Kyra isn't bad, but she's basically just extra. Her healing techniques are shared by Rika for the most part (and Raja does them better). Her ability to hit multiple enemies is shared by Wren. She's not a bad character by any means, but she isn't really necessary.

Amy, on the other hand, is so much better at healing than anyone else. With some of the characters (Hugh, Shir) not being very good, and Nei...not being available at certain times during the game, Amy's almost a must. Rolf/Rudo/Amy/Kain or Anna is probably the most versatile party.

All true, but Kyra is still good at what she does. From the moment she joins she is great and for me an auto selection from then on. He interactions with Rune are great fun too.

Amy joins just in time for teh Bio Systems Lab and god is she weak. I'm terrified of any enemy hitting her as they will probably kill her. And more often enough they do. She does gain the first 5 levels quickly, but takes a long time to get to lvl 10, thus stays weak for far too long. her healing is good, but most of her healing spells will be used on herself and you will be having to retreat a lot just to rez her.

When Anna joins, I replace Amy right away as you have Nei to heal and dimates a plenty. The damage Anna does is far more useful.

Does this not go for every character after Rudo, though? You need to grind a bit to get any and all of them up to snuff. Amy is no exception.

It's close, but I still give Amy the edge.
