Phantasy Star 3 Leveling guide

So I was bored a few days ago and decided to play Phantasy Star 3.

I finished Rhys quest very quickly and was wondering what else to do with him, before I moved to generation 2.

As I was looking over the party, I couldn't help but wonder "just how strong do they all get?"

So I am wondering, does Rhys gain HP at a fixed rate or is he like Rolf? And what is his level max and how strong does he get?

At lvl 18 He really didn't get all that much stronger really.

Rhys's maximum level is 41. He gains stats in the same way Rolf does (that is, random based on an average), but doesn't get bigger stat gains every five levels.

I am still curious about, just how strong Rhys gets. Would Nial kill him in one hit? Maybe Adan or Aron would?

So I decided to test it out.

By gaining lvl 2 twenty times in different fights, I wanted to see just how much Rhys gained. The results were very interesting.

Rhys base stats are:

HP - 30 I think this is the most HP from a beginning character in any Phantasy Star. Alis has 16HP, I think Rolf had 19HP? and Chaz has 25HP. So in a lvl 1 fight Rhys would win....Unless Rolf uses Foi...which he would...
TP - 0 Not applicable as he is Orikan or however you spell his name. I always voted Laya. Her pro monster bill was better then his pro cyborg bill.
Speed - 8
Damage - 8
Defence - 7
Intelligence - 6 He isn't very bright lol.
Stamina - 15 You can tell he is a tank.
Luck - 10
Skill - 5

This is with nothing equipped btw

Rhys gains anywhere between 15 to 20 points. Allocated between all his stats.

Best Rhys lvl 2
HP - 34 (+4)
TP - 0
Speed - 11 (+3)
Damage - 11 (+3)
Defence - 10 (+3)
Intelligence - 7 (+1)
Stamina - 17 (+2)
Luck - 14 (+4)
Skill - 8 (+3)

But he will never gain all of that as the max points he can get is 20.

So my point (yes I do have one) is that Rhys starts strong, but doesn't really get any stronger throughout his quest. Unlike Rolf, Alis and Chaz who become monsters.

That is rather odd... if the game gives him 23 points to boost his stats, but only recognizes 20 points, then 3 of those points should be removed, reducing the respective stat(s) as well.

Rhys can only gain 20 points added to his stats on lvl 2. eg

The best level I gained with Rhys

5th attempt
HP +4
Spd +2
Dmg +2
Def +3
Int +1
Sta +2
Luck +3
Ski +3
For a total of 20 points added to his stats.

My worst level was:
4th Attempt
HP +2
Spe +2
Dmg +2
Def +2
Int +1
Sta +1
Luck +4
Ski +1

For 15 points. There is one stat in which you can get a +0 to Intelligence.

Level 3 was quite a bit different to 2.

For the most part Rhys gain between 17 and 20 points. But out of the 20 attempts I made, he had 2 very strange level gains:

6th attempt
HP +4
Spe +2
Dmg +3
Def +2
Int +3
Sta +2
Luck +3
Ski +3

For 22 points! It did not happen again nor did I ever gain 21 points.

The other:
10th attempt
HP +2
Spe +2
Dmg +2
Def +2
Int +3
Sta +1
Luck +2
Ski +2

For 16 points! It also never repeated as 17 was the lowest it went (5 times)

So I guess that he game does register and recognize any points over the max of 20, just that it's so rare when it happens that players think it doesn't go above 20.
