Accuracy of Translation For PS Gen 1

Postby AtelierAlchemist » Wed Oct 28, 2015 5:35 am

Hello, I'm new here so hopefully nobody bites my head off too much for this question.

I was just wondering exactly how accurate are the translation for PS Generation 1? I know the prologue was supposedly the only major change but what about specific names. For instance, in the Japanese version was the Torua Gate called Torua gate or just the Baya Malay Pass? I ask this because I've seen on the walkthrough it was referred to as Baya Malay Pass rather than Torua Gate, for example.

Anyways that's my first question in regards to PS Gen 1. Hope it's not too much of a stupid one.

Your question is not stupid at all. Maybe Kyence will give you a more detailled answer, but from what I know, Kyence made her translation the hard way : she located every single string of text in the files of the game, and replaced each japanese character by a latin one, so as the strings lenghts are exactly the same.

English being much more verbose than Japanese (or rather, a Japanese character is in itself more or less a word, which is almost never the case with a single letter), she had to simplify her text a lot, while keeping the general sense. It must have been very difficult to do everytime.

Also, it is very possible then she decided, for some names, to use the original game's translation.

One more question.

Were any additional sprites/graphics added in or has everything been kept the same as the Japanese version?

No additional sprites, but when a graphics showed Japanese texts, Kyence altered it with English translation. In some occurence, she removed japanese text without translating, because the text wasn't really useful (press button to see next page) and an English translation couldn't fit in the space the Japanese text occupped.

I'm trying to restore those texts because since, I learnt how to increase the size of a graphical object.
