Sonic's Genesis Collection 360

Postby Nate556 » Thu Jun 04, 2009 2:56 am

Hello everyone. Lately, I've been thinking about getting this for my 360, mostly because it has Phantasy Star(s) 2 3 and 4. I want to play them without having the small glitches and errors that virtually ALL emulators have. I asked this before on a thread, but I decided to just go ahead and make a thread about it.
Of course, there are other games on it I like too, like Shining Force. I'm not big on action games. They are fun, but I like to play them with someone else. I get bored with them playing solo.
So, I was wondering, how are the games on that system ? Do they have the exact same graphics and sounds as they had on the Genesis ? Have any errors been fixed, or is it pretty much just a copy from the cart ?
I am pretty much looking for some first-hand testimony from people who have got this and played it.
Any info or advice would be nice.
Nathan.

KEGA Fusion v3.61 runs all 4 Phantasy Star games flawlessly.

Sonic's UGC looks like arse compared to KEGA...

Sonic's Genesis Collection is a lazy job by Digital Eclipse (as usual). No errors fixed. Crappy scaler. It's just a collection of ROMs.

The PS2 Genesis Collection would be cheaper if you must have the games emulated on a console.

I havnt seen one for the PS2, but I'll keep my eyes out.
The big thing is, I can't haul my computer to my room and play in a relaxed position there. If i stretch out here in my computer chair, body parts start to fall asleep on me and it's horrible. I hate when say, a leg or an arm doesn't move when it should.
I've never found a perfect emulation, they all have tiny little flaws. For example, there is this horizontal squiggly line that is really hard to see that moves up and down as I move around. But... thanks for the tip on that Ps2 thing, if it can save money I'm all for it.

That horizontal squiggly line you're seeing is not a bug. It's because the refresh rate of the game is slower than your monitor's. The line you're seeing is the up-to-date portion, but because the rest of the screen is not up-to-date, to us it seems like that line is.

vsync = on
filtered = on

your monitor refresh rate needs to be 60hz or higher.
many 60hz monitors are actually only 59hz! that messes up 60fps emulation big time :?

emulators (KEGA) and their games can be played directly from USB stick, very portable :D

Ohh... learn something new every day, thanks for the info guys.
Still doesn't solve the playing in my room thing, but it does take away my complaints about emulators.

I have no problem with the PSP Genesis Collection. I haven't really noticed anything to complain about. Digital Eclipse I think does a good job with these classic game collections. They also developed all the Capcom Collections for the PS2, Xbox and PSP, and they did a great job with those, and they developed the Midway collections too.

They do a fairly slapdash job. For instance, they dropped the 'Lock-On' games from the PS3/360 Genesis Collections because they claimed it would take too much time. Several people with programming knowledge willingly stepped up and pointed out that all that is required for Lock-On is a single line of code that loads the two ROMs together.

That and, as mentioned, the scaler being used really is horrid. I mean, in 2009 on more advanced machinery, you'd think we could get some HQ4x love since I've been running that family of filters on freeware since...err, 2003 or so?

Excuse me, coming through... Reposting the sole lost post from this thread:

I have PSII on cart, the 360 Sega collection, emulator and on Xbox Live. The flawed music really stands out as early as Shure (the song is "Advanced"). It is nearly impossible to hear the bass line without the cart or a very expensive stereo system.

Come to think of it, I do recall ONE problem. In Golden Axe, when Tyris gets killed, it plays the wrong PCM sample. It plays a PCM of one of the male enemies dying instead of hers.

I played the Playstation 2 Genesis collection on my PS3, and Phantasy Star IV gave me all kinds of audio glitches. Some of the sound effects just didn't sound right compared to what I remembered from the cartridge (which has been my experience with emulators), but the game also seemed to be incapable of stopping music without going to another song. For example, when I killed Zio and he started disintegrating, it was still playing 'Laughter' under the explosion sound effect, rather than just the sound effect. The same thing happens in the sound test mode.

I don't know if this is a problem with the game itself or the fact that I'm playing on my PS3. It's the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle and it usually plays legacy games fine, save for the occasional missing texture. Until I'm convinced to the contrary, I'll just chalk it up to a lazy port.

I also found the LaShiec battle to be ludicrously easy on this playthrough, since he never used Anothergate. I may have just gotten lucky with the game's randomness, who knows.

Well, I'll be damned... There IS a PSP version?

What games are in it?

I'm curious, although PicoDrive (Genesis emulator on the PSP) plays the games I like VERY well. I can't complain.
