...
END OF SPOILER
I think that PSI is least linear because there doesn't seem to be any force pushing you towards any of the locations. I've wandered around Dezolis for so long because I forgot what I was looking for and there seems to be no major pressing reason to get to anywhere.
PSII is relatively linear, because you can only access certain dungeons after you do certain things, eg Biosystems + Darum, Dams + flooding, Menobe, etc + meeting Noah. Still, you do get a choice of which of the new dungeons you wish to visit.
And you are directed about Motavia by your boss.

PSIII was the most linear. Forge used all of the points that I was going to use on this one.
PSIV is the least linear. There is so much in the game you can do or not do, i.e. getting items, Guild Missions, Climatrol/WeaponsPlant/Plate Center, ect.

A game with 4 endings can´t be linear. o.O
I consider a game linear when it has a storyline that forces you to go from point A to point B, from point B to point C and so on till the end. PS4 has the Hunters´ Guild quests that gives you the illusion that you are getting a detour from point A to point B, when you are really not doing anything to advance on the storyline: once you finish the side quest, you still have to go from point A to point B.
In PS1 you have certain items that are required to beat the game, but you are allowed to get them at any time in any order. In PS3 you have linearity mixed with non-linearity, as you have to follow certain sequences in each generation, but you are allwed to choose which storyline you will follow.
In PS2 all you can do is to choose which dams and dezorian towers you will go first. In PS4 you have that illusion of choosing your own way by taking the guild quests when you actually still have to follow a predetermined sequence in order to beat the game.

PSIV has a very good story so that you don't fell really forced to do something, all you have to do tipically is what you want to do in that moment.
For example, why in PS2 I cannot kill that man on the first bridge? Instead I have to go to rescue his daughter, only to see them kill each other? This is a lacking in story concept.

also in ps2 you can't miss any item ( important item) all nei weapon have to be rescued
in ps4 instead you have a good bunch of extra dungeons and secret stories ( like the wreck or daughter computer)
anyway quite all the rpg are most linear
of the fff serie only ff7 is quite nn linear ( like ps4 however , you have to reexplore same areas , forced by topic or for taking bonus or for uncovering secrets of the plot)

Linear is to me where the story pushes you to go from point A to B all the time, and you can't get off the track. It doesn't matter if you have to visit some places again, it's still forcing you to go from point A to B. You can't visit a new place until the story forces you to, or gives you the ability. Many games nowadays have a lot of side-quests, but that doesn't make them any less linear.
PSIV is the most linear of them all.

2 is more linear

Oh, come off it, Kars.
PS4 is the most linear of the series because, as Mono stated previously stated on this topic, the story is predetermined. It doesn't matter if you do the side-quests or not since it doesn't affect the main course of the storyline itself whatsoever!
I'll give you an example: Have you ever completed the Weather Control System on Dezolis? After that fiasco, did you notice that it didn't change the course of the storyline, not one bit? I now rest my case.

[Edit by ThePeaGuy on [TIME]1110295009[/TIME]]

Actually it's true that Ps2 is linear (I hadn't really noticed it though) but I thought PSIV to be linear as until the end you always see some new characters and you can't keep the old ones when they are not needed (I wish I could keep Rune or Demi).
Well I wouldn't be able to make a choice and say which is more linear. (probably not PSI hahaha that was great)

Linear-isms are the direct result of adding extra story. When the stories get more detailed, they force you to follow it along. It is a VERY RARE RPG that has an extensive and detailed story and great character developement, but is also non-linear. Some try but usually screw up.
(ever play chrono cross? you can leave that pebbles flintstone girl to die and ignore her at every turn, but at the end....oh, look! you miss her!)
As for the PS games, I think 4 is most linear. 1 ending, very little control when the characters stay and go (aside from death), you can not visit any place out of sequence. PS3 and 2 are not quite so bad as there are different endings in 3 and in 2 there are instances where you have multiple dungeons to do, but in whatever order you want (and almost constant control of your party arrangement).

The non-linearity in PSII is quite minimal. Chosing what dam or tower you go trough next is close to the linearity of PSIV's "Which Hunter's Guild mission I should I take next?".
So I'd actually call it a tie between PSII and PSIV.
So here's my list of non-linearity of PS games (first == most non-linear):
 • PSI
 • PSIII
 • Shared position: PSII and PSIV
I am NaN!

The problem with that comparison is that unlike the PSII dams, the PSIV Hunter's Guild missions are not mandatory.
