GhaleonUnlimited's PSIV Re-Translation

Postby thepeaguy83 » Tue Aug 18, 2020 6:17 pm

A re-translation of the game has been released this year. It fixes all the dialogue and includes enemies that were omitted from the official localisation.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post ROM links here, but google GhaleonUnlimited; I'm sure you'll find the rom easily.

Has anyone played this yet? If you have, then what's your overall verdict?

Oh hey, I post on the PS Cave discord every day, but I was searching for PS fonts and realized I should check the forums more often, haha.

Did you have any questions about the patch?

Obviously I'm biased, but I can assure you that hundreds of hours of writing, editing, and replaying went into the patch, as well as the PS Lore I've been into (thanks largely to the Cave) since years and years ago.

I've had a lot of great user feedback from RHDN, especially on distilling what I now call the "Purist" patch, which minimizes the NPC asides and color to the story that I wrote, pretty much leaving an extensively edited script and additional story elements.

I always loved Working Designs's style, so that's the version I prefer. There's no pop-culture jokes or anything, it's just additional comments here and there.

I'm finally starting a Let's Play Director's Commentary this week if I can.

A fellow online who reviews retrogame fanhacks did a short review of my PSIV retransalation (I'm making a new word) if that's helpful: https://kainetertainment.home.blog/2020/06/20/phantasy-star-generation-4-a-relocalization-hack/

The retranslation aspect is from TCRF's analysis https://tcrf.net/Proto:Phantasy_Star_IV:_The_End_of_the_Millenniumof the more literal prototype ROMs and their own retranslation, where given, and my own (extremely limited) understanding of Japanese. The relocalization part is just me as a writer and editor (as well as my editor friend's) wanting the dialog to read as a native English speaker would say.

I also develop certain characters' relationships more and add lore from the Compendium that for some reason isn't in the game.

I hope that helps. I always tell people just play up to getting Rune and see if you like it!

Did you have any questions on it? You can always @ me on the Discord too. Thanks for being interested!

I haven't played it yet, but I like what I've seen thus far on youtube.

I've seen posts where you've been criticised for having a Working Designs form of localisation - like that's a bad thing.

What's wrong with adding a bit of life to the original script? Go learn Japanese if you guys are purists with video gaming storytelling, haha.

I dunno if Phantasy Star II is a favourite of yours, but if you could improve upon Naflign's fan translation, that'd be great.

This looks very good.
Is there a way to apply the translation to play it with STEAM sega classics?
