Some Curious Questions on Phantasy Star III

Postby Ryukin » Fri Mar 27, 2009 5:51 pm

Well I've been trying to figure out some of the backstory for Phantasy Star III half outta curiousity, and half outta interest in creating a remake/fan game. If anyone could give me a hand on what may have happened during that time period by answering any of the questions or providing any additional details please let me know.

1. How did Lune/Alair/Siren get stranded on the moons I read the
fanfiction and websites and some say they were sent there as fail safes in case Orakio and Laya failed their mission, others say they were sealed there, and still others say Siren himself aided Orakio in battle with Dark force (which is impossible b/c he wouldn't resent Layans and wouldn't have been sealed by Laya on the moon after the battle).

2. I forgot exactly what happens to Rulkarir, I know his parents are killed by Layans during the war, and he becomes resentful, I just need some backstory on what he does in the war before that time ,and after I remember he is sealed in a location, I assume Laya and Orakio realize that he is manipulated so they seal him off.

3. In regards to question #1 why would they seal Lune/Alair/Siren? Was it to stop the fighting were the fighters being influenced by Dark Force and there was no rationalizing with them, did Laya and Orakio banish them before they moved the moons together as a group, or was it all part of a plan where they sent the people to the stations and then moved them. Were they actually influenced by Dark Force or would they just not have believed their commanders wishes that Laya or Orakio was not the enemy and their was a darker force.

- This is made present when Siren/Lune says they were banished by Laya/Orakio to the moon perhaps Laya and Orakio conjured up a plan to make them think that or maybe they were banished in a battle somehow, and the moons were moved before hand. In addition I am well aware that the only person who actually knows anything may have been Miun but she was damaged as Siren appologizes for hunting down the Layans and realizes that there was a far greater force "The True Evil" that existed that he found on Sage's Isle.

4. Did Dark Force take a human presence like that of Seth in Phantasy Star IV or did he just influence peoples dreams like with Lyle when seeking out Maya, he was the catalyst of the battle but how exactly did he spark the battle. I assume it was shortly after the ship left and he used fear of another world destruction to inspire the people to wipe out those different from them.

5. Ryan's background- Ryan is a dragon knight, so I wanted to know a little more about his background where he's from maybe he was a part of Lune's army until Lune betrayed him. Did Lune send him to rescue Thea or did he just happen to be there rescue her and get her stolen from him by Lune who was looking for a wife. Ryan is mysterious and I'd love more backstory

6. I am going to elaborate more on the androids backstories Miun and Siren obviously during the war and there after but more importantly on Mieu and Wren. Why they are where they are. How they got their. Their roles in the war, or lack there of (Question of how much they actually influenced the war). Why the weather is messed up and why Wren is waiting for someone else to fix it, does he not know or is there something else.

7. Expanding more on Lena and Rhys relationship I was trying to figure out a way to do this, I figured I'd have Npc's mention it about the princess of Satera and a flashback of them hanging out as children. Also I'd throw in a few cut scenes where they developed some feelings about each other. Also would Rhys choice to marry her be out of love or obligation to the thrown or both. I've read some fanfiction about this and am looking for more backstory.

8. Why the second generation characters marry who they do. For Ayn, Thea may be easy he may have grown up with her and have taken a liking to her but the rest of the characters require a lot more depth. Is Ayn marrying Sari because he falls in love with her or that he feels obligated to make up for his fathers abandonment of the country, how exactly does he fall in love with her. Thats a tough one for me since Sari is a short lived party member and seems to hate Ayn. Secondly Laya and Alair, I was gonna have Nial and Alair spend a cut scene or two together after they are rescued developing some sort of relationship where Alair see's the type of man Nial is and maybe run into on Dalha before encountering Lune to further strengthen their ties, but Why Laya other than to just stop the hatred between the two. I am requesting help on why the second generation characters fall in love with the people they do.

9. I need a way to diversify the 3rd generations, they are essentially the same quest with different people minus one or two steps. I was thinking of adding additional quests and tasks for each person depending who they are, however I am a little unsure on what to add for each 3rd generation person since each one starts under different circumstances, only thing I could think of was sending Crys to the weather station to check out why the earthquakes appear. I was wondering what the 3rd generation characters were like and how their quests could've differed

10. Expand on character development, this meant alot of extra cut scenes where the characters would be talking more, explain more backstory on each character and why they do what they do, I have this somewhat covered but if anyone has any insight please let me know.

11. Finally it might've been mentioned in game I havent played the 3rd generation in awhile I've been diving through the first and second ones, but why do you need to gather the legendary weapons again. Especially why is it necessary to gather Orakio's sword and unseal Dark Force. Is the goal to defeat him once and for all because he is still at large and causing problems for people like Rulkarir and still has some influence, such as making Lyle kidnap Maya, or having Alair thrown in prison or any other events or is there another reason I am completely missing.

12. More back story on Lune and Alair, what were they like during the war, I assume they were both pretty power hungry and gungho but as time passed Alair became more relaxed. How did this change occur.

13. How the conflicts were resolved in alternate time lines. How did Sari and the Orakian's deal with Lune if you choose to marry Maia and not Lena. Or how was Siren finally stopped, I know he did a damn fine job at killing them all but there were still some Layan's. Some events that might have transpired that ended the war. Example Lune or Ryan&Thea could've dealt with Siren and then perhaps after kidnapping Thea from Ryan Lune could've lost interest learning all Orakians and Layans weren't still at war and could've grown depressed. Or he could've lost Thea in battle as she tried to protect Ryan against Lune and lost his will to fight then. Any other theories I'd gladly buy into. Also if your playing as Nial what happens to Siren? This one I don't really have as much of a plan for does some other mysterious Layan ward him off perhaps Maya's other son, does Thea somehow manage to deal with him with Lyles help. It's assumed he devastates the Layan clans to a degree and that he has free reign of the Alisa III because in generation III he ends up on sage isle and many other places. So how exactly does he transition from massacring all Layan's to stopping. The only theory is that during his conquest he stumbles on Sage Isle or some other location where he learns the truth of whats going on and becomes disheartened in his quest. Again any suggestions let me know

12. Why certain thing happened differently in certain time lines, for example if you marry Maia the town where you find Thea is decimated and taken over by Androids, however if you come with one of Nial's children the town is completely fine.

Both Siren and Lune said they were banished by Orakio and Laya, respectively. That's all we know.

I would guess that they were banished by Orakio and Laya together in an attempt to stop most of the war. Remember that two gemstones are needed to move the moons in the first generation. One gemstone is held by an Orakian family close to where Orakio's descendants live, and the other is held by a Layan family close to where it is thought the Layan family lived.

Of course, it could be that the two gemstones were needed because the two moons needed to be moved, and only one would be needed for each moon.

I'm not sure why they sealed the two generals away instead of trying to reason with them. It's possible the hate was too deep, but then again, during the game they come to their senses easily enough.

There isn't much about Rulakir. His family was killed in the war, and he sold his soul to Dark Force.

I think the human form was a one-time thing for PSIV, because two Dark Force entities had already been defeated.

The Compendium says that Dark Force "deluded" Laya's heart, causing her to start the war. Orakio took a stand. In the end Laya realised she was being used, and confronted Dark Force together with Orakio.

Ryan is very mysterious indeed. That he's a dragon knight is possible, but not certain.

Mieu and Shirren were not around during the war. They were built later.
why do you need to gather the legendary weapons again

Presumably because only those have the power to defeat Dark Force.

1 and 3- When both Lune and Siren woke up in the second generation, they imediatly waged war against their rival clans. It seemed that they thought they were still in the middle of the orakian-layan wars. So I assume they were banished to the sattelite moons by Orakio and Laya themselves, and deliberately frozen there, so they would have enough time to concentrate on Dark Force. That's what I figured out.

4- I believe in something like a wide range "black energy wave" sort of. I always thought of Dark Force acting in a more spiritual than in a physical way (maybe dreams, hateful feelings and thoughts, but, more importantly, in a way no one could figure out their real source).

6- The cyborgs seemed to act only by previous programing. Mieu was standing in the middle of Landen Dome for a thousand years - others had seen here there before Rhys. There is not much point besides she was programed to stay there, or recieved a strict order that her behavioural program forbade her to do anything else until an orakian prince came after her. Wren could be the same thing, waiting patiently in Aridia until this orakian guy came and brough his over the satelite control.

Despite they being "cyborgs" and not mere androids (which implies they have organic bits, probably some self regenerating tissues somewhere), they don´t seem to enjoy much of free will.

7- I think Lena and Rhys relationship would start from your typical dynastic relationship - a prince and a princess hanging out togheter by political interests - and only develop into something deeper during their journey together. There isn´t anything I know of their backstory, though.

11- The third generation realized everything about Orakio, Laya, and Dark Force (with the help of the guys in Laya's world, Sage Island, Sky Heaven and New Mota), and that he was already causing havoc, probably since their grandparents' time (the laser attack on a moon or on Neopalm was the material evidence that things were going off control. Later we see how he was already capable of manipulating minds in the floating city he choosed to hide into). The only way to defeat him was to gather the sacred weapons, but, more importantly, to REALEASE Dark Force, so he could be fought and physically defeated in this dimension. Orakio's sword (which is a saber, really!) was preventing DF to keep on the destruction of the sheep 1000 years back, but when DF's power rose back close to its peak, there was no physical seal that would keep him to spread destruction again.

I wish there was a straight sequel to PSIII to answer all/some of these questions... PSIII/2. ;)
PSIII sure leaves many stones unturned. Mainly because the game was a bit rushed. :| The fan game I really would like to see is a sequel to PSIII that follows the plot of rest of the PS series as much as possible, but takes "tips" from compedium to turn the stones that PSIII left unturned.
I am NaN!

Thank you all for the help so far, that's a good start of what I'm looking for I'm looking for peoples theories about what may or may not have transpired because obviously most of it's in mystery. We don't know how laya was consumed by Dark Force, or why the leaders sealed their generals or when they did so or just about anything due to the lack of story.

So what I'm trying to do is get reasonable ideas and use those ideas to form a sort of story in itself basing it off the loose format of the game to create a richer story and give the game the credit that it should've gotten.

I am not able to theorize about those events but I would like to offer my services with a ps3 fan game of some kind.
I've already drawn some sprites of the first ps3 generation that appear in the game. Get back to me about this.

I'm not gonna add anything to this, seeing as people here and on gamefaqs who answered your questions already. =P Unless there was something specific that you were unsure about...

But, it is nice to see someone who wants to stay close to how PSIII's story was in their remake. If you actually do bother with remaking it, then great. However, most remake projects (mine included) never see the light of day, or any release for that matter. :)

Can't blame you, making games or anything using programs from choice is hard and time consuming. Sometimes life gets it the way, with me, lots. Your correct and anyone who tries to make something like that and never finishes, never failed, just never got round to it. But my only experience is gamemaker 7 without codeing, so you guys have it WAY harder :P
