I realized something today...

Postby etony33 » Fri Sep 18, 2015 6:34 pm

I have been playing Final Fantasy VII over the last few days. Now, when Aeris...(if you haven't played FFVII and don't want something to be spoiled, don't read on, although I am almost certain everyone knows about this)...was done in by Sephiroth, it was a very emotional, tear jerking moment for most people, though it didn't really affect me. I realized why today...

A woman, who is very different and unique from everyone else, wants to go help the protagonist. The protagonist doesn't want to let her, saying he doesn't want to put her in danger, but she insists. She - as well as an antagonist with similar powers and a similar makeup - are of great interest to an evil agency who runs the government. She really grows on the player as the game goes on, and more than proves her worth in battle. Eventually, she comes face to face with the antagonist with similar powers, and, selflessly, knowing she has to die, sacrifices herself and is brutally slain in order to help save humanity.

I realized I had already seen it before! I was four and cried my little eyes out after Nei's battle with Neifirst.

Well, they maybe borrowed ideas from it, but the story is very different...although, a version of PS2 where Neifirst is not defeated, but instead goes nuts and wreaks havoc to the point where Rolf and the Earthmen have to work together to destroy her (while Mother Brain was still trying to impede Rolf), and Neifirst ends up being the final boss battle after Dark Force, Mother Brain, and the Earthmen are all defeated...heh, that would be really interesting.

They took the idea of killing a main character off in a game from Phantasy Star 2, FFIV they killed Tellah.
FFV they did it with Galuf, FFVI they did it with Shadow but you can choose to save him and then in FFVII Aeris gets killed.
So in a way Sega killed a main character off first with Phantasy Star 2.

Square Enix has had a bad habit of ripping things off over the years. Some of their most blatant plagiarism was taking elements of Lunar: The Silver Star and incorporating them into Chrono Trigger.

You go to a floating city full of mages, but are thrown in jail by the city's ruler and penultimate boss of the game before her blue haired daughter saves you. You somewhat foil her plans to enable the final boss of the game to reach his full potential of power after the blue haired daughter lets you out of jail, but the final boss of the game ends up destroying the floating city anyway (after the penultimate boss is safely away). Oh, and there's an inventor named Taben in the game.

There are other things too that I can't think of at the moment.
