Phantasy Star 2 Genesis Hugh solo run

Postby HienTheBirdie » Thu Jun 04, 2026 1:59 pm

This is a copy paste of a similar topic on my GameFAQ account.

I watched solo runs in other RPGs after getting tired of Fire Emblem efficient runs which can be REALLY nitpicky about characters to use and when I got into Generation 2 in early June 2025 I was curious if this game had one too, I can find Rolf solo runs but none for the other character and I thought about starting with Rudo after I finish the Generation 2 file.

But somewhere around Roron dump I used Hugh’s Skill which was… REALLY powerful was when something flip inside me that I want to do a solo run with him first and do Rudo’s later instead and I do like Hugh when using him(though his remake’s character design and story in Text Adventure played a part too).

I will post a written article for Generation 2 but this is for the Genesis version though… I have a little backstory about that.

I recalled someone in the Phantasy Star Cave forum said that they saw someone else try Hugh and found it so aggravating to solo with him in the original game when trying to find solo runs for this game and after having a fun time with Nei’s in Generation 2, I thought what if I tried to solo with Hugh in the original game? He is worse than he was in Generation 2 and while I didn’t think he was as bad as many claims, can he beat the original game by himself?

The rule is that until he’s hired I have to make do with doing a Nei solo run based on how I seen someone do solo run with another party member if who you wanted to use is unavailable or if she finds it hard to manage, hire one other character(Rudo) but I must never train Rolf as he can’t ko himself.

But after that he must carry everything he is using by himself and try not to use Rolf or Nei to have extra trimates and carry the Nei gears himself in the end of the Nei gear trip for Lutz. (though I can have someone else carry those once that is finished)

I will also dump ALL of my money away until I only have the base 200 Meseta to force him to train himself and get his own gears, it’s fine if I have less than the amount but not more.

I will be using the Playstation 2 collection as that has an exp booster I can toggle if I need to train which I can turn off once I am not doing that and it doesn’t change enemy stats so I can do it all with base stats so let’s get to it, can the weakest character in the game stamp the robots he isn’t built for, get past Dark Falz’ possession and Motherbrain’s control by himself?

Though the other reason was to look at the gallery mode this port has…

Pre Hugh

All of the characters are nicknamed after Legend of Dragoon characters which I finished recently at that time but I will not use these names in this post.

Rolf gets named Dart cause he’s the lead plus they have a relatively similar backstory and good balanced stat.

I get cute kitty cat Nei with her insanely adorable field sprite to play with, I promptly toss all of Rolf’s equipment to make him frail and get Nei steel bars.

It takes awhile because enemies are not as aggressive in the original game as they are in Generation 2 but with that sorted, I trained Nei which makes her level up quicker with only herself around and I head for Arima to hire Rudo just in case.

Rudo is renamed Kongol(KONG because of the four letter limit) as a big silent mid 30s man with no magic who lost his family.

I would find it hard to manage the upper floors of Shuren compared to Generation 2 because of a bunch of factors.
1. Nei has lower stats than she did in the remake.
2. If all party members go to sleep it’s a game over.

I opted to hire Rudo to get this part over with as I don’t need to train her for Neifirst as I can actually use Hugh to fight her in this version of the game.

All difficulty goes down the drain during the early Biomonster phase with just one more character though Rudo falters a bit in the Biosystem Labs since guns does flat damage and Nei’s Ceramic Bar does massively upgraded damage.

In just two hours I finished three dungeons, dump all my money and hired Hugh, I made a mistake and forgot I had to revive Rolf to enter his house so I had 180 Meseta instead.

I had planned to hire him in January 11 which is Hahn’s birthday but family issues caused my family to rent another place for the first half of that month so I missed that deadline.

But when I returned and refreshed myself I resumed my run and hired a certain weak biomonster specialist…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EWTLLwiNNs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EWTLLwiNNs
I got wimpy little Hugh and renamed him, Shana(SHNA) after the wimpy magic focusing character that is just as hard to use.

I got Amy first though since I didn’t visit the house after getting Rudo and renamed her Meru a better magic using character that looks younger than her real age.

I knew of how bad his reputation is before playing the game, it was one of the reasons I decided to try him back in Generation 2 but I did use him in the original game because I was getting bored at the monotony compared to the remake and wanted to seek a challenge for early game.

With a weak college student on my hand, I got him another Scalpel with the money I had, which I was surprised this and the dagger are sold in Paseo in the original as I am too poor to buy a dagger and seek out some training.

I let Rolf be bitten by the last remaining enemy after Hugh deal with the others to minimize them attacking him while Nei heals him if he gets hit until Rolf goes down, I sacrificed her and let Hugh take all the XP and the run can properly start…

While it was reasonable enough with the flies and ants, the rattle snake spells doom if they paralyze Hugh as he struggles to run away and if you know why Sulfur is so powerful… he does miss a lot more than Nei does thanks to his terrible DEX stat though, it’s a rare time I wish he had his basic Biomonster attacking tech earlier, he has to rest in the hospital after every battle and save regularly so I don’t lost my progress at this point. Thankfully after he hits level 2 he was a lot more survivable.

I was more than glad to learn Gen to kill the rattlesnakes.

After some grinding, I seek out Arimaya and kept the scalpels as the difference with it and the dagger are minimal to train against slightly stronger enemies, compared to Gen 2, Gen seems a bit stronger, sometimes doing 25 damage instead of just 15-18, which is one of the few things I will say is better than his otherwise better remake counterpart.

The Ceramic knives look so tempting but they cost a lot of Meseta so I considered heading to Shuren with what I have and only consider if I am having a lot of trouble.

It does take a few tries though because the monsters on the upper floor can be quite aggressive, I had to leave the dungeon multiple times to keep the chests I opened since my other goal was to unlock every chest in the game.

Sagen is pretty good at this point, killing everything in Shuren in one shot but his terrible speed means he takes quite a lot of damage until I levelled him up, I opted to buy a shield to prop his defense up a bit.

After everything is looted I took to where the dead rascal is before declaring the dungeon finished.

Nido tower
I mainly trained near the tower without going inside it so I can have more monomates. He does die a few times to the higher tier enemies, by this point his Sagen spell no longer oneshot though it still wounds them.

The tower was relatively tough partly because of the rattlesnake that can put you to sleep and give a game over from being the sole person on the field, his luck is fairly good so he is dodgy to that but I still got a game over that way a few times.

Blasters are quite scary with their 20 damage and high speed plus Gen can’t kill them right away, thankfully they are rare in this tower

Biosystems lab

I opted not to go to Zema until I hit the basement to challenge myself despite him being hired at the point you can bumrush to that city.

This dungeon is very hard without the gears from Zema, I died a lot and opted to escape after every chest and it took three days even unlocking Vol from being so overlevelled.

Blasters are still a bit annoying but I opted to rely on Gifoi rather than Vol’s 60% hit rate as it cost less TP and one shots them.

I was really tempted to buy the Zema gears at some point but stuck to my guns and I made it, screaming with joy before getting the gears from Zema to deal with the stronger monsters in the basement but I wiped all the chests out.

Roron dump
It’s a bit tough to reach Kueri with wimpy college boy here as his laser knife output is somewhat mediocre and Sagen spell output is weaker than even that so I dropped my usage with it, it’s decent with a team but pretty bad TP burn on a solo run to use only that.
Kueri has a weapon I really want to use, the acid shot, it does a decent flat 20 damage per hit, the same as Sagen does.
Roron dump itself is a moderately hard but not as bad as the Biosystem lab though the encounter with slime messes was too much for frail Hugh even with Titanium gears so I game overed every now and then, I opted the same tactic of getting the chests then making a gateway.
I talk to the birdies and get myself a jet scooter to get something both controversial but will make the run a bit easier.

Uzo island
It’s not too bad to reach Piata despite the stronger enemies and I made it with Hugh’s fragile body intact without dying once.

I bought his ultimate body armour, the Ceramic Chest which is decent for now but will be mediocre by Dezo.

Because I never returned home after hiring Hugh which is not required to progress compared to Generation 2 I got a horde of new characters, Anna(Rose, who is actually very similar to Anna), Kain with the shorted Haschel(Hasc) for the quirky boisterious male.

But the biggest red herring is Shir who I would have nicknamed Miranda(Mira) but it’s Shir, who laughs at my face for attempting that.

The reason I say it’s controversial is because it requires taking out another character out of the house even if I don’t use her to say heal him or do any damage, just soaking XP to level 10, she did die a few time so I got myself a slight money burn but I’m so insanely rich from just supplying one character and revisiting dungeons multiple times it’s more like buying water.

I used the entrance of Roron dump, hoping to face Slime Mess but I encountered them only once.

Hugh did die before her once to the Slime Mess so I just resetted manually instead of retreating to revive him.

Once she hit level 10, I broke into the tower to steal a certain item… the Visiphone.

I’m not sure how ethical it is to use this thing in a solo run but I would have stolen it even if I was using Rolf or Rudo or heck a casual run because dying midway in this game’s massive dungeons especially to Vol, falling asleep or Dark Falz is no laughing joke and it’s only going to get worse from Uzo island onward.

I also stole a Fire Staff but that thankfully requires grinding juuuust in case for it’s free Foi.

The Uzo island is a hard cookie especially with how slow Hugh is and I started relying on Vol a few times, spamming the Visiphone but I made it even after running out of TP twice by using that so it’s not as bad as the Biosystem labs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0qRMRqJ5IE
Climatrol
Most of the Uzo enemies are in this dungeon so most of the same rules apply but with how many chests they are, I took many attempts not because he died but it’s just a massive dungeon.

The gears are useless as they are for Nei and I wasn’t having her deal with the boss but they are there to show I can 100% with him and I like him. But it’s also a great opportunity to grind him even if I spammed that phone many times in this dungeon.

When that was done, I revived both Rolf and Nei stockpiling them with hidapipes, just spamming the phone and using Resta on Rolf if he takes damage from the lava terrain.

To my irritation the hidapipe doesn’t work in this dungeon in the original game so I spammed the phone even more to make sure they don’t die which in Rolf’s case I found is not required in a later replay for spoilers that I will explain later.

But I made it easily without losing Hugh but this boss is a real challenge…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8Uzxw7PqNI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FNzwlTLK6U
Neifirst
Nei got pounced by an evil kitty real quickly as she’s not wearing any gears and is a bit underlevelled(Hugh is higher level than she is by that point) but that’s not where the difficulty starts.

The real difficulty is Hugh dealing with her without Shu or the equippable spells that cast Giresta and Deban as the latter are found AFTER killing her and the former requires Amy and I refuse to have any assistance to make it harder for myself.

But I bought two Ceramic shields to crank up his bulk while boxing his shoes and headgear to include more trimates since I figured he’d take massive damage with laser knives equipped and have the Fire staff in case he runs out of TP spamming Gen and Gifoi. I still opted to carry the Visiphone on Hugh instead of letting Rolf or Nei carry it.

I eventually settled in spamming the former, only using Gifoi once I run low on trimates.

While Neifirst does miss a lot if she tries to scratch him, I realize that despite grinding a lot… I still need to level up to get more bulk and TP, I chose to do that even if it means I am endgame level, using Piata to grind on easy.

Sadly for me those giant plant monster don’t drop as much XP as the Gen 2 ones does.

But even after learning Savolt I turned out to be less than ready so I trained til I learned Girester which I don’t think most people noticed but he can’t use it on the field… I know normally most people get the gears that cast it at this level but it does make healing with magic a bit tricky just a bit later on because of that for this run.

But after level 35… spamming Gen until I have a single page of Trimate, I swapped to Gifoi… she died!

I didn’t even use the Fire Staff so you can get by without using that with him, I screamed with joy when she died.

But alas the world gets flooded, biomonsters die so robots come and if you know anything about Hugh it means half his abilities can’t be used for this second third of the game.

But still can he handle the robots by himself without anyone by his side?

Some of the robot arc were in the Neifirst video so I will describe those first.
Control tower
I toss out the Fire Staff as I don’t plan to use it otherwise because a certain other item spell can be used…
I taught him music with the massive money he got from training.
The robot output is super situational using the laser knives, the skinny robots and the tiny ones take massive damage but the large Monster only takes 10 damage per hit which I knew I had to think about when doing the dams whether these weapons or the acid shots which do a flat 20 per hit is preferable.
It’s actually not terribly hard to deal with the robots, just drags at times, he does have to use Girester in battle because his doesn’t work in the field if not use regular rester for some spotted healing.
With that I got the four keys and went to the dams, if you know me, my favourite has always been…
I used the acid shots to do a consistent 40 damage per turn if I ever see the big robots.

Blue Dam
Yep this is the second to hardest dam but the treasures will be worth it for the rest of the run.
It was quite rough balancing his battle girester and his items, grabbing items and tossing out anything I don’t need.
Somehow, I still survived though and got the Crescent gear which is great free Girester healing in battle to undo damage and keep my Trimates for a longer duration.
I procured the Storm gear which is pretty neat as it hits all enemies for 30 damage while Gizan only hits a group but I decided to store it once I leave and only use it when I’m really desperate.
I got my other coveted prize, the snow crown! It will be very useful in Dezoris in particular with wet tissue paper Hugh even if he has to take the full brunt for his first turn because of his terrible speed.
With that it’s not very hard once I got those items and the blue dam is wiped out.

https://youtu.be/Btp10MAepIE
I took that to seek myself a challenge since a lot of large robots reside in it.
It can be quite tedious as battle drags out and I need to calculate his HP to the fast robots so I can heal on time but I managed without dying once.

https://youtu.be/Btp10MAepIE
Yellow Dam
Not much to comment but I died once from being paralyzed by the police robot and failing to escape.
But the real thing to comment was about the Amber Robe, an armour only Hugh can equip.
It’s sounds stupid to equip it because it’s weaker than the Titanium chest but hear me out on this.
His defense is never going to be good without shields(and I plan not to use them to use weapons), he mainly relies on his(decently high) HP to survive plus the inventory limit means I want to have more room for Trimates no matter how small so this has the added bonus of taking up less space.

Red Dam
This dam is easy even with the laser knives, I survived those robots at the end just fine, got thrown in jail and died except I didn’t because I got salvaged by Tyler who request Rol- Hugh to go to Dezoris.

I was so overlevelled trying to beat Neifirst I only levelled up once or twice during the entire robot phase. To be honest it’s not terribly hard, just drags on sometimes looping between using the Amber robe and attacking or deciding between the Acid shot and Laser knives. As a whole it was easier than it was in Gen 2 where he sometimes risk nearly dying to the faster robots.

https://youtu.be/CZ7IG0gRns0
Skure Tunnel
Knowing Biomonsters will return, I took the antidotes I stored out of the stash to mix between the trimates.
Compared to Gen 2, as long as I use the Snow Crown it’s fairly easy even without the Laconian armours, having Savolt with a higher hit rate than the remake is also nice, robots are as tediously dragged out though.
I quickly grab the Mogic cap to get discounts for items.

Dezorian towns
I cheer that Aukbar has the Laconian Mace/Scale and bought a pair at top speed for the massive power boost against reasonably squishy enemies, these weapons are actually slightly worse offensively than the Laser Knives on Gen 2 due to having half their listed values.
Something I found on my casual run is that Rolf NEEDS to be alive to talk to the Dezorians, thankfully the cloning lady from Motavia resides in this planet and 20 Meseta is chump change plus he’s base level so as long as I make sure one enemy survives...
When all of that is finished and I bought the boots and headgear, I headed for the crevice.

https://youtu.be/hDf3w7VamzE
Crevice
I remember the layout on Gen 2 for the most part so it was easy, Volt was used against them mammoths and birds, it was a very easy trip, EASIER than in Gen 2. Now if you think that counterpart of his suck though… oh you wait…
Sadly for Hugh he can’t enter the Esper Palace without Rolf alive as the guards block the way, I found that I need him alive solely to get them to unblock the door on a retry but for this run, I rush back to the Aukbar revive him, spam the Visiphone to avoid fighting even once and wake up Lutz before killing off Rolf in the first battle after doing so.

Naval
Yeah after what I said about Skure and Crevice? Well this is where things turn itself into a yoyo between laughably effortless to total pain.
It’s a gamble facing some of the demons and the dragons since they are all so fast compared to how slow he is, he has to take the full force, if Savolt doesn’t work… my game over started racking up again.
This is where his Sulfur limit break allows him to BLOCK some of the damage and his much higher HP (though I think this Hugh was a bit below average HP too from a chart I saw) can buffer him plus he was just a bit fast enough he can sometimes activate Sulfur without taking another hit.
The much smaller item limit is also an issue that forced me to visit Naval twice which meant going through the tedious tunnel twice as well.
Whenver I returned to town with a new Newgear, I sent to Rolf to carry them since you can’t put them in storage and I don’t feel like taking the others out of the house.
Still being the torture lover, I am after Naval I decided to visit…

https://youtu.be/OiFTu8k5S4A
For most of it I visited Phantasy Star Cave’s images to see how the place is layout and for the most part I did procure what I want except for one last item which I relented and used a written guide to get a Laconian mace to promptly drop.
Ikuto is never easy, even Nei struggled in Gen 2 with the Animal Claw, there’s a particular trio of swords that are super-fast and aggressive, there are times Hugh can just lose all his HP without doing a single action to them if he’s unlucky. I will go on about Gen 2’s but I want to save it for when I write a journal for THAT run but it’s not much better. There’s another sword that can cast Volt which I think activated once.
This is one of the few places it feels equal between both ports at least with the trio of swords.

https://youtu.be/Q5-SnUpuzTc
Guaron
The fire demons hurts to look at with their blinking animation, I had to shut my eyes a few times unless I hear the damage sound alarm to check on Hugh since I decided to attack them despite being so tanky to save Savolt on the dragons.
Overall it’s okay minus the dragons.

Menobe
It’s also not too hard minus the shadow demons which are very fast in the Genesis version and he can die if he whiff Savolt too much.
With everything gathered, I actually transferred all the Neigears to Hugh as a challenge, bought a Laconian shield and retrieved the Storm gear for Dark Falz.

https://youtu.be/RlF7fSNBVbs
To my surprise Rolf is not required to be alive at any point for the original game, Lutz even address Hugh when asking about visiting the spaceship.
The enemies vary wildly in difficulty, usually they are pretty easy to use the snow crown trick and slap them with the scale, other times they are… dragons.
No treasure chest so my focus was to get to Dark Falz…
Dark Falz is a NIGHTMARE.

https://youtu.be/LawkTYfFmLU
Skip to the timestamp on my description if you only want to see me win legit and beware of volume if you use headset during then.
I did not show all of my recording since it’s mostly the exact same thing and I only kept my more notable one, this took a month to record and I actually took a break for a week around the third week.
The boss fight actually lagged on the emulator so I had to speed it up the whole time to fight more often.
The two shields tactic is… useless, I noticed he did the same amount of damage he did on my casual run before the snowcrown plus Amy’s Sashu activated and took them off to use the scales instead to see the exact same damage.
Dark Falz does flat damage.
I tried a single scale as you can’t double attack when possessed only to find he skips every other turn attacking so it meant he was actually swapping hands between each turn so I had to carry two to keep attacking at the price of trimate supplies, I tried the storm gear tactic too with no weapons once his TP ran dry trying to use Gifoi, Gigra and Gen which the latter actually works on him in this version.
I even took his shoes and headgear off for more trimates.
And I also sent him to Ikuto to get to level 50 which also racks up my death counter.
I was tempted to hire Rudo and Amy as buffer and use Shu but ultimate didn’t train them.
I actually chose to reset the same off screen with an alternate save to try to get Hugh as much HP as possible.
It’s still the same thing except it takes more turns before I need to use an item.
In frustration I actually save stated to see if it’s possible at all if he never loses control.
But I was still guilty about that so after a few days I did return, I sent the Amber Robe to Rolf tried again and…
I won… I was so excited, I just screamed uncontrollably!
That took almost 900/882 deaths trying and trying and trying again, my death counter elsewhere were just 164 which is still higher than his death to Dark Falz in Gen 2, I had to take a rest for a week before I decide to end the game.

Motherbrain
Refreshed from that long long torture I walk back to the Crevice, challenging myself by not taking anything from Rolf with not a single equipment but the Storm Gear and a few remaining Trimates, I made it with no supply and very little TP, I decided to repurchase my Acid Shots back in Kueri, restock on Trimates, return the Storm Gear to the storeroom and retrieve my Amber Robe, boots and headgears for the endgame.
It was surprisingly easy to get back to where Dark Falz was, Hugh didn’t even die once but I’m not sure if it’s from the fact he has 410 HP vs 270 HP on my last attempt.
And without any death still, I made it to where Motherbrain is with one lonely biologist holding a pair of acidic guns to her face.
It also lags in this boss fight but I knew what to do, surviving a jolt to the face, Hugh waves the snow crown to get damage low enough the robe can heal him. All I did was alternate between shooting her and healing him with the robe.
After about 20 minutes Motherbrain died without much effort, by far an easy boss.
With that Rolf got revived and we chat with the Earthmen, sending a team of six underpowered people, four of them at level 1 to fight with Hugh who is maxed out in charge. (the ending still has the normal order just kidding)
With that I have finished the run and it is possible for a wimpy 19 year old boy to save Algol by himself if you are willing to steal the Visiphone as long as Shir doesn’t provide help in battle.

Overall I died over 1058 times in total.

How do I feel about this run?
It’s a wild ride to put things lightly, he’s VERY weak early on using mostly wimpy knives and his Gen spells do fairly low damage after awhile, it takes a lot of grinding because his XP rate is pretty slow and his speed means he has to take hits a lot the entire game, something his Gen 2 counterpart can to eventually outrun.
His Volt spells are actually really good particularly Savolt which has a decent hitrate and made levelling him up for Neifirst relatively easy once he had it.
Ironically it was when the robots take over is when the challenge actually goes down especially against robots, particularly once he got the items that cast Girester and the Snow Crown to massive reduce damage for most battles.
But it’s the Nei dungeons when it gets very erratic, usually it’s pretty easy and he does surprisingly massive damage with the Laconian scale and the crown reduces damage to laughable levels but some of the enemies found in them can easily kill him if Savolt doesn’t activate particularly in Ikuto where he can just flat out die before doing a single action. There is never a point his speed is high enough to go before a majority of enemies even when maxed out.
Dark Falz was a nightmare without Sulfur as a reprieve despite having 9k less HP not helped by the fact he always go before Hugh when the opposite is true in Gen 2, the smaller inventory cap didn’t help.
Overall it’s very… interesting to say the least, I feel satisfied as a whole to make this run and prove even the worst character in 2 can finish this game without anyone to help him minus stealing the Visiphone.
Hugh is… interesting in general, he’s got a lot of flaws, terrible speed, worse accuracy than is usual, stuck using Savolt late game at times, terrible start but he can do just a bit of everything even if not as good as Rolf and Savolt can kill late-game enemies FAST if it works. I do like him for that last part to kill the enemies in Dezoris at the very least, Gen 2 Hugh is still better in generally but I think he’s overlooked even in the original game and does have a lot of merit to train him if you don’t mind his minimum effort early on.

I’m not sure if I want to do solo runs with the other seven(though Nei’s has to end at Neifirst) in the original game as I plan to focus on Gen 2 for now but I will think about it for this and the Neuman revolution mod.
