I remember noting many years ago, that the character portraits in Phantasy Star II can be put side by side, and that the background then fits together. I don't remember seeing this, so I decided yesterday night to recreate the image. Rudo and Kain are too broad shouldered to fit, so I had to expand their portraits a little into their respective neighbours'.

I'm happy with the edit to Kain's portraitm but not really with Rudo's, so if anyone else wants to have a go, here is the original:

I made three more images, one where I removed the background:

another, where I added the details to shoulders without the background:

For the last one I was very conservative and didn't add any details I couldn't motivate from the original. If you superimpose the portraits with the background you should get the original image -- unless I've made a mistake somewhere.

Nice work!

This has been known for quite some time, though, and I created my own image many years back. But I didn't go to the length you did.

Rolf's background doesn't fit with the others. This is because Rolf is standing with his back to the door, while the others are already in his apartment. I decided to give him the same treatment anyway:

Tanks! Yeah, it's pretty obvious -- I think it was discovered already back in the PSDB-days, but as I wrote, I couldn't find pictures of it online. As a reflection, I think it is a very nice touch from the creators, especially combined with Rolf's background not fitting. A very small piece of visual storytelling, that is evidence of an impressive attention to detail!

When looking at the portraits again, it strikes me, that the men all have considerably smaller heads!
From this perspective, even though it does look like Kain is butting in, it seems more motivated to let Anna/Amia have her shoulder in front:
